Summary: Excellent Book, Many Practice Questions, MORE Than Enough!
Review: I just passed my Network+ exam today and I owe it all to David Groth for writting such an excellent book! I passed with a sccore of 801 out of 900 (89%) and I am only 15 YEARS OLD! I used this book plus Sybex Network+ Test Center, but I owe passing all to this one book. It is written very well, and makes everything easy to understand. All you need is this one book to pass the Network+ easily.

I read this book through about 3 times, first just cover to cover, second cover to cover highlighting important concepts, and the third time just read my highlights. After reading it about three times, I scored a 85% and 89% on the two included practice tests and felt like I was ready to go (most recommend getting at least 90% before trying though). I used two tests from the Virtual Test Center, but those questions were MUCH HARDER than the ones on the real test and didn't help much for the actual test.

This book is split into 10 detailed chapters, about everything you need to know to get started in a Networking carrer. I just complete my A+ Certification two months ago, and if it weren't for school I could have got my Network+ in less than a month. This book covers everything and more that you will see on the test (well, maybe except for 2 or 3 questions, but that's out of 65). The questions are all farily simple, but the hard part is that you need a 752 out of 900 (around 83%) to pass, which is much higher than other IT Certifications. But with this book, you will REALLY understand all the different things and as long as you memorize a few of the essentials (IEE groups, TCP/IP Addresses, TCP/IP Switches, etc.) you will easily pass. Just make sure to read the book a few times, because to get that 752 you NEED to know nearly all of the book.

In addition to the book being awesome, the 20 practice questions at the end of each chapter and the two COMPLETE practice tests on CD (one of them is also in the book) are really what prepare you. More than 3/4 of my test were questions that I had seen before from those practice questions. All the practice questions and detailed answers and really help you grasp the concepts and prepare for the test. There are over 500 questions included with the book, so it's all you need to pass (don't make the mistake I did and waste money on the Virtual Test Center). In addition, to get you started there is an Assesment Test, which really helps you see how much you have to study and in which areas.

Overall, the combination of an excellent book with over 500 practice questions that are nearly identical to the questions from the real thing, this makes for GREAT VALUE and necessary tool to pass the Network+ test. You can spend less than 40 bucks on this book with the practice questions and easily pass if you put your mind to it. Forget wasting $1000's of dollars on classes, this is all you need to succeed!

Summary: Good, well organized...but shouldn't use alone
Review: I just took the Network+ exam and passed with a 92%. Mr Groth's Study Guide was a big reason I did so well. I have been working in the IT industry for 2 years, and have my A+ certification as well. The only other reference material I used was Exam Cram's Practice Tests. I thought the study guide was VERY well organized. As I read through it, I took detailed notes which seemed to re-enforce the information. I used the CD-ROM as well, but, as with many, it has some bugs. A couple of the drag-and-drop questions score your answer as wrong, when in fact you're correct. (Annoying!) It also wouldn't let me go back to review my answers after I had answered all of them, the "previous" button froze my machine a couple times. All in all, this was a great tool, and I highly recommend it, besides the CD problems; which can be dealt with.

Summary: Best book out there
Review: I took and passed the Network+ exam today using this book almost exclusively to prepare for the exam. I passed with a 800/900 score.I have to let others out there who are preparing for this test know that this book is the one for you and covers everything you need to pass the exam.I used this book and only this book and I passed first time. Once again David Groth has made a superb book. Good luck out there who are taking this test.

Summary: Great For The Exam
Review: I decided to write because other people's review helped me a lot, hence "my turn now". I just passed the Netwok+ exam an hour ago with a score of 789 (minimum passing score 752). It's far from a record, but Hey! this is my first certification exam and i only past 10 hours at max on this book (not even a week-end!), so i'm satisfied.I really recomend that you go through it in depth though, and don't you worry you'll do just fine. Everything on the test was on the book, but you need understanding rather than memorisation to answer some of the scenarios on the test. In conclusion 5 very well deserved stars for Mr Groth... and anybody who's interested in taking network+, i advise you hurry before the new exam comes in, i read it's 147 questions instead of 65 (that's gotta be a pain) Good Luck eveybody !...

