Rating: Summary: A true tear jerker Review: Unfortunately, this book was too short. I cried several times in the process of reading this lovely short novel. The way James Patterson structures the book and the detail that is elaborated on was truely wonderful. A real joy to read and worth every penny of the purchase price. Thank you James Patterson for retoring my faith in true love. I look forward to reading Beach House
Rating: Summary: A BOOK WITH LITTLE REDEEMING SOCIAL VALUE Review: I bought this book because I had a gift certificate, wanted some light reading and noted that it had been on the New York Times best sellor list for an extended period of time. Well, so much for that list as a criteria for good reading.I suspect that if you were on an airplane or stuck someplace with some time on your hands SUZANNE'S DIARY would be worse while. Barring that don't bother. The reading level must be somewhere around the 5th grade. The story line is weak and although there is a moderate suprise at the end, I kept waiting for something to happen. At the end of the book I felt like I had been subjected to an overdose of sugar. In addition, I don't think that relationships are like the two in the book. Matt, who is made out to be such a catch, but doesn't seem to have much of a job, never has a harsh word or any kind of disagreement with his two loves. Now, I find that a little hard to believe. No one's relationships are that perfect. Maybe a lot of people liked this book because they want to dream that such relationships exist. People always want to believe that there will be a happy ending. I guess there are happy endings in the movies and in books like this but in life, things are hardly this perfect. There's too much good stuff out there to read than bother with such romantic driffle.
Rating: Summary: Patterson Presents a Tear-Jerker Review: "Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas", although not a thriller like many of James Patterson's other books, it is a strong and emotional piece that teaches lessons of the heart, and captures the attention of the audience with a different type of page turning suspense. This novel touches home to any reader who has ever felt loss, love, or complete and utter happiness. The honesty and compassion Patterson writes this story with strains from events in his own life, and presents events that most any reader can relate to. Patterson creates an emotional connection between characters. The reader forms a bond and attachment to all of the characters we meet throughout the story line. We are first introduced to Katie, one of the main characters who had just been abandoned by her true love Matthew, after recently discovering that she is carrying his baby. Katie is left bewildered and confused, not having a good explanation as to why he has left until she returns home one day, and finds a box containing a diary on her front step. The dairy contains the information of Matthew's life that he never shared with her, and kept concealed for reasons she never knew. This information explains why he left. The dairy reveals all that Katie needed to know, and some that she didn't necessarily want to hear. As the novel progresses, it alternates between Katie, and the dairy, creating a page turning sensation to find out what happens next in each section. With the conclusion of the diary, we understand everything, but we are just as motivated to keep reading to see how the novel will conclude. As a devoted reader of James Patterson, I have read all of his other books which includes the Alex Cross thriller series, as well as the "women's murder club" books. I was not sure at first about the change of pace, turning from suspense to emotion; I was afraid Patterson wouldn't have the same edge. I was definitely wrong though, and my opinion of Patterson as a writer has only improved. Althought this wasn't the first novel of his that has made me cry, it has been the only one that has really hit me on such an intense level. The emotional honesty he possesses is powerful, and would appeal to any reader, male or female. This novel teaches us some lessons in life that are important to learn; yet few of us know.
Rating: Summary: Didn't like it, couldn't finish it Review: Calling it a "fast read" doesn't begin to describe it. The book almost isn't there: short sentences, short paragraphs, short chapters, big type. This isn't a novel; it's a chapter book, only it has sex in it and it's shelved alongside the books for grownups. The story was hardly there either. It was more like a set of cues for a guided fantasy. If other readers are finding it moving and meaningful, I'm happy for them. Personally, I found I wasn't enjoying what was happening, and I didn't care what was going to happen, and anyway I was tired of doing all the work; so I put it aside and never went back.
Rating: Summary: Ho Hum Review: This story was a totally predictable tear-jerker written with very little subtlety and even less character development. I was really looking forward to reading this book and felt truly let down after going through page after page of a very average storyline draped in a mother's sentamental gushings over her new-born child. Most of the characters were never really defined through anyone else's eyes save those of the diary's author, and the character of the diary's recipient was not developed at all. I really felt like this story was a barely disguished melding of Segal's "Love Story" and Sparks' "Message in a Bottle."
Rating: Summary: Very Predictable Love Story Review: Although I read this book in one day, I was disappointed in the story. The ending was very predictable and the story was very sappy. If you like love stories, you will probably enjoy this, however, I was waiting for a good twist at the end that never came.
Rating: Summary: Read It in One Sitting Review: If you read only one book in your lifetime this one is it! It is a wonderful story of love, loss and the struggle to love again. It left me with tears streaming down my face for the characters and for those of us who haven't experienced that kind of love. I've always read James Patterson but this was an unexpected and wonderful read!
Rating: Summary: Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas Review: After searching on Amazon yesterday for something to read I came across this title and bought it today. I haven't read a book in a while and I managed to finishing this in half a day as I couldn't put it down. A very comforting and easy book to read with plenty of high and low moments.
Rating: Summary: Contrived Pathos Review: I gave it one star because it was a quick read, thank goodness. I would hate to think I invested any more time reading something so disappointing. Not 10 pages into the book and I already knew where this was headed. It's not believeable that a mother would write to her son in this fashion without the obvious being so obvious. It's hackneyed, haggared, and horrible. I want my money back!
Rating: Summary: Tripe guaranteed to lower one's I.Q. by a point or two Review: A member of my book club selected this book. Reading it was actually painful. The fine folks at Reader's Digest, Touched by an Angel and Chicken Soup for the Soul have nothing on Mr. Patterson. Thank goodness for the many blank pages that have been inserted to make this bit of fluff appear a little more substantial, and thank goodness for the 16-point font. Two hours wasted on this garbage were two hours too many.
