Rating: Summary: Read Ron, skim Nancy Review: Although not a political admirer of Ronald Reagan, I was always impressed by his ability to communicate with the American people. The letters in this book show that Reagan was as able to be emotional and even insightful with a single person--his wife--as he was with audiences of thousands. The letters are touching, and often profoundly moving.Nancy's commentary has its ups and downs. While she can be powerful, especially when talking about Alzheimer's, at other times she can be a bit perfunctory. Skim her sections, and read a few with attention.
Rating: Summary: What love! What devotion! Truly sweet and sincere ... Review: Sweet and sincere best describe this lovely collection of love letters from Ronald Reagan to Nancy Reagan. The media seemed to show that Nancy Reagan was a control freak and overbearing during The White House years, this book tells another story. The story is of a man and a woman deeply in love and totally committed to one another. What impressed me most was the sweetness and the vulnerability of this once very powerful man. Many of the letters have been scanned from the original copies so you get a real taste of the time and the personality of Ronald Reagan. The letterhead is often from various places and penned in his own handwriting. These letters show his most private and personal feelings of loving his wife and just how much she meant to him. You also get some insight into his sense of humor and in his ability to love and express love. I was charmed by the feeling that he never took his position(s) in government life so seriously that he lost his true core and his true heart. At first I was a bit shocked that Nancy Reagan would share something so personal because that was not the impression I once had of her. I also wondered what was in it for her? Fame, she has, fortune? But I later learned the proceeds from this book will benefit the Alzeimers Foundation. Whatever her motivation this is a wonderful surprise of a book and a great way for her to share some really neat things about one of our ex-presidents.
Rating: Summary: He's so romantic! Review: I picked up this book not expecting to enjoy it, and as I flipped through, I realized that Ronald Reagan is the most poetic and romantic writer! If I could go back, I would vote for him. I think I am in love with him.
Rating: Summary: What a love story Review: I found this book to be so touching, does anyone feel that way any more. It made me feel like the Reagans, excluded their kids, though. That makes me sad. It is definately worth a read.
Rating: Summary: Real love that lasts a lifetime.... Review: People may not like the Reagan's and that is their loss. The fact is President and Mrs Reagan have the marriage and deep legit soul mate connection that yuppies wax poetic about but know little about in reality. This book is proof positive that true love can be a reality and that two people can connect in such a way that they leave others in awe and I might say a tad bit of envy. But the books also shows that this marriage and lifelong LOVE affair has taken serious effort on a day to day basis. This book puts to words the pictures so many of us remember from his day's as our state's Governor (California) and later as the President of the United States. where they would both look with great fondness at each other, or he would be speaking and she would be beaming with love at him. It also helps put to rest what some of their jealous critics, who said he was pushed into doing things. Or that he was dense and she led him. The fact is, as the book so well shows, they were and are true soul mates who like any real soul mates each have strength as well as the ability to finish each others sentences. And how nice to have an example of what love letters can be and should be, especially after one is married. The Reagans are a great example for those younger, who need to see how to keep a marriage alive, healthy and vibrant. And even men will appreciate the book.... My husband who is also named Ron got me the book, for our 34th wedding anniversary which is September 16th. A better gift I could not have gotten. Our prayers are with President and Mrs Reagan. God Bless.
Rating: Summary: A truly classic couple! Review: Very touching and emotional. I voted for Reagan twice, and if I'd know that he was such a sensitive man, I would have voted much more than that. I enjoyed the letters from his Hollywood days best, because they showed a young man with bright optimism, and because I'm a sucker for anything from Hollywood's Golden Age (and finally because 'Knute Rockne, All American' is one of my favourite films; "Win one for the Gipper!"). This period also dealt with his experiences as head of the actor's union, a great precursor to his headier political endeavors, and the beginning of his romance with Nancy. The most heart-wrenching parts, though, are Nancy's commentary. She has an amazing ability to get past her fears about Ronnie's current illness, and talk openly about what she was feeling the first time she read these letters (that alone makes this a truly courageous book). In doing so, she creates a powerful central theme: memory and its ability to create and destroy the past.
Rating: Summary: You go girl! Review: I read a review of this book in the Chicago Sun Times that brought me to tears and then to the Amazon site to buy this book. I have always been impressed with the Reagan family and the class that Nancy brought to the White House--and my grandmother loved them too. Anyway, I look forward to reading this book. What impressed me most is that Nancy is donating the proceeds from her royalties to the Alzeimers Foundation. This is a horrible disease that will plague many of us in the future. Congratulations to Random House and to Nancy Reagan--you have my support. Here's to # 1 on the NY Times bestseller list.
Rating: Summary: I'm not a Reaganite, but these letters are wonderful Review: I am NOT a fan of the Reagan era...at all. It was a time of high taxes; high inflation and more. But I must say I always thought there was something special about Ron and Nancy's relationship, and these love letters confirm it. These letters are absolutely lovely and poetic. I mostly bypassed Nancy's "text/commentary;" I just read the letters. They are beautiful.
Rating: Summary: How many women are really loved? Review: I could not put the book down. By reading this book you really get the feeling for how a woman should be loved by her husband. And to know now that Ronnie can not remember some of it is sad. Nancy was truly a woman that was loved and Ronnie showed that in his doodles, love letters, and short notes. The book broght tears to my eyes in some of the letters he wrote. After reading this you will see what true love is really supposed to be.
Rating: Summary: Sweet, warm, and revealing Review: This book will go down in history as the definitive tale of a stately relationship that defined love for the 1980s. Before the Reagan years, America lacked a Monarchy; nothing like the love or power of Ron and Nancy had been seen since the Kennedys' Camelot. This is a wonderful book. Particularly revealing are the two chapters (9 and 15) about, respectively, Ronnie's active involvement in the Iran-Contra affair, and the couple's entirely democratic decision for Ronnie to feign Alzheimer's disease to keep him out of jail for his crimes. This is a couple that clearly discusses every decision, from what to buy Ron Jr. that troubled Christmas where the scandalous ballet pictures were revealed to the public (do NOT miss the bittersweet chapters on this issue), to conspiracy to funnel money to South American terrorists, to the hilarious "November Surprise". The relationship revealed in this book can only be described as sweet, tender, and warm. Those who say Nancy and Ron are too old and infirm are proven wrong time and time again in Nancy's ribald anecdotes about the Presidential bedroom (see especially the uproarious bit in chapter 7 about the rug in the Lincoln bedroom - Bill Clinton, eat your heart out!) and the couple's sexy, sexy weekend getaways to Camp David. This book will really make you think twice about the elderly. Please do yourself a favor and get to know these two and their amazing, equal relationship.
