Rating: Summary: Joey tells it like it is Review: I was so pleased to find this book in our public library here in England, where ADHD isn't recognised nearly as widely as in the USA (and adult ADD hardly at all). I'll be recommending it to the library at my local ADHD Support Center. It really does get inside the ADHD mind and make you care a lot for this kid, maddening though he is. Also it does an excellent job of showing that the way ADHD runs in families often leads to a chaotic home life for these children, however well-intentioned their carers may be. The mother's struggles are handled well and without sentimentality - it's all there in the details like "I lay down on the porch for an hour so the other kids wouldn't see me".
Rating: Summary: An 11 year old Review: This was a great and informative story of a kid with ADD who tells what it's like being "wired". He finds that he is controlled by his disability. He knows the rules, but he just can't remember them. When he becomes harmful to others, he is sent to a Special Ed school downtown for real help. I liked the teacher, Special Ed, who helps him.... I thought this story funny, sometimes sad, and an all around great story. Gantos, the author, gives you a good idea as to how it feels to be out of control.
Rating: Summary: WIRED Review: WIRED! This is what this book is about. A boy named Joey Pigza who is wired. He has a problem sitting still, following directions, and listening. Or this is called ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). Joey is good during the morning, but in the afternoon he's WIRED! Joey tries to do what his mom and teachers tell him. He has to go to a special-ed center because he is so wired. Will he get out? The answer is: "Can I get back to you on that?"
Rating: Summary: A crazy kid with a sharp mind! Review: This is a great book for people of all ages. It tells how people with behavioral disorders think just like anyone else. The only difference is that people with behavioral disorders can't always control their body motions. The author explains this idea through and eleven-year-old boy named Joey Pigza. Joey sill has behavioral problems even though he is on a medication. He needs a change in his way of thinking. This is almost impossible because he has lived with his grandmother ever since his mother went out looking for his "run-away" father. His Grandmother doesn't want to believe that Joey needs help at school because she has the same problem herself. This all changes when Joey's mother comes home! I think this was a great book because the author makes sure to give Joey's insite on what is happening in his life. For example, the author wrote that Joey's insides were squirming with anxiety. Also, the author made it a point to use similies and metaphors to describe Joey's feelings (my insides were twirling like a washing machine). You should read this book.
Rating: Summary: Fun Review: Wow this book is great. It really shows the trouble adhd could cause. Especially on Joey. this book is about a young boy with adhd the worst condition. I really would recommend it to the young because this book is really funny and entertaing.
Rating: Summary: 3/5 Stars (OK book) Review: This book about a hyperactive kid is an OK book. It teaches how even if the person seems incurably bad, they still sometimes can be really good. This book also teaches about acceptance and how other people can accept such a different person. This book was not the best book I've ever read. I rate it 3/5 stars because I sort of liked the book, but it wasn't the best book I've read. Some parts of it are somewhat boring, but a lot of people will enjoy this book.
Rating: Summary: Crawl into the mind and body of an ADHD kid! Review: As an elementary school librarian, who was diagnosed as an adult with ADHD, and who lives in a household with other ADHD people, I highly recommend this book! "Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key," is a fast-paced novel written at about the 5th grade level. Since we acquired two copies in our library about a month ago, it has been constantly checked out! I've had a student and his mom come into the library specifically to thank me for bringing this book to their attention and for discussing it with the his sixth grade class. If you want to crawl into the mind and body of a youngster with attention problems, spend some time with "Joey Pigza." What this kid does with his body, I've done in my mind my entire life, and I'm thankful to a number of medical professionals for helping me discover that I really was "wired" differently. (The book that really got me to seek help was "Driven to Distraction," by Edward M. Hallowell, which I also highly recommend.) The reviewer who attributes Joey's problems to his physical environment, overstates the situation. Yes, diet, chemicals and emotional problems can contribute to attention problems, but as a person who has eaten healthy foods for many years, and who has very few chemicals in the home, I can attest that ADD/ADHD people are usually born this way. I found relief through meds. Last year, I secretly took myself off the meds, and people around me noticed the difference within weeks. So, now I know it really does make a difference. Some people are misdiagnosed or over-medicated, which is why it's important to see a doctor who knows this disorder inside and out, like Joey finally did at the end of the book. This book should be read by any students, teachers or parents who either have attention problems, or who know someone who does. It would make an excellent read-aloud and discussion starter in an upper elementary classroom.
Rating: Summary: Joey Pigza swallowed the key Review: This is about a child with ADHD, but it portrays such an extreme view of this condition, that it made by own ADHD 9-year old feel embarrassed and humiliated, lest people believe all kids who take pills for this condition are so "messed up." Joey was abandoned by his parents and raised by an abusive grandmother. His Mom returns and need her own "meds",a bottle of Amaretto. Even the resource room teacher is emotionally abusive in this novel. I found this book depressing, hopeless, and very unhelpful in making people empathetic to this often lonely condition. I'm sure this was not the intent of the author, but I urge parents and teachers to read this before giving it to kids, and to preface any reading with the fact that this is NOT representative of most children with ADHD.
Rating: Summary: Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key Review: Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key was a wonderful book, which is a compliment considering that I get bored with many books quickly. I loved this book because it showed what his life was like having ADD, and practically raising himself because of his dad leaving, and his mom having a full-time job. It was also interesting on the kinds of things that he did, and why? I recommend that you buy and read this book.
Rating: Summary: Joey Pigza swallowed the key Review: A great child’s book rated a four star review: out of five stars. This book is a very interesting book you never know how it’s going to end. It’s about a boy named Joey. Joey has A.D.D, and his med’s don’t work. Joey goes through hard times until he gets transferred from a real school to a special education school and gets help and a different kind of medicine. To find out the end of the book...
