Rating: Summary: Great Read-Aloud Book Review: Everything on a Waffle is an enjoyable book. I discovered this book on the library shelf by accident. The title caught my attention first. As a fifth/sixth grade teacher, I am always looking for read-aloud books that my students and I will both find enjoyable. My students loved this book, and so did I! Students can relate to Primrose's awkwardness at this age. And while some of the characters are a bit exaggerated in their descriptions, everyone can think of someone they know that has some of the quirky traits of Primrose's uncle, the school guidance counselor, Miss Perfidy, and other characters in the story. While the underlying topic is serious (grieving for lost loved ones), there are many extremely funny scenes in this book. In fact, on several occasions, while reading Everything on a Waffle aloud to my class, I laughed so hard that I couldn't continue! At first, I used this book with my class purely for enjoyment purposes. However, I found it to be a helpful lead-in to discussions about topics such as bullying and cooking. The recipes at the end of each chapter encourage students to try things in the kitchen. The conclusion of the book was predictable though. Even my students figured out the ending ahead of time.
Rating: Summary: Parents Gone and Trouble Comes..... Review: Everything on a Waffle is an interesting and engrossing realistic fiction book by Polly Horvath, the author of The Trolls. Primrose Squarp is the main character. She is a type of person that does not care what other people say; she will always believe what she believes. Coal Harbor, B.C. Canada is the setting of Everything on a Waffle. Don't be surprised about the cars in this book because it is modern times! Awful things are about to happen to Primrose, will she manage? One stormy day Mr. Squarp and Mrs. Squarp are lost at sea in the thundering storm. An old lady called Ms. Perfidy's house turns into Primrose's new home. Ms. Perfidy is a stubborn selfish old lady charging $5 per hour day and night. Primrose's uncle, Uncle Jack, was willing to let her live with him for free. Primrose meets many unfortunate things but stays tough. If you want examples of the unfortunate things here are some of them; she loses all her sweaters, sets fire to a guinea pig called Herman, and loses a toe... The solution if her parents are alive, is what you need to find out yourself. I am recommending this book to others because this book tells you what having no parents and being singled out feels like. It would be a good interesting book for realistic fiction fans. No matter what type of reader you are it would be exciting, guessing what is going to happen to Primrose next. At last I should tell you that if you like waffles, read Everything on a Waffle!
Rating: Summary: Funny and Emotional Review: Everything on a Waffle, a Newbery Honor winning book, captures your attention as the main character Primrose Squarp captures your heart. The setting takes place in British Columbia with the plot of the story moving along at a good pace keeping the attention of the reader. Mr. Squarp, Primrose's father is a fisherman and is out at sea when a typhoon occurs. Her mother, worried, decides to go out on the water to search for her husband. They both are missing! Primrose an eleven-year-old girl experiences hard times after both her parents are lost at sea. Throughout the story, she must live with several different people including an uncle. Primrose also becomes great friends with a restaurant owner who serves everything on a waffle. Through good characterization, the author Polly Horvath allows the reader to understand the characters. The book demonstrates through these characters how everyone needs friends. Here a young girl and her adult friend show kindness, trust, and compassion for each other. Primrose also begins a relationship with an older couple that becomes her foster parents, once again demonstrating warmth and love between these characters. Not only do these adults influence Primrose's life, but she impacts their lives as well. The readers will find themselves experiencing many emotions throughout this book. One will feel compassion for Primrose as she longs for her parents and her old life and then quickly burst out laughing at some of the comical situations in which Primrose finds herself. Situations such as almost baking the class pet and actually losing a couple of body parts! I enjoyed the character because she is likeable, vulnerable, comical, and has a good heart. I think most children around grades 4, 5, and 6 will enjoy this book because of both the trials and comedy the characters experience. This book would be a good book to read aloud or together. It would be an asset when teaching children about friendship, grieving, determination and believing in something.
