Summary: Changed my life
Review: Before reading this book, and then becoming a member of the Christian Science church, I had many health and personnal problems. I am happy to say that I am now free of all of them, because I now know that I am God's child, made in His image, and I know that Jesus was here to teach me this by his words and his demonstrations. I am really grateful and I recommend this book to everyone.

Summary: Keep it in context
Review: Just to address the April 10, 2001 review from Cincinnati, I really think it should be made known that this individual gave misleading information by quoting Science and Health using "..." and leaving out essential words. I am the first to admit that this is a book with truly radical ideas. It does not bother me a bit that people may feel challenged by what they read. I just think that readers should not be influenced by incomplete quotations to think that this book is complete nonsense.

May I suggest to those who may be interested in finding out more of what this book is really about - check out spirituality.com. You can read and study the entire Science and Health (plus the entire Bible) any time you want for free. In case you did not read the review I referred to above, I will list the page numbers that were quoted incompletely so that you can read them in context for yourself: pages 197, 155, 421, 426, and 196.

Lastly, why on earth would people lie about their gratitude for healings they had as a result of reading this book? Not just the people whose testimonies are given in the book's final chapter, but the literally hundreds of thousands of testimonies that can be found throughout the history of the Christian Science periodicals. But don't take my word for it - go to any Christian Science Reading Room and read them for yourself. Every issue ever published is available to be read at every Reading Room.

My own gratitude to this book and its author is beyond measure.

Summary: Seems Mary Baker Eddy Was Years Ahead of Her Time
Review: It is interesting to read other reviews from readers of this book. It earns either 5 stars or just 1, depending apparently where the readers are coming from, either for or against the religion Mary Baker Eddy established called Christian Science

This woman was early and bold, as a female in the 19th century when women had such limited powers and personal rights, to write and to live by what was considered to be radical thinking at that time. Her concept was principally that matter is not what it appears to be and that we are fundamentally spiritual beings. Now 125 years after the release of the book, respected authors such as Deepak Chopra, great humanitarians seeking spiritual truths such as Sir John Templeton and others appear to be agreeing, by saying that there is still much to learn about spiritually that is more than meets the "human eye". We are just scratching the surface of whatever reality really is and Mrs. Eddy pioneered this effort as one of the first.

One reader giving the book but one star states that healing through its "teachings" does not work, that evidence is only anecdotal. I can vouch that my grandfather was completely healed of stomach cancer on the very night he was expected to die. The disease had been diagnosed and a doctor was in attendance in a hospital room. That is not anecdotal. I was in the room.

One thing that I personally liked about reading the book was the author's desire to "bless all mankind". She didn't seem to be promoting her church, but wanted to share what she thought she had learned with people of all religious persuasions. It may have been one of the first "self help" books. Written 125 years ago, it seems to be one of the most enduring.

The book made me think and joins other good books in respecting the ancient scriptures while providing some illumination of them.

Summary: When all else has failed
Review: When all else has failed, the truths in the book Science and Health continue to be a life-line to me and my family. I have been studying and practicing the precepts taught in this book for many years. My children and I have experienced so many healings as a result of knowing God better, which has come as a result of reading and deeply considering Mary Baker Eddy's definition of God in the Glossary of this book. Perhaps the most helpful chapter is the first one on Prayer, which takes the mystery out of how to pray and explains the immediate access we have to Him as a loving and ever-present Father-Mother. Without exaggeration, I would say to any reader that if there was only one book to ever own and read in addition to the Bible, this is it.

Summary: Deceptive, dangerous
Review: It is disheartening to read the reviews of Science and Health; many indicate that yet another generation is being led down a very carefully decorated garden path. It is a deadly one.

First, let's address the contents of this book; some examples follow.

About the desirability of ignorance: "The less is said about physical structures or laws..the farther mortals will be removed from imbecility or disease." (pg. 197) So much for physics, astronomy, and engineering. And, "the less we know or think about hygiene, the less we are predisposed to sickness." (Pg. 389.) On pg. 197, "It was the ignorance of our forefathers...that made them hardier than our trained physiologists,...

