Rating: Summary: A great companion book for your Bible Review: Sometimes, when bad things happen, people say, "well, that was God's will and you have to accept it." I never could go along with that or accept it in any way. This book, Science and Health, spoke to my heart because it talked about God in a way that made a lot of sense. Mrs. Eddy, the book's author, says that it is never God's will for us to be sick or sinful. That we have divine authority to rise above these problems and be conquerors, *because* God is all good! Mrs. Eddy proved these ideas in her own life and then wrote this book so she could teach others what she had learned. This book changed my life because it really introduced me to God and showed me that He never would create anything that would hurt His beloved child. And beyond that, I learned how to make prayer practical and applicable to every human need. This book really brings to light the "good news" of the Bible. I love it! Rose in Illinois
Rating: Summary: the inspired text of the bible explained by divine science Review: I am extremely grateful for this book. This book alongside the Bible have been my guide to deeper spiritual understanding and greater Love for God and my fellow man. It is dissapointing when I see the few that misunderstand the great Love that is involved with this book- in no way does Christain Science take away from what Jesus Christ demonstrated, in fact it brings the understanding of the Christ closer to our lives. It shows Jesus as our Master (a man who overcame the human belief in sin, illness and death- proved their non-existence through Life in the Christ). There have been so many people that this book has touched; so many people have found true freedom from things the thought would either end their life or that they would be bound by for the rest of their lives. This book shows how God heals and is the only God. I am so greatful for this book and I hope that so many others find healings and a deeper understanding of our one and only father today.
Rating: Summary: an important book Review: The concepts brought up in this book are definitely not your typical mainstream religious beliefs. Since reading this book - it took me quite a while - I am finding a new way of looking at my life. Much of what I've begun to notice has not been very pretty, but I was honestly unaware of the many deep-seeded beliefs that have gone unchallenged for my entire life. Through her book, Mary Baker Eddy has helped to give me a reason to challenge them. I know it could be a long time before I am able to live consistently to the standard set forth in this book, but I am sure that there is nothing else out there that even comes close to making sense of my relationship to God as is set forth in Science and Health. A friend also told me recently about a new website - spirituality.com - from which I am finding a lot of added inspiration to study this book. I have a feeling there will be a lot of talking about this book and its author in the near future.
Rating: Summary: Have you ever wondered how Jesus, Peter and Paul healed? Review: When Mrs. Eddy healed a dying person in the presence of the attending physician, he asked her to explain to him how she had done it. After listening to her explanation, he suggested that she write a book so that others could understand her method of spiritual healing. Science and Health is that book and has healed millions since its initial publication 125 years ago. I study it together with the Bible every day and have been healed of the full range of problems humans face in this century. Jesus taught his students to heal and instructed them to teach their students how to heal. Spiritual healing was an important part of Christianity until it was lost when millions of Romans were converted from paganism to Christianity about 300 years after Jesus. Mrs. Eddy re-discovered it and spent the rest of her life healing, teaching and writing how the early Christians healed. I recommend that you buy her book and discover spiritual healing for yourself. There is nothing richer in life than to experience God's healing touch--unless it is in healing someone else. Let the adventure begin!
Rating: Summary: Don't Leave Home without This Book Review: Do you want to travel light and yet take everything you could possibly need? Pack this book and the Bible in your bag and be prepared for anything. Besides being a "good read," Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures unlocks the Bible and provides immediate help for lost luggage, direction or life and health problems. The list of the good it does is endless. Besides reading for my benefit, I read these two books in order to be of help to those I meet along the way. You don't have to say a word when you know what is true and who you truly are. The effect of Truth understood is powerful and often immediately visible in practical ways. One dark night when I had been praying to know the Truth about what seemed to be congestion in my head, I suddenly came upon a herd of maybe a dozen deer standing on the two-lane highway. A large truck was stopped in the other lane and most of the deer were now standing in my lane. I could not stop or swerve. But when I came to the herd they split apart enough to allow me to drive through and just lightly brush only one deer's rump. Congestion was relieved in two practical ways that night and my study of Science and Health was proved helpful once again. Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, has stood the test of 125 years in a changing world without going out of date. It's chapter on Prayer is particularly insightful and timeless. One definition of special interest for today is: "Angels. God's thoughts passing to man; spiritual intuitions, pure and perfect; the inspiration of goodness, purity, and immortality, counteracting all evil, sensuality, and mortality." (S&H p.581) This book has something for all. So, I tell everyone: Don't leave home without this book...
Rating: Summary: A ready reference Review: I'm reading a lot of books on spirituality these days. Science and Health ranks right up there with the best of them. Its all about healing through prayer and its all based on the Bible. I like using the word index in the back to help me find ideas on things I want to pray about. AND, there is a companion web site for the book that is so cool! You can look words or phrases and find quotes that are really helpful!
Rating: Summary: A long awaited improvement on a classic Review: Its the same book, all right, but you might not recognize it at first. (I didn't.) The print is more modern and easy to read, and it contains a much-needed index. Furthermore, there is space in the margins for notes. Same text, better format.
Rating: Summary: An eminently practical book. Review: If I could keep only one volume from my extensive library, this book would be it.
Rating: Summary: How to be healthy, how to love Review: I have always considered myself to be a pretty strong person (except in times of weakness of course), but since reading this book I have known calm and confidence like never before. What's more is that the ideas herein have inspired me to learn how to love unconditionally ALL of my neighbors--as far as I'm concerned, that means this book has already made the world a slightly better place. The author explains a higher idea of man and woman through her ultimately logical insight into Biblical teachings, especially the words and works of that lovely, awesome one called Jesus, the one who demonstrated true Manhood. It is impossible to judge these ideas by the reaction of societal groups or by hearsay, or by a few reader reviews--you simply must "try the spirits" for yourself. All who are willing to take up their right to health, happiness, love, and freedom of thought, take heed: She wrote this book especially for you.
Rating: Summary: Christian, not mind/body Review: The wide range of reactions expressed in the reviews here attest the importance of this book. As with the Bible, it needs to be approached on its own terms and not viewed through the lens of those that misapply it or add doctrines not present in the original text. The Book Description given above is somewhat misleading. The author explicitly rejects mind/body teachings ("animal magnetism") as pertaining to the "carnal mind" condemned by Paul, and shows how true healing comes only from the divine Mind, God. Its "spirituality" is divine as opposed to psychological. This is definitely not a "new age" or "self help" book, but a deeply Christian work in the most positive sense of the term. It presents vital primitive Christianity free from the hierarchy, sexism, dogma and arcane doctrines added by others to Jesus' teachings and addresses his expectation that his followers would heal (Matt 10:8, Luke 10:9).
