Summary: This book is riddled with errors
Review: David Groth's "Network + Study Guide" is plagued with typos, omissions, and errors. Most disturbing are the numerous technical content mistakes. In many cases, these mistakes serve to further confuse a reader who is already struggling to grasp the nuances of Networking. Note: many of the errors are found in the Chapter Review Questions, and companion CD's Practice Exams. Clearly, no one at Sybex bothered to proofread this book's technical content before release.
On the positive side, the book is well illustrated. There are many usefully pictures, graphs, and diagrams. The content of the book does closely mirror the content of the Network + exam (I just took the exam today).
So, if you can get through the book without pulling your hair out, you will probably pass the exam. But make it easier on yourself and find another Network + study guide.

Summary: Yet another dismal failure from Groth & Sybex
Review: I don't even know who to blame at this point: the author or the technical editors. NUMEROUS CONTENT MISTAKES in this text. And as usual, they did NOT return any of my emails when I pointed out their typically erroneous information [see my review of their i-Net+ book]. I HIGHLY recommend that newbies use the EXAM CRAM 2 book instead.

Summary: OK - but lots of mistakes
Review: The book was OK - but I would suggest Network+ Training Guide by Drew Bird and Mike Harwood if you want to pass the test (although the CD practice test is useless and nothing but a plug to buy more material from PrepLogic). Lots of mistakes in Groth's book and even mistakes in his CD-ROM practice test material (RAID 0 doesn't disk strip?). I even attempted to reach him on the internet to point out his mistakes, but no luck. I am not impressed with Sybex. If this is the best they can do, I'll definitely not use them for my MCSA material.

Summary: Great study guide for exam
Review: I recommend this book for anyone who is planning on taking the Network +. I read this book cover to cover and completed all of the included questions, exams, and used the flashcards. It is written well for a test prep book. Lots of quick reference charts that will allow you to memorize the information that you need to know. After reading an reviewing the material, I took several Transcender practice exams and scored high. This book may not give you everything that you need, but it did well for me. I just passed the Network + about half an hour ago with an 860/900.

Summary: Five Stars For Groth
Review: Far too few engineers can truly articulate what they know. Groth is one of them. His book is an excellent read and a very good review. The materials are pretty comprehensive and will get you through the exam, but a supplementary text like Tod Lammle's CCNA study guide should be at hand. There are always subtle issues that an author misses or doesn't provide enough detail on.

The only downside here is that there are a couple of "important" test questions on the CD (one on subnetting and one on ISDN, for example)that were not well edited and the answers are wrong. That will get you in a bit of trouble on the exam.

All that said, I'd certainly buy a second text from Groth. My presumption (in advance) would be that it would be well written and organized like this one.

Summary: Groth's book gets it done.
Review: I just passed the Network+ Exam N10-002 with an 873 of a possible 900 points. David Groth's 3rd Edition Study Guide has all you really need to pass. Pay particular attention to his "Exam Essentials" at the end of each chapter.....these are an excellent guide as to what you must know for the exam. Does this book cover everything? No, but there's more than enough here to help you pass, if you take the time to learn it.

Summary: Excellent Book
Review: I love this book. I took a course approximately 6 months before i read this book. Between the course and the book, i didn't study. After reading this book, i knew i was 100% ready. The book uses terminology that an average joe shmoe could comprehend. If you want to pass the exam with or without a course, this is the only book that you'll need to pass the exam. I passed the network+ exam the 1st time with this book.

Summary: Just got certified
Review: Just passed the Net+ today and read some other peoples reviews since I was looking for a book to use for Server+. I was pleased with my score of 806 out of 900 and the only study material I used was the Sybex book. I agree that it does not cover all of the questions posed by the exam but I used Mike Meyers All-in-One for the A+ and although it was a much larger volume, it did not cover EVERY question either. As in Meyers's book, I found some typos and incorrect answers to review and practice questions, but only a few. In comparison I found TONS of errors in some other (to remain unnamed) practice tests. I suggest to writers of tech info to HAVE SOMEONE PROOFREAD! It seems as if in this most precise science, networking, that writers are more interested in publishing quickly than being correct. I found Groth's style to be more dry than Meyer's but also more to the point. I can definitely recommend this book but based on the Server+ reviews, I am going to buy the Server+ Certification Bible.

Summary: A really nice book to read
Review: I liked the book, I read the book carefully the first time and went back to the chapters I had troubles with and redid the 20Qs test at the end of them. I like the way Mr.Groth put things together and the examples he gives to explain a certain technology, which sometimes makes me laugh, but certainly understand what he is trying to convey in his book. This is the first book I read about him and really like his style. This book as well as the Network+ Lab from Sybex, (which by the way there is something wrong about it, read my other review for that product if you want to know) were the only reference materials I used to pass the exam on my first try (although not with the score I had liked :( bummer ) The companion cd comes with lots of questions that will help you feel confident enough to go and take the test. I would say it has like around 356 practical questions to try plus the flashcards for your PC or PDA. It has like 65 flashcards all told.

Now I have two CompTIA certifications and I'm looking forward to get my iNet+ and MCSA too. Good luck to all of you who are planning on taking this test soon.

Summary: Good enough to pass the exam.
Review: And may be to learn a thing or two about computer networking. If you are ready to take it to the next level and get Cisco certified, check out "Cisco IOS for IP Routing" by Andrew Colton. Unless you want to take the Microsoft Road...
