Rating: Summary: Groth and Sybex continually produce great study aide! Review: The White Rabbit put on his spectacles. `Where shall I begin, please your Majesty?' he asked. `Begin at the beginning,' the King said gravely, `and go on till you come to the end: then stop.' I'm very fond of the white rabbit in Alice in Wonderland, he is a symbol of wisdom and magic. This is the best advice I can give when it comes to studying for an exam, any exam, but especially this one. If you don't have a thorough understanding of networking fundamentals, you will struggle with all other related concepts. Sybex consistently publishes high quality computer education and reference titles. More importantly to you, they consciously make an effort to keep the content of these manuals current with the constantly changing technology and objectives of certification providers. CompTIA is the certifying authority for the Network+ certification. Here is what they say about the individual that should obtain this certification and what this certification should mean to a potential employer. Network+ is a CompTIA vendor neutral certification that measures the technical knowledge of networking professionals with at least 9 months experience in network support or administration. The test is administered by NCS/VUE and Prometric'. Earning the Network+ certification means that the candidate possesses the knowledge needed to configure and operate a variety of networking products. This exam covers a wide range of vendor and product neutral networking technologies that can also serve as a prerequisite for vendor-specific IT certifications. This is the 3rd Edition of this book. It has been updated to cover the new exam objectives for the revised Network+ exam. The format of the book appeals to my analytical geek mind. The chapters progress from fundamental concepts to more advanced concepts. At the beginning of each chapter is an outline of the specific concepts covered by that chapter and the related exam objective. The book is replete with helpful diagrams and illustrated graphics of different pieces of network hardware, so that you can visually identify those that are unfamiliar to you. The Introduction reviews exam objectives, and explains that the objectives are divided into four domains. It further breaks down the objectives to indicate by percentage the extent to which each of the four domains are on the exam, and further specifies each objective and the scoring weight given each objective on the exam. Following the Introduction is an assessment test. The assessment test and the practice tests are one of the many features that make this a great book. This book contains 20 question practice test after chapter, and two full practice tests on the companion CD-ROM, that works out to over 500 practice questions... read the entire view here:...
Rating: Summary: An excellent resource to pass the Network+ exam Review: This book is excellent. Although I have been "officially" working in the computer industry now for about 4 years, it has only been in the last year that I have taken the time to persue computer certifications. I first took the A+ exam to get a relatively easy cert under my belt. Then I set my sights on the Network+ cert. I cannot thank David Groth enough for writing such a comprehensive and yet fairly easy to digest book. Stupid me procrastinated (as usual)and only started reading the book 3 weeks before the date I had scheduled for my exam and finished reading the book just 2 days before my exam. I still passed with an 86%. While no book is perfect (I still saw a couple of questions on the exam that I know were not covered in the book), this book will give you all the information you need to pass the exam. Anyway, everyone knows that real world experience, and not untried book knowledge, is what really matters in the technology field. Kudos David Groth!!!!!
Rating: Summary: Groth never ceases to amaze me with his work!! Review: I was hired by a client to teach a Network+ class, and the client had no idea what book to use, we decided on the book based on the reputation of the author and a previous version of the book.. After watching the entire class pass the exam first time I can now see why David Groth is an industry expert on the subject matter. With over 550 pages, Groth has made very short work of the exam and the exam objectives. Beginning with the fundamentals of topologies, hardware and basic network elements. Groth then spends the next 50+ pages on the OSI model, the key element in networking. Again as with the 2nd edition there are over 100 pages just for TCP/IP. Groth covers each objective of the newest exam, N10-002, and his detail and documentation are excellent, something that had become a standard with his work. There are over 200 questions in the book to work with plus essential exam information has also been included. In the front of the book there is an objective breakdown quick reference card that you can refer to at anytime, there by allowing you to keep track of your progress. As with previous versions, there is a cd with practice exams to give you a chance at the exam before going live. Also included is flashcards both for the pc and palm and like other books from Groth this one is sure to be a winner.
Rating: Summary: Great book, good sample tests Review: This book is concise and well organized. There were a few problems with some of the test questions, but nothing that you won't immediately figure out and work around. The sheer number of test questions and different types of tests make this a must have. This book blows the socks off Coriolis Exam Prep which is full of inconsistencies and test answers that are just plain wrong.
Rating: Summary: Book is good, test engine bad Review: I found the book very useful, good details and analogies. the test engine is a great idea, but it has so many errors that it becomes quickly annoying.
Rating: Summary: Great book Review: This book is easy to understand and follow. It's very in-depth in most areas. The one area I would have liked to see more work on was Netbeui, as I never felt it explained it well. Besides that, the book is excellent. The practice exams are hard, but will help you to figure out what you need to go over more. I didn't find many errors, and none that would have really messed me up. Great book, buy it!
Rating: Summary: The book I have been looking for... Review: I don't have a strong networking experience. After I read the reviews at Amazon.com I thought this was the right book for me. It explains everything clearly. Very easy to read. Even the most technological terms are explained clear enough for beginners. I took my certification exam after reading this book twice and I passed. However, you should not rely on the practice questions that come with the book. Try to learn as you read. Thank you Mr. Groth. Irecommend this book everybody who is planning to take the test.
Rating: Summary: This book is great! Review: If you absolutely must pass the Network+ exam, then this is the book for you. This book teaches to the test. the included cd has the entire text to do searches and hundreds of practice questions in test formats that appear similar to the real exam. also many practice questions are nearly identical to the actual exam. I read through the book the spent over 50 hours on the pactice tests. i scored 826/900 on the actual exam. that correspnts to roughly 91%. the bad news is that i will need a better book to keep in my office as a reference. if its not on the test, its not in this book.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Network+ Review Review: Just passed the Network+ exam with 863. I read this book cover to cover and did all questions on the CD. The TCP/IP Utilities chapter is very good and you will see that on the exam. Suggest reading this book and have lots of practical hands-on experience before attempting the exam.
Rating: Summary: Good book but .... Review: I've seen so many people who are very happy with this book. I was NOT so enthused. I passed, like everybody else, but the book does NOT cover everything on the exam. I like the COMPTIA exams having done Server+ and Network+ now. I like the fact that they are BROAD, and try to ask questions from real life. Most books, including this one, are not broad enough to be able to handle this. It is pretty hard to try to cover Unix, Netware as well as all the rest of the networking stuff. Maybe because of the new test version I ran into this more than some of the first reviewers. The book is well written, clear, etc, but I get the feeling it is only written to help you pass the test and lacks any passion to go further or give background. I'd rather they went a bit deeper here and there, explaining more background. I'd love to see more passion. However, if all you care about is passing the exam, this book is probably one of the top three out there. There is also an error in the section on back ups. The DAT Aautoloader 24x6 is not meant to be used to exceed the max capacity of one tape per back up, it is only meant to make life easier in not having to remove the tape each morning. Think of the weekend!