Rating: Summary: What is in a Waffle? Review: Everything on a Waffle, by Polly Horvath is a touching tale of a young girl named Primrose. The story is set in a small town called Coal Horbor. In the beginning of the story Primrose loses her parents in a storm and becomes a ward of the town. She starts off by living with Miss Perfidy, and old spincder, that does not have the want or the patience to be the guardian of Primrose. The town has a meeting to dicuss who was going to take care of this child and it is decided that her Uncle Jack was to be her legal guardian. Primrose, however, never gives up the idea that her parents are not dead and goes to the docks everyday to wait for them. Everyone, except Uncle Jack and Miss Bowzer, believes that her parents are dead and that she should get on with her mourning process. Through out the whole book she contests the idea that her parents are dead by stating, "Didn't you ever believe anything just because you knew it was true?" Primrose decided to hold that motto close to her heart, and that gave her the strenghth to endure the crulties that the town's people provided. The thorn in Promrose's side is Miss Honeycut. Miss Honeycut is the school's counsilor. From the beginning of the story she has done nothing to help Primrose. For example on the first day back in class she sent Primrose to the library while she explained to the children about what happended to Primrose and that they should all pitty her. Miss Honeycut tries to present herself as the one looking out for this helpless young girl, but reviels herself to be selfish and underhanded. Miss Honeycut is only giving the impression that she even likes Primrose to get to Uncle Jack. She is the type of person that would so something for someone if it would in some way benifit her. Miss Honeycut is the typicle example of the agrivator of a story. She tries to manipulate situations to cause caoss and trouble for everyone involved in the situation. The two people in this story that are Primrose's saving grace are Uncle Jack and Miss Bowzer. They are the only two people that care enough about Primrose to let her get away with saying that her parents were not dead. Even though they know the odds are stacked against the chance that her parents are alive, they are not eager to disagree with her like everyone else in the town. One interesting element in this story is the use of writing down recipes. The only thing that Primrose posessess of her mother's is this little notebook that contained a recipe for carrots in an apricot glaze and an old shopping list. This notebook serves as a security blanket for Primrose because it is in her mother's handwriting. Through the rest of the book after every chapter there is a recipe. At first I did not understand the intension behind the recipies, but as the book went on I developed a theory. The idea of food to most people is a comforting thing, and something tragic happens one must focus on something else to ease the pain. When Primrose found the notebook it was almost if her mother gave her something else to focus her attension, so the hurt of losing her parents was not too severe. This story depicts a girl that has strengh that only a child can posess. She has gone through the loss of her parents, a pinky toe, and the tip of her ring finger, and with all that she mannages to remain positive. Most adults who experience like happenings would give into their own self pitty, but the endurance of her spirit keeps her strong. She never denounces anyone publicly and still tries to respect the one's who continusly contridict her on her idea that her parents are still alive. Everything on a Waffle is a funny, heart warming, and hopefull tale of one girl lost in a sea of people who want nothing to do with her. Horvath has created a canvass to show children what it really means to have hope and strenght in your heart. This a book that parents and children need to read together, because not only will it teach the children; it will inspire adults to recapture some of their old childhood hope.

Rating: Summary: ~*~Tay's Book Review~*~ Review: Everything On A Waffle Do you like books where the main character is always in a pickle? Then Everything On A Waffle by Polly Horvath is the book for you! Primrose is 11 years old and lives in Coal Harbor, British Colombia. Her parents are "lost at sea" (lost out on a boat) and in the pit of her heart she feels like they are still alive, even though she gets put down and made fun of often. Since the big problem, Primrose was living with her neighbor, Miss. Perfidy. Her neighbor Miss. Perfidy is growing old and can no longer keep Primrose in good care. Her Uncle Jack comes and adopts her and buys a house in her neighborhood. Some very drastic things happen to her while living with Uncle Jack. I would make a list and tell you but that would give away the book! One of my favorite parts is when Uncle Jack gets Primrose a black and white dog, she named her new puppy mallamar because he looked like a chocolate and marshmallow cookie! Do you like to cook? Then that is another reason this book would be good for you! Why you ask? There is a food mentioned in every chapter, at the end the chapter the recipe is just waiting to be used! To make things funnier, the real recipes are written by Primrose! I recommend this book to people from the ages of 9-99. I learned that you should always believe and never give up on what you truly believe. -Taylor
