Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: I thoroughly enjoyed this novel - I thought it was just stunning. I particularly liked the characterization of Elizabeth Middleton Bonner...there is nothing quite like a good, strong, fiesty female character (Curiousity is pretty cool as well)! Elizabeth reminded me a lot of Diana Gabaldon's character, Claire Fraser - so it was a real thrill to see Claire briefly mentioned in the tale! The detailed descriptions of life back then, especially the Indian way of life, are fascinating. I can't wait for the sequel, so I can find out if: Elizabeth's babies are born safely, if Kitty marries Richard and whether the Bonners leave Paradise for Scotland etc. I must say I was surprised to see Julian, Moses Southern and Billy Kirby killed off - who are the villians going to be in the sequel??
Rating: Summary: Interesting and exciting! I can't wait for the next episode! Review: This book should be mandatory for all people to read. From a historical point of view it demonstrates the extremes of sexism and racial discrimination of people who knew no different way of thinking. The strength of the characters is uplifting and the love scenes detailed and intimate in a respectful way. Much to my families distaste, I have found it difficult to put this book down. It is well written, well researched and very easy to read. I am going to see if I can find Sarah's first book "Homestead" so that I can absorb some more of these strong determined women! I hope we don't have to wait too long in Australia to receive the sequel. Leonie Sanders Australia
Rating: Summary: If you like "formulaic" romance, this one's for you! Review: I was excited to read this book but my anticipation soon turned to disappointment. Instead of the historical fiction I was expecting, this novel turned out to be a predictable, formulaic romance novel with few surprises. The characters were typical as were the conflicts. Don't waste your time or money on this one!
Rating: Summary: A magestic , moving tale that leaps to life from the page Review: For anyone who loves historical fiction or the writings of Diana Gabaldon, this is the book for you. It is a magestic love story that can't help but leap from the page and into your imagination. The response from patrons at my library has been overwhelmingly positive, and patrons are excited that Sara Donati has come onto the "scene". This is a true epic story that has much life left in it, and much to look forward to. I, for one, can't wait for the sequel. Sara Donati is a marvel with the written word.
Rating: Summary: AN AMAZING JOURNEY! Review: INTO THE WILDERNESS is an adventurous tale revolving a proud widowed father, Nathaniel Bonner, white from birth but Indian at heart, determined to keep the lands of his people and about his valiant wife, Elizabeth Middleton Bonner, prepared to fight at her husband's side against all odds. Family feuds, an old rival, lost gold, and a murderous tracker add excitement and suspense to this story, but it's the strength and love of its passionate couple that truly makes INTO THE WILDERNESS a wonderful read worthy of your time and imagination. I recommend it. You'll absolutely enjoy the journey. Trust me!
Rating: Summary: sequel? tribute? retelling? the mystery explored... Review: I will admit that I am fascinated and (usually) entertained by the reviews posted here by Amazon customers -- writing is a solitary undertaking with so little direct feedback, and sometimes when I'm procrastinating over a difficult scene I'll wander over to Amazon (as some wander to the water cooler) to see who's here and what they have had to say about this story of mine. What I want to do is clear up something that seems to cause many people confusion and some of them even unhappiness. Is this a sequel to Last of the Mohicans? Why do the same characters show up? Why are some of the names changed? What gives? To situate this story in relationship to other stories set in this time and place, you do have to begin with James Fenimore Cooper, he of the flowery dialogue (I defy thee, wretched Huron!) but interesting conflicts. This is not a sequel to Last of the Mohicans, but it is a very loose retelling of The Pioneers. I begin with some of his characters, and make them my own. Natty Bumppo, Nathaniel Po, Daniel Boone, to these I add my incarnation of Nathaniel Bonner. Just as my Elizabeth Middleton is modeled on Jane Austen's Elizabeth and Mary Bennet. Retellings are very common in fiction -- some claim there are only twenty plots that get used over and over again. Thus West Side Story might be seen as rewarmed Romeo and Juliet. So take this for what it's meant to be (a good solid adventure/love story with careful attention to historical detail, and characters who keep you intrigued) or take it for warmed over Cooper -- the choice is yours. Another point of some contention -- If you'd like to call it a romance, that's fine with me too -- there's a love story at the heart of it, after all. If you're looking for a traditional romance, you will find that it doesn't quite follow all the rules of the genre -- but you might like it anyway. You never know.
Rating: Summary: The most exciting book I've read in a long time... Review: I could not put this book down. I absolutely loved it. I find several things disquieting, though. Not only does Ms. Donati use Cooper's characters, there are too many uncomfortable similarities to his book, "The Pioneers". Ms. Donati is an excellent writer. My question is this... If you can write a book as exciting as "Into the Wilderness", why do you need to steal storylines and characters from another author's work? Even so, I can't wait for the sequel.
Rating: Summary: Excellent! An epic, a true classic. Review: Into the Wilderness is destined to be a classic. It is one of the best fiction based on history I have ever read. I want a second - a sequel- to continue the story of Elizabeth and Nathanael's family. Please Ms. Donati, consider continuing this beautiful story.
Rating: Summary: Loved it! Review: Last summer I finished reading Diana Gabaldon's popular series. Into the Wilderness was recommened to me from a DG message board on AOL. I picked it up out of curiosity. I quickly became engrossed in it, I didn't want to put it down. Elizabeth is such a 3-D character. She's a woman living in the 1700's who can stand up for herself. I can't stand weak heroines who depend entirely on men. Not to say anything against the men in the book. All the characters were believable and you care what happens to them. One of my favorites is Runs-from-Bears, he doesn't say much but he's still very intelligent. I could go on about this wonderful book for hours, but I can't. So if you are looking for a book that will take you away this is it - Enjoy!
Rating: Summary: I became part of the story;could not put the book down Review: As diana gabaldon wrote- one of those rare stories that lets you breathe the air of another time..... Excellent! i commend Sara Donati for a well written very informative book. I'm telling everyone to read it. I am looking forward to continuation of Elizabeth and Nathaniel...
