Rating: Summary: I'm not a mom, but this book touches the depths of my heart. Review: Where do I start? I read the reviews of some people and I am just amazed that they could read something perverse into this. I agree with one reviewer that if they put their stuffiness aside, they will see a simple and pure love this mother had for her child. Of course, no mother would ever rock her teenage or adult child to sleep, but forever in their hearts they would sing a sweet lullaby. That child was a very special part of her, and the love she instilled in every fiber of him carried over into his adulthood. He took care of his mother till her end, and that is why this book had a profound impact on me. I am not a mom yet, but I bought this book for my nieces, and I will buy this book for my children. It is a book I will cherish till the very end of my existence.
Rating: Summary: A sentimental treasure for mothers and young children Review: This sentimental treasure captures the essence of a mother's love for her child. The mother in the story vows to love her son forever, and in the end finds that love returned to her. A must read for mothers everywhere. I am a mother of three boys and it touches my heart every time we read it.
Rating: Summary: Open Your Heart When You Read This Review: Don't read this with just your eyes--open your heart. I picked this up off a stack when I was working with a 6-year old boy at our local school. He and I giggled all the way through, but I had a hard time staying composed at the end. I bet his mom would too! This is not about perversity or codependence. It's about love. The purest, deepest, most enduring love between parent and child. That's it. And it's just plain beautifully done. Hats off to the author who dedicated it to his stillborn babies. He knows love.
Rating: Summary: This is a "Butterfly Kisses" for moms! Review: I was reading this to my son and was teary eyed from about the midway point. In My opinion this is the mom's version of "Butterfly Kisses". Buy it for your mom!
Rating: Summary: You'll Laugh, You'll Cry Review: Some have said this book is fine until the character of the mother, in the grasp of her love for her son, starts impinging on his privacy by sneaking into his teenage and adult bedrooms at night to rock him and sing her touching ditty. Come ON, folks, it's FICTION! Adults reading it to their kids are not going to use these scenes as suggested courses of action when their kids grow up, and, when the kids themselves are older, they certainly won't be expecting Mom at the upstairs window odd nights. The point being creatively made is the ongoing strength of the mother's love and how it is reciprocated by, and transfers to, her beloved child. Don't "read in" inappropriateness or overlay adult ideas of unhealthy codependency on this unusual but imaginative story -- you may simply confirm the veracity of its central message by asking randomly selected mothers to read the book aloud; nearly all will be choked up with emotion by the last page. And what do the kids think? Well, we have 300+ children's books in our house, and my 2-year-old and 7-year-old still bring our 4-year-old copy over to the couch for reading time several times a month. Final note: One day, several of us moms, agreeing that we all loved this book, sang our versions of the song for each other. Each had come up with a different, lovely tune for the lyrics, and each occasionally sings it for her children even when the book is resting on the shelf.
Rating: Summary: Changed my outlook Review: I recently flew my two-year old nephew back East (as his parents drove) and picked this book out of the backpack my sister prepared for him. I was surprised to see that he knew the words - the rhyming is very nice - and ultimately how the book impacted me. I don't have children, but know now that I yearn for the love between a parent and a child. Reading the book to my nephew - with him curled in my lap at 30,000 feet - I knew then and there that I can't wait to be a mother. The most impressive part...he'll walk around the house chanting "I love you forever/I'll like you for always/As long as I'm living/My baby you'll be."
Rating: Summary: This book is the essence of being a parent. Review: Every mother I know who has read this book has cried. You can't explain what it is like to be a parent to someone who has never experienced it. This book does a good job of it though. I tell my children often that no matter how old they are, or what they do in their lives, I will always love them and always be their mother. Many thanks to Robert Munsch.
Rating: Summary: Weird isn't the word for it Review: I work at a children's book club and I am stunned. This is the oddest book I have ever read. I agree with a lot of the other reviewers...there is something perverse and very strange about the relationship in this book! Some people grew misty-eyed at Patch Adams, too.
Rating: Summary: Tearful Review: I cry everytime I read this book to my children. They enjoy each time we read it. I do have a suggestion to the author and illustrator, change the picture of the mother crawling on the floor and climbing into the sons window. This image can be disturbing to some people. Otherwise I love this book and recommend it to all.
Rating: Summary: This book makes me cry every time I read it. Review: A touching story. It is beautiful in it's simplicity and as typical of this authors books the illustrations are wonderful. I would reccommend this book for anyone who has the opportunity to read it to a child.
