Rating: Summary: Great! I recommend this book to every christian. Review: A must read for both christian and non-chritian. A book for all age groups. Mr.Peretti writes with a sense of spiritual realism, that even a layperson can understand and feel. I really believe, not one library is complete without a Frank E. Peretti section
Rating: Summary: Morality dilema? Problem resolution at it's finest !! Review: The best of the series from Mr. Perretti. An effective means of ministry. Far too often we speak "Christianese" to none beleivers, alienating them and reducing the value of our testimony. This murder/mystery format reaches out to everyone, while at the same time asking and answering questions that challenge the reader to delve into themselves and make some decisions. Decisions that will alter their lives for an eternity. This is evangelism at it's finest. Meet the people where they are. Capture their interest, and hit them with some truths that will shake their foundation. Mature beleivers will draw courage from, and get a greater understanding of some spiritual aspects defined in this book. Very well done
Rating: Summary: Good vs evil Review: I have to respectfully disagree with 2 of the other reviews of this book. They have missed an important point. This is not, nor ever claims to be, a book on theology. It is fiction. And excellent, must read, can't put down fiction. It is thought provoking and perhaps one of the best books I have ever read. Find it in the FICTION area of your bookstore, not the THEOLOGY section
Rating: Summary: I expected more Review: While the book maintained a steady pace, the theology introduced by Mr Peretti was somewhat faulted. I felt that the book seemed to point out that human freedom and choice were secondary, almost irrelavant, to the "spiritual battles"
Rating: Summary: Riveting; Spellbinding; Definitely worth reading!! Review: This book is excellent. Full of adventure and mystery. Satan has taken over a small town, like Smalltown, USA.
It is a struggle between the forces of good and evil. What makes the book so intriguing is its possibility of actually being true. The power of prayer is reconfirmed in
this wonderful novel.
Rating: Summary: Fast moving paper thin characters, worse than TV Review: Frank Peretti tries to emphasize the importance of prayer in the
christian experience by weaving a fast moving tale of satanic conspiracy.
A noble motive. A terrible novel. Characters are either good or bad. All good characters are saintlike. All
bad characters are demon possessed. You can find more plausible
characters on television. To make up for such thin characters the plot moves very quickly. So quickly that many people miss the
point that the novel departs bible based theology. Great book if you cannot
find it in yourself to criticize anything labeled "christian", an experience similar
to having a tooth filled for those more discerning. Read "Cry, the Beloved Country" instead.
Rating: Summary: The visual battle is not always the real battle. Review: This novel points, as many do, towards the Great Conspiracy. Except
this time it's not the government or the really rich guys. No this
time its the real deceiver Satan. This book is two stories, one of
which is about a small town scandal and a little church that may be
destroyed by it. The other is the war in the spirit world between
the angelic hosts of God and demonic forces of Satan. The inter-
relationship between these two stories makes the story powerful and
enables the reader to better visualize our link to that spiritual
realm we can only glimpse. Great Job by Peretti.
Rating: Summary: A Spiritual Wake-Up Call Review: What a rivetting, thought-provoking reminder that we war not against flesh and blood but against the spirits and the Prince of the air (Eph. 6:12). Once again, in keeping with the spirit of "This Present Darkness," Peretti has skillfully pictured what takes place around us every day, unseen and seemingly un-noticed. I found myself looking forward to the daily moments that I would be able to sit down and read "Piercing the Darkness" uninterrupted. With each delightful turn of the page, the words captured my undivided attention, while challenging my spirituality. I found myself wanting to pray for the persecuted Christians, wanting to reach out to them in Christian support; but then I had to remind myself that it was just a book! Never before this book have I seen such a beautiful, rapturous description of receiving Christ as one's Savior. Peretti has given his readers a rare, yet human, glimpse at what it just might be like when Jesus redeems another soul to Himself. What a challenge this book has given me to pray with more fervor, to boldly come before His throne, to rejoice in His love and the protection of His children. I hope and pray that Peretti continues to write such challenging material.
Rating: Summary: An engaging story, but disappointing sequel Review: As in "This Present Darkness," the first of this two-novel series, Peretti gives us glimpses into the spiritual warfare going on invisibly around us. His speculation on the nature of the demonic hierarchy is perhaps the most interesting part of this series, but he seems to not develop that much at all here, nor are the angelic guardians of Earth given much more to do than ride in at the last moment to save the day....again.There is, however, a twist to this novel that is actually an improvement on the first. The plot line concerning the humans in the first novel was an attempt by Satan's forces to overtake an entire college town, and was a bit predictable. I must admit I prefer the human plot line here, which centers on a mystery regarding a woman named Sally Roe. Overall, however, for whatever reason, this second installment did not draw me in as completely and has not proven as memorable as the original "This Present Darkness." Mark this one down as a good idea that was not as well realized as the original.
Rating: Summary: amazing Review: if you like "this present" you will love this book - read "this present" before this one - i was just as entranced with this read - the passage where Peretti describes Sally's coming to the Lord is just amazing - a wonderful find for any avid reader - especially Christians - he truly has a gift and wish more of his books were like this one
