Rating: Summary: Off the Hook!! Review: I got to put in a good word for Mr Tyree. Now, not all his books were hits, but hey, we all learning here. But either this brother was checking out the music industry, knows someone in the music industry, or just has one hell or an imagination and or research capabilities to write this book. Not only that, Mr Tyree is one hell of a marketing promoter(i.e. tshirts, key chains). Anyhow, the story of this mama's boy who broke away and become a singing sensation will keep you hooked to the book to the very end. Now, don't let the beginning scare you off, stick around and check out the story of Loverboy and Darin. Now, I didn't care for the way some of the women in here were treated(although they allowed themselves to be treated in that manner, and did I say women? Really little girls. Where were their mamas?), I know that this is the way the music, sports, and entertainment scene goes. I truly hope some of the young ladies check this book out in that aspect especially. I give the book more than five stars, and predict a great future for Mr Tyree. winning an NAACP Image Award has definitely not hurt him. Check this book out folks, you won't be bored. And I'm not finished either. Peace.
Rating: Summary: Ineresting..........BUT Review: I thought that Omar Tyree's new book, "Just Say No" would be intriging..I have read 2 previous efforts, "Single Mom" and "Fly GIrl" and was impressed. Reading the first couple of chapter tells the story of two friends, Darin ("D") Harmin and Jhon Williams, who rise as a manager/singer twosome. Also a third friends, Tony Williams joins Jhon as his drummer. Everything seems to go right until Jhon starts using drugs and egts WAY out of hand, with everything from groupies, sex, drugs, money and EVEN personal unsolved conflicts between his mother, and a ROLE in the death of his bodyguard/best friend Big Joe. I felt the book was so boring from Darin's point of view.He literally would have walked the same path as John if he wouldnt have been strong. The book would has been a little interesting if told from the point of view from Tony Williams.
Rating: Summary: Experiencing Review: Just Say No, was a very interesting read. I knew the content I was dealing, because of the title. The read gave an insight on what goes on in the music industry. Omar done a lot of research to get the facts of the music industry, by him being a writer not a musician. It have facts on what entertainers have to go through along with their success. It also have sight on how real friendship should be along the the ups and downs. This read really touched me especially at the end and it was not predictable, I even shedded a few tears. I would suggest all readers to read this book. Keep up the good work Omar. Thanks!
Rating: Summary: Just Say No Review: My wife purchased this book because I am from NC and an A&T graduate. The book started out good and I enjoyed Damon and John's rise to fame. The references to A&T's campus and campus life were fairly accurate and brought back pleasant memories. Unfortunately, that's when the book became predictable. Except for the insight into the music industry which was great, the book became mired in drug and sex exploits. Then you could predict how it would end. You can not build a quality novel around the shallowness of the characters in this book. Normally I can not put down a good book, but I had to push myself to complete this one. I wish the author would have developed the characters better. There were too many unanswered questions about the main characters and the women have no depth. They sound like the "Average Girl in the Video". Maybe this it what it is like in the today's lust and ego driven music industry. Perhaps Mr. Tyree was just trying to keep it real. The music beats incorporated into the text disturbed the flow of the novel and made it much longer. This just doesn't work and does not add anything to the story. Next time add more plot better characters and less fluff. If you want to get a inside look at the music industry, read this otherwise wait for the paperback version or check it out from the library. Not Omar's best.
Rating: Summary: Just Say No to Reading This! Review: What I thought started out to be a pretty good read, turned into pure torture after the first chapter as I struggled for more than three weeks to finish this book. For a person that usually finishes a book in a 24 hr. time frame, that's an eternity!! I suggest that next time you leave out writing lyrics and beats. Especially over and over. Most readers are more interested in the story. Thank God I read a copy from the library.
Rating: Summary: Captivating Review: Well, well, well, Omar definately got himself off of my author black list. After "For the Love of Money" I was extremely leary about reading anything by Omar but "Just Say No" was a big surprise to me. It was a captivating read from start to finish. Although the ending may not have been a fairytale ending, I would not have had it any other way. The "Lover Boy" was surely heading for self destruction. This novel is a must read. I recommend it highly. Omar is back in my good graces. Keep up the good work.
Rating: Summary: A look into the entertainment world Review: I enjoyed the book. It was a welcome change from the dozens of typical boy meet girl, cheats on girl, drama for your mama African american books. Omar wrote the book well, giving us plenty of detail to imagine as we read. Drama!, sex, money, power, respect. With this book, Omar also teaches a lesson, a lesson about getting caught up and learning when to say no. At first glance, I thought the title was corny as all get out, but it worked for the book, and you know what they say, can't read a book by it's cover. Check it out. Good book, with a fresh perspective. ....
Rating: Summary: Awful... Review: That's it Omar! I can't do it anymore! I bought Fly Girl way back and liked it. But it has been downhill ever since. Your ego has grown so large that you can't stop referring to yourself in your books (what other author does that???) and the quality has become horrendous. For The Love of Money was just plain bad, and while Just Say No isn't as bad as that, it was just as predictable as the rest of your novels. I've got to ask: What the hell was the NAACP thinking when they gave you their award? Readers, if you want to read quality literature, check out Michael Datcher's Raising Fences. In fact, Omar, you should read it also, so that you can see how the craft of writing should be done.
Rating: Summary: Just Say Yes Review: I was very reluncted of getting this book at first. I was disappointed with his last couple of books. But Mr. Tyree redeemed himself with this last book. The story was a great read, I enjoyed the whole story-line and the characters. I hope Omar continue to write more books of this style.
Rating: Summary: JUST CAN' T PUT IT DOWN' Review: THIS IS THE STORY OF TWO BEST FRIENDS, ONE FROM A SINGLE, GOD-FEARING MOTHER, THE OTHER FROM A STABLE TWO FAMILY HOME. JOHN WILLIAMS, THE SHY RECLUSIVE SHELTERED CHILD OF A SINGLE PARENT HOME GETS BEFRIENDED BY DARIN HARMON THE STABLE AVERAGE AMERICAN BOY. AS THE YEARS PROGRESS, THEY EVENTUALLY BECOME BEST FRIENDS WHO SHARE EVERYTHING UNTIL ONE DAY WHILE THEY ATTEND THE SAME COLLEGE, JOHN ENTERS A TALENT SHOW. AFTER THIS, HE BECOMES AN INSTANT CELEBRITY AND STARTS TO ENJOY THE ADULATION OF THE CROWD AND THE EXTRA TRAPPINGS THAT COME WITH BEING A CELEBRITY.... THROUGH IT ALL, JOHN CONTINUES TO BELT OUT HIT AFTER HIT BASED ON HIS EXPERIENCES IN LIFE. CAN HIS BEST FRIEND DARIN SAVE HIM FROM HIMSELF AND THE 'LOVERBOY' PERSONA. YOU WILL DEFINITELY HAVE TO GET THE BOOK TO FIND OUT. THIS BOOK IS A DEFINITE RECOVERY FROM HIS LAST BOOK, 'FOR THE LOVE OF MONEY' WHICH TURNED OUT TO BE A COMPLETE LET DOWN FROM HIS PAST EFFORTS IN WRITING. I AM DEFINITELY GLAD MR TYREE RECOVERED AND REDEEMED HIMSELF WITH 'JUST SAY NO'