Summary: Gorth is better than before - no suprise here!
Review: In the world of Network+ there are certain names that comes to the top of the list when deciding what material is best. David Groth is one of the most respected names in the industry and his second edition of Network+ is another example of why.

Groth improves on his previous edition right from the very beginning with a handy tear out network+ study card. Also to make sure that you are ready there is exam objective and an assessment test in the front of the book.

Once that is completed the book then goes on to covers topics like the OSI model, Fundamentals of LANS, WANS, topology, cables, network hardware, and NOSs like Netware, Unix, NT and OS/2. All this is covered up to chapter 5.

Chapter 6 through 10 takes on the areas of Network installations, upgrades, remote access, security, disaster recovery and troubleshooting. Groth covers the objective in a logical easy to follow order and give you more information than the exam calls for.

Typical to most books Groth writes, there are review questions, figures, diagrams, tables and a practice exam. Included in the book is a cd with hundreds of questions. Also are electronic flash cards, a self-assessment test and an e-book for both the pc and palm tops. No there are no more excuses - excellent job!

Summary: Great text, but it's probably overkill for passing Net+
Review: The text itself is excellent, but the Net+ exam is so pathetically easy that if you know anything about the internet and tcp/ip, you could probably pass the test without ever opening a book. In fact, I have never heard of a person who has failed. If you have any kind of networking experience, I'd take one of the free practice tests that can be found online. If you consistently get 80% or above, you can probably just go ahead and take the test. I used this book and studied for about 2 1/2 weeks, and I really didnt' learn anything new. I easily passed with a 873/900. However, if you have virtually no experience with networking, this is an excellent text to get.

The only thing I'd be aware of is that this book is very Windows-oriented, so it kind of skims over AppleTalk, Netware and even Unix. However, there is sufficient information on each of those topics to pass.

Again, the Net+ exam is ridiculously easy...so don't dump $40+ on a book if you don't have to.

Summary: This book was all I needed
Review: Today, I passed the Network+ (N10-002) exam with 93,3%! and all I needed was just this book.
It is written very clear and together with all the pictures makes this book very complete.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Excellent book for the exam
Review: I studied almost exclusively from this book for the exam, and passed with flying colors. The practice questions are almost word for word the ones encountered on the Exam. I looked at a couple other books, and they were way off of the material needed for the exam.

It would be 5 stars, but the OSI model isn't explained as clearly as it could have been. I actually had to read a chapter from another book to get a solid understanding of the model.

Having said that, if you know the material covered in this book, and the material in the practice exams, you should be able to pass the exam.

Summary: Has most of what you need to know...
Review: I took and passed the Network+ exam today using this book almost exclusively to prepare for the exam. I passed with a 780/900. I have to let it be known to others out there preparing for this test that this book does not contain ALL the information you need to know. This book will touch on most subjects, but many subjects do not go in-depth enough for this to be the all-knowing Network+ study companion. To be more specific from what I can recall from the test, there were some very specific questions about Linux client configuration and DSL configuration that were not discussed about at all in this book. Strong points of the book are the tables and graphics, they will point out all the major specifications you will need to memorize for this test. The most notable ones I recall are the well-known ports and IEEE 802 standards. The included CD has alot of practice questions even though as mentioned in some of the other reviews there are some typos and some conflicting technical information that can confuse the reader. I was going to give this book a 3 star rating, but realizing that this book still did help me to pass the exam, I have given in a 4 star instead. Just remember, it doesn't have EVERYTHING. Good luck out there.

Summary: Review correction
Review: Webmaster: Thank you for posting my review of the Network+ Study Guide this week. I did notice one typo in the review. Please replace "There are many usefully pictures, graphs. . ." with "There are many useful pictures, graphs. . .".

Thanks,
Kenneth Levesque