Then we have the dismissal of the polio vaccine, of the smallpox vaccine, and of all of medicine: "..erroneous general belief ..produces all medical results." (pg. 155)

Science and Health tells you to stay away from medical care: "You weaken or destroy your power when you resort to any except spiritual means," (pg.181) and "..you should not build it (disease) up...by employing a single material application for its relief."(pg. 421) So forget removing the cancer, or even having any pain relief as you die from it.

Of course, if you believe this book, you won't die. The author says " ..the body cannot die, because it has no life to surrender." (Pg. 426) But, if you fail in your belief, and you do die, it will be because you sinned. "Sin alone brings death,.." (pg. 196)

All of Science and Health is based on the belief that matter is an illusion, and that our senses are liars. It tells us that eyes do not see, nor ears hear. It follows that you need to be prepared to give up anything and everything if you are going to believe what it says. Read this book, and try to follow its teachings, and you will deny your own humanity, (not to mention the humanity of Jesus.) If you try to think logically about it, you will work yourself into a corner where you have to recognize that your human life is unimportant. In fact, you must "know" that you were never born into a material body.

Finally, the "testimonies" at the end of the book notwithstanding, its teachings are not effective in healing. There has never been anything but anecdotal evidence that it is.

Science and Health is a badly composed, seductive, untruthful, and dangerous book. It is a great cruelty to encourage anyone to believe its message.

Summary: Life changing
Review: This book has redefined "Life" for me. It was shared with me over 20 years ago, and since that time I have been a student of its laws with wonderful results. It has no equal. Anyone approaching it with an open mind will find answers to all the tough questions.

Summary: A Reference Book For Spiritual Fulfillment
Review: In the Preface to this book, Mary Baker Eddy dedicates Science and Health to "honest seekers for Truth". I've been reading this book, along with the Bible, for many years. It's helped me to gain a deeper understanding of the Bible's message. It's also shown me how to find solutions to life's challenges through prayer.

The truth contained in this book is immediately demonstrable in practical ways. One day I began to come down with a very bad cold. I had plans that evening and didn't want the way I was feeling to ruin my plans. I decided to pray with one of the powerful truths in this book..."Become conscious for a single moment that Life and intelligence are purely spiritual, - neither in nor of matter, - and the body will then utter no complaints. If suffering from a belief in sickness, you will find yourself suddenly well". When I recognized this to be true, all the symptoms of the cold vanished immediately and completely.

The ideas in Science and Health have transformed my life. It truly is a reference book for spiritual fulfillment. This is a book you won't want to miss!

Summary: life changing
Review: This book is not a light read but a whole course meal-a reference book for life. It's non-denominational and can appeal to anyone, no matter what background or religious belief. It explains a practical spiritual approach to healing. The term Christian Science is coined to mean the universal laws of God or Truth that can be applied to any situation needing help. You can read it front to back, by chapter, or one line here or there. The index in the back is very helpful if you are working on a particular issue, ie. drinking, drugs, etc. The last 100 pages are written by people who have been healed simply by reading the book. I, myself, have been healed of all kinds of problems using the ideas here.

Summary: Read This Book
Review: I was healed by reading this book. Healed of the flu, injuries suffered from a bad fall, stomach disorder, lumps on the chest, and more. I've also learned how to heal others by using the ideas in this book. It's written in a new language, for new ideas, so keep at it. This book will make you better at whatever vocation and avocation you pursue -- whatever mosque, temple, shrine, or church you do or do not attend!

Summary: Fallen off the path, hidden deceptions
Review: I've gone through this book for many years, and by itself its easy to see how Ms. Eddy came to these interpretations. However, when you match Science & Health up against the Bible as a whole, many things are taken out of context and do not match up with the rest of the Bible. It is very deceiving in hidden ways, though I believe that was not Ms. Eddy's intent, but this book is very off of the truth that the Lord Jesus Christ taught Himself. This book very picks and chooses what parts of the Bible it likes and then ignores the rest of it. I do believe a person can be healed by God, however this conveys the deceiving attitude that you can do it yourself; claiming that sin, disease, and death are just illusions. Please, I pray that you would search the Bible for your answers, comparing it as a whole within itself and pray for guidance on how to understand the bible. For I know God loves to give wisdom, if one justs asks and sincerely seeks Him. God bless and I hope this review is enlightening and forewarning.
