Rating: Summary: An unpleasant book - one for facists Review: A peculiarly American world view where the 'heroes' murder democratically elected US politicians but are also fighting the 'baddies' - who, you guessed it, are murdering democratically elected US politicians. However, within the differing shadings of fascism shown by all the protagonists, we are supposed to sympathise with the heroes! One to throw away
Rating: Summary: 9 out of 10 for this gritty, captivating thriller Review: I inadvertently got to Flynn's novels out of order, reading his first book (this one) last. It doesn't matter. As a stand-alone entry in the pantheon of political and espionage thrillers, it marks Flynn's auspicious debut. Flynn's abilities are three-fold: (a) a sense of realism around political and covert ops; (b) a healthy cynicism regarding our political system; and (c) a no-words-wasted approach to giving us glimpses into characters' true personalities. One of my criticisms of Clancy's books is his characters: drawn with cardboard-thin personalities. Flynn's characters are sketched more fully, with motivations, human weaknesses and subtle nuances visible and illustrated. If you enjoy espionage and political thrillers - you'll get a kick out of Flynn.
Rating: Summary: bought it and have all of his others...... Review: If you like Tom Clancy but have a difficult time with his extreme attention to detail... this author is for you. His subsequent books Transfer of Power and Third Option are just a continuation... all the drama we hear rumors about with the CIA, ex-commandoes, Green Berets, gov't cover ups... in these books.... great fast reads....
Rating: Summary: Nicely paced and very hard to guess... Review: ...what should happen next in the story. Very plausible scenario and some enjoyable characters. Makes you really want the "bad guy" to get his in the end. Story left me very satisified. I would have preferred to give this a 4.5 stars because it isn't my favorite genre of reading, but I guess I need to compare it with other books I've read in this genre. Worth the time.
Rating: Summary: What a concept Review: Vince Flynn has re-energized the political thriller genre with this gem by making it so much fun to read. The stroy begins with former commandos killing three politicians that are corrupt, which is quite an interesting concept. The SEALS feel they have ruined America and deserved to be taken out -- literally. It all provides the ironic backdrop for the climax as other shady characters try to take advantage of these deaths. Flynn writes with as much knowledge and as much exlosiveness as David Baldacci and Brad Meltzer, but I did feel he gave away the ending well in advance. His characters, particularly the political figures, were so real and portrayed so accurately that parts were almost laugh out loud funny. Gee, I wonder who the drunk, gray-haired senator that gets whacked might have been? With other bestsellers already on the shelves it is clear Flynn will be a force in this area for a long time. If his other books are as good as this one, his future is bright.
Rating: Summary: Better than Kirkus Reviews Review: I have read all four of Flynn's books and came back to comment that the Kirkus Reviews 1998 copyrighted review is "underwhelming", whether or not one shares Flynn's political views or not. Flynn is highly entertaining, mostly accurate, and certainly welcome to create "one-dimensional types" so long as the narrative moves along. After all, most of our Washington DC government-as-ogre "liberal" politicians are mostly one-dimensional. So, guys and gals, cut the budget and cut out the money-as-power, or else. By all means read Flynn every chance you get, and, Flynn, keep writing. You will be wealthier than Woodward and Bernstein someday.
Rating: Summary: A Little to Far Out for Me Review: I made a huge mistake when I bought this book...I judged it by its cover. I was interested because I thought it would be about an assassination plot where the bad guys would be exposed for the murderers they are. However, this book almost goes so far as to make heros out of the assassins. With out giving anything away, the plot was a little to radical for me especially in light of recent events. Vince Flynn is no Clancy, or Grisham for that matter...not even close.
Rating: Summary: Lots Of Action But Very Implausible! Review: Term Limits is a good first effort from Vince Flynn and I plan to read his other novels. The book is filled with action, which makes you turn the pages at an increasingly fast rate. For me, however, the plot, while interesting, went somewhat over the limit to which I am willing to extend belief. Further, none of the characters -- both the supposedly "good guys" and the "bad guys" -- are ones you care much about and it's often hard to distinguish between the good and the bad. As a result, I thought Term Limits is worthy of reading but only deserving of a "good/3 star" rating.
Rating: Summary: Right On!! Review: I read the three books that Flynn wrote after this one before I came back to it to see if it was as poor as the Kirkus reviewer says. I gave it 4 stars only because of the comparison to the three sequels. They are without peer as you will see if you read my reviews of them. This is a damn fine read. It will make those that think Madeline Albright was a great Secretary of State uncomfortable; it will make those that believe Bill Clinton had a clue about what he was doing for eight years squirm; it is a book that as Howard Cosell used to say, "tells it like it is". It is not for everyone, but it spoke to me and if you are wearing a flag pin or flying one from your car these days, I guarantee it will speak to you. That's all we want a book to do.
Rating: Summary: Full of suspense. Very exciting. Review: I enjoyed this book. The suspense began the minute the book opened and continued to the end. Although I don't see this book as being realistic, I thought that only added to the enjoyment of reading this story. (sometimes too realistic is not fun!) The characters are fully developed and the reader is able to see their thoughts as they develop, which only adds to the plot. I appreciated the 'innocent' type of outlook Michael has about his job. It only added to the excitement as he struggles to learn what exactly is happening. enjoy.
