Rating: Summary: Goodnight, Alex Cross Review: Alex Cross stumbles into the nightmarish world of deceit, when he walks right past the killer once again, thinking the bad guy is a friend/colleague. This premise from Patterson is getting tired. He tried it in Kiss the Girls, and it made out ok. I was fooled and was happy about it. Got my money's worth. This time was too much, though.Patterson lost a reader in me.
Rating: Summary: The bloom is off the rose Review: As an avid fan of Mr. Patterson, I had looked forward to reading his latest offering and was thrilled when my book reserve notice from the library arrived. Much to my disappointment though, I soon realized that Patterson had throughly let his readers down with this one. The ending was no ending at all, unless you consider cliff hangers and an obvious sequel somewhere in the future an ending. I don't. To top it off, the relationships between Cross, his daughter, his old girl friend and his new love interest were trite at best and at their worst...phony. By the way, Patterson needs to bone up on his knowledge of eight year old girls. The language skills this little girl displays are way beyond those of any eight year old I've ever come across. And the questionable plot line of his daughter's brain tumor was handled abysmally. Cross writes it as if this sort of thing, especially in a child, is a day at the park. A couple of days in the hospital, a couple of tests and a quick operation...and in no time at all, she's back at home eating fried chicken and dumplings. Whew! Now, I have to be honest, there were good elements to the story as well which is why I gave it two stars instead of only one. He did manage to keep me quessing as to the idenity of the killer...always important, and it wasn't too long a read...thankfully. If you are one of those individuals who considers everything James Patterson writes a "must read", then nothing I've written will change your mind. However, if you don't belong to this particular group of readers, you may want to spend your reading time elsewhere.
Rating: Summary: some disappointment Review: Well, I knew he would write one that just didn't relect his true talent and I am afraid it is this one. HE just kinda brushed over alot of personal interactions with Alex's family and girlfriend. It was good enough to read, but lacked the excitement and intensity you expect from Patterson. I guess I will have to wait for the special ones to be written.
Rating: Summary: Two Thumbs Up Review: Although I am a younger reader, I have explored many authors who write about mystery and supense and have enjoyed mostly all of them. However, I read this book and nothing compared. This was so good...a lot of stories have coincidental events such as two world famous detectives meeting a dentist's office. The story proceeds from there, but you are almost always aware of the outcome. With this story, nothing that I suspected happened and the magnitude of the crimes were so horrifying that I dreamt about the mind of this killer. In this story, I was the detective, searching for "The Mastermind". It was so good I read it in 2 hours without putting it down. It made me feel like I was the police officer..whenever he thought they had him, it slapped them in the face. I really though this book was absolutely wonderful and I definitely recommend it to anybody who wants a thrilling read.
Rating: Summary: Thoroughly disappointing Review: This Alex Cross mystery is miserable. Truly. The detective is hit with disappointment after disappointment, the sociopathic killer is exceptionally depraved, and once this ponderous riddle is FINALLY resolved, the ending is unbelievably contrived and unfulfilling. Also, a note to Mr. Patterson: three paragraphs does not make a chapter. You don't get extra credit because of a high chapter count. I'd settle for a worthy follow-up to "Kiss the Girls." It's been several years, and I'm still waiting.
Rating: Summary: Disappointed Review: I have read every book James Paterson has written, and I anxiously await each new one. It seems Mr. Paterson is writing books to fulfill a contarctual obligation, rather than to generate thrillers like Kiss The Girls & Along Came A Spider. The plot is superfluous, empty, and very sophmoric. What happened to the Alex Cross of earlier books, where the challenges were real and intense. Please don't write junk and expect your readers to buy it. Loyalty goes just so far.
Rating: Summary: Another great Alex Cross novel Review: I look forward to James Patterson books. They are always a great way to "get away". I have read all of the Alex Cross novels and they never disappoint. You keep up to date on his life, as well as each new murder mystery. Keeps you guessing and on your toes up until the end. Hooray for James Patterson for giving us yet another good book.
Rating: Summary: Disappointing Review: This was a book I was looking forward to reading. I thought after Pop Goes The Weasel James Paterson would come to his senses and write a book that did not reach such an obscure story line. Boy, was I wrong. Bab enough Christine is in Bermuda for a year and has a baby, Roses Are Red goes beyond that. When I read the last sentence I thought I had missed something. I actually went back and scaned it again to see the missing clues. There were none. My conclusion is James Paterson could not find an ending to his rambling novel, ergo the last paragraph. I have purchased my last book authored by him. You (AOL) should be giving this book away, not offering a 40% discount. It is truly not worth it.
Rating: Summary: I am just thankful I did not pay for this trash!! Review: My mom is a rabid fan of Patterson, and every time she finishes one of his books, she passes it on to me. Well, I have now read 3 and each time I have been disappointed. I have a bad habit of reading the last page of a novel before I am halfway done with it. Well, as those who have read this "book" will know, that is where he gives away the identity of Cross' nemesis, "The Mastermind". Did it help? No, I almost didn't finish the book because of it. Not only that, but there were NO clues telegraphed to the reader that this could possibly be the person responsible for the crimes. Come on, Mr. Patterson, we deserve better than that. I will say one positive thing: your habit of switching between 1st person singular and 3rd person singular was less grating this time because your protagonist was male. Please lay off writing from the 1st person singular if your protagonist is female - it doesn't ring true!
Rating: Summary: Actually, it was pretty good... Review: ... but he's obviously trying to "make" readers buy the next book. I thought it was up to par with the rest of the Alex Cross books and am looking forward to finding out what happens next.
