Summary: Good name for the book which simply sucks.
Review: I have heard a lot about this book. Anyway, I have not discovered anything new. Third Generation of Web Sites? It's old, man!

Examples are lame - sometimes you have no idea what the author is talking about, and the examples make it even more confusing.

Don't waste your time!

Summary: terrible
Review: The book was pathetic and I agree with another's statementthat it was an insult to my desgin experience. Illustrations werelame and if I wanted an HTML book I would have bought one.

Summary: A very good book
Review: I am wondering if some of the reviews below were of the same book I read. Encouraging lots of "chrome" graphics? Encouraging form over content? Only designing pages that look good with one combination of platform and browser? In the book *I* have, Mr. Siegal specifically warns against *all* these things.

As for Mr. Siegal's overuse of the word "I", I can only assume that the people who are offended by this have never read anything other than technical manuals written entirely in the passive voice (which I find more irritating, and I are an engineer :>). He is explaining how he does things, using specific examples. He is writing in the first person. There is nothing wrong with that.

I agree that this book is not the only one you will need; I certainly needed a regular techie-oriented HTML reference in addition, to teach myself the basics. But as a tool to get you thinking about your Web page in a totally different way, this is a great book. I guess that's not what some people want.

Summary: Disappointing
Review: I expected so much more from a book of this title. I wasn't impressed. I've been a highly successful desgner for 12 years and this was what I might consider insulting to my inteligence, and design sensibilities. Do we have to listen to David's crap to learn what we need to know about site design?

Summary: I get total confused!
Review: I want to buy a good Web Design book, I thought I found one but... After reading so much reviews above. I really don't know what to do! Rating from 1 to 10, Words from worst to best. It's a freedom world, people got freedom choice.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Killer Sites: Its about Web presence, not web pages.
Review: Creating Killer Web Sites takes web page development outside of the HTML and puts it where it belongs: Design. Any book can tell you about HTML. No other book around will give you the wealth of knowledge on web site design that Killer Sites will.
It's not just a "read once book", it's a "read over and over and refer back to it daily and don't let anyone touch your copy" kind of book.

Summary: Propably the best book yet on Webdesign...
Review: I'm a 23 year old Swedish boy studying IT. I hope to work with Webdesign and I must say that this book has given me alot of new ideas and approaches to the way of designing Websites. I have borrowed the book, but now I'm bying it.... It's with a great sence of pleasure I can recommend it to others that are involved with webdesign. Buy it now, you won't regret it. To the author David Siegel: THANK YOU! You made my day!

Summary: *the* book for Killer Site development.
Review: If you don't already know HTML, this book isn't going to help you. But if you do, it's a must-have. The best part for me was advice on rendering text in photoshop, along with good explanations on how to get the most our of your image colors for web sites - a difficult thing to do. Also of note is the advice the book gives on site construction. Instead of the standard "here's my page with links" it suggests a different model, one that when finished feels more deep and complete. Finally, from a creative standpoint, it really gives some good ideas on what you can do on the web. If you are designing sites, my advice to you is buy it.

Summary: Great presentation. Just use what you like.
Review: I'd seen this book in a number of bookshops and finally bought it whilst on holiday in Canada. Like a few other reviewers, I found the constant references to his 'personal' sites irratating, especially when he comments that they 'act as a guide for a whole generation of web designers'. I also can't help thinking that a lot of his ideas are targeted purely at commercial sites. This is not a bad thing, but where information, rather than image, as the commodity are concerned the book is thin on ideas, IMHO. However, having said all that, the book is beautiful and presents lots of great ideas for how to make web pages more attractive, interesting and likely to prompt return visitors. Like most other readers of this book, by chapter 3 I was thinking how my own web sites could be improved by having a 'third-generation' approach. The book's expensive, but is worth reading for the hundreds of gems of ideas contained in it. If only more site designers read this book.

Summary: Utterly fascinating..Chock full of Ideas and Concepts!
Review: I have spent my fair share on various and sundry books, tutorials, software and the like, each promising web sites of ethereal perfection. In a word, Not!

I can not say what it may offer to those who are professionals, but to those of my experience (advanced, but not a professional), it was a Godsend. Mr. Siegel presents his ideas concisely and with a touch of humor. Yes, he does indeed use "I" quite frequently, but Good Grief, HE's the one who authored the BOOK! We buy it for HIS knowledge and creativity, and neither are lacking in the least.

I am by no means a "newbie" to web design, and though I did not like each and every suggestion offered, I learned in a manner of days what I had not in well over a year of doing web pages. His ideas are fresh, useful, and most of all creative. He has a specific manner in which he chooses to tackle web design, and I LIKE IT!

I recommend this book to all that I can. In fact, I LOAN it to those that can not/will not purchase it, for the mere fact that I consider it to be imperative reading! The cost of this book is money well-spent, and for those that whine and groan about it, deal with it. There does not exist a web designer who will not benefit from perusing this book. I loved it. If the author has an ego, SO BE IT! He is fantastically talented..He has EARNED an EGO.
