Rating: Summary: Funny Review: I thought this book was very funny. Just what is needed for a good laugh this season. I hope he writes more!!
Rating: Summary: Skipping Christmas Review: It is a wonderful and actually very funny Christmas Story which you won't want to put it down once you reach chpt. 11/12. I had to pass it on to my relatives so they could enjoy this fun loving story. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Happy Holidays!
Rating: Summary: Entertaining Review: This was a very enjoyable book, and I liked it a lot. It is relatively short which is nice because you can get through it quickly and move onto another book. The story was very entertaining and can get you in the Christmas spirit. About three quarters of the way through the book, I thought I was not going to like the ending; however, the ending turned out to be wonderful and very heartwarming. The book can remind us all of the true meaning of Christmas.
Rating: Summary: An Important Lesson Review: I do agree with another reviewer that the literary sophisticaion does not measure up to Dickens, but this book is a quick, easy, yet enjoyable read. Although taking a cruise to run away from Christmas stress and expenses may seem appealing, the story makes one realize that selfishness does not bring joy to anyone, even a vain couple such as this Mr. Krank and his weak-willed wife. Christmas can become quite expensive each year, but the solution to the this problem is not to cut expenses in half and spend half that sum on oneself, as the writer shows in this beautiful story. The string of people whose appeals the selfish couple rudely and obstinately ignores extends over many pages. Nothing moves them, however, except another selfish motive. The impact of this book can be not only on how one views Christmas but all of life. God's perfect Word teaches, "It is more blessed to give than to receive (Acts 20:35)."
Rating: Summary: The True Meaning Of Christmas Review: First, this is definitely not your normal John Grisham book, but equally excellent, and a great read. The Kranks' daughter Blair is going to Peru with the Peace Corps, so she won't be home for Christmas. Luther being fed up with the whole holiday season convinces his wife, Nora, to just skip Christmas. They'll leave on a cruise on Christmas day, and won't have to deal with presents, trees, crowds, parties, shopping. None of it. It seems like a great idea until the backlash starts. The Kranks are tormented by carolers every night, and bothered by their neighbors for not decorating their house. Then they find out Blair is coming home with her new fiance. Luther and Nora have 6 hours to get everything together or Christmas truly will be ruined. But, with the help of their neighbors, and the spirit of Christmas everything works out perfectly. This book truly shows how commercial Christmas has become, but also the true meaning of friendship, love, and hardwork. The holiday season can be wonderful if you just remember that the true meaning of Christmas isn't how many presents you receive, but about family, friends, and love. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a story that will get you into the holiday spirit this Christmas
Rating: Summary: Don't skip this book! Review: Well woven tell of a couple's attempts to escape the ratrace and commerical tensel of another Christmas season! Grisham abandons his legal motif and strides off into this short novel (this reviewer read it in two brief settings) which in his tight, clear writing style, touches so many veins that we all have at the busy, holiday season ---- trudging around in weather, the commercialness getting to us --- all the time missing the blessings that can come when we let them. Great choice of name to the main character, Luther. I enjoyed this and will make use of it in my Christmas preaching. There is a good story here, one that can be shared, enjoyed and related at many levels of understanding and application.
Rating: Summary: A modern Magi gift Review: I read this book while waiting for a plane. I couldn't stop turning the pages. We have all had secret thoughts of skipping Christmas, or at least its madness, at least once. Although the actions may be predictable, the ending is not and once again the heart of Scrooge is melted. What a great Christmas gift book and should be one everyone's list who overdoses on Christmas madness.
Rating: Summary: Only a Krank Would Try to Skip Christmas Review: Specifically, Luther Crank---mild-mannered accountant who decides enough is enough. His only child is off in the jungles of Peru working with the Peace Corps, so why should he and his wife blow another $6,000 on useless gifts, gaudy decorations, and tossing a party. For only half that amount they could spend ten glorious days sunning in the Caribbean. And so Luther's plan is set in motion. For this one year, the Kranks will skip Christmas, skip the hassle, skip the frantic shopping, skip all the commericalized glory that has cast a shadow on the true meaning of Christmas. Can they do it? Can they forego buying a tree? Can they break it to the neighbors they will not mount their Frosty on the roof? Can they turn down all the charities that want a helping hand? Can they disappoint their friends and not toss their annual Christmas Eve bash? Grisham does turn a bit sappy at the end, but I loved the beauty of Luther's final scene with the Scheels and his satisfaction in delivering the perfect gift. This is a witty, clever, fast-paced read that made me laugh out loud in many parts. It has "made for TV movie" written all over it and if it provides half the smiles the book did, it will be a success.
Rating: Summary: You can't help but be touched by this one!!!!!!!!! Review: We've all been fed up with the hustle and bustle of the holiday season at one time or another. This book shows that feeling this way isn't necesarily a bad feeling but it's not what the holidays are all about. The lead character is Luther Krank, a man totally mad that he is going through another boring, debt-filled Christmas. He thinks if he ignores the holiday completely and goes on a cruise instead that it will pass un-noticed. He learns through trials and tribulations that money and crowds and last minute shopping are not at all what Christmas is about. Rather, friendship and family makes our lives worthwhile!! A treasure of a book that i'd highly reccommend to all and I will probably find myself reading every year at this time!
Rating: Summary: Amusing Tale of Christmas Stress~ Review: John Grisham has broken his mold in this amusing tale of holiday stress. Luther & Nora Krank decide to skip Christmas this year. When Luther crunches numbers and realizes how much money the holiday season costs him, they decide to forgo their traditional holiday rituals and opt for a Caribbean Cruise. How this affects Luther & Nora, their friends & co-workers and particularly their neighborhood provides some light hearted laughs. Filled with little stereotypes of nosy neighbors, how out of control the holidays can get and some of the craziness we will all go to in the spirit of the season, Grisham delivers a unique and entertaining story. Skipping Christmas is a light, fun read that will gear you up for some Christmas cheer.
