Rating: Summary: The best servlet book! Review: I learned servlet by reading this book and then consulting Sun's specs. Now I don't need to keep it by my side anymore, but I've lent it to my colleagues, and I highly recommend it to anybody who's moving from CGI or proprietary app servers to servlet/jsp/EJB. The book gave me an excellent conceptual introduction to the fundamentals of servlet. Admittedly, this book doesn't cover the latest spec (well, no book can really chase that moving target), but with the knowledge gained from it, it is much easier to read the ever changing specs from Sun, and I can actually make more sense out of the specs. This book has chapters which are not strictly talking about servlet, but those chapters are helpful too, because they serve as good examples of how servlet can be put in use in the real world. With some knowledge in CGI, the readers shall be able to easily follow these chapters. If you don't know much about CGI, the book also gives you the most essential introduction, without getting into unnecessary details. IMHO, this is also one the strength of this book.
Rating: Summary: Borish & Dated Review: I am well versed in the areas that this book covers. The style in which this book was written seems terribly close to that used in industry mfg documentation, which I find too slow and scattered. Unfortunately I purchased it when the price was considerably higher. If you are looking for that edge, this is not it. If you want redundant reference material in your library, this one will do fine.
Rating: Summary: It's the best Review: If you can write Java, you can learn to write servlets from this book. I've used it for nearly a year and it's almost worn out.
Rating: Summary: O'Reilly books are going downhill fast Review: The adage "you can't go wrong with O'Reilly" really took a hit after I picked up this dud. Don't waste your time, and pick up a copy of "Developing Java Servlets" by James Goodwill. Even the price is better!

Rating: Summary: Old news Review: I bought this book expecting it to cover the lastest Servlet specifications. Dont' waste your money, because most of the servlet material printed here is outdated.
