Summary: How about advanced topics?
Review: Technology is evolving. How can you give a book 5 stars if it does not cover Data Transformation Services, English Query and OLE DB, especially with VB6?

Summary: An extraordinarily clear and concise presentation.
Review: This is an extraordinary book. The presentation is uncommonly clear and concise. I've been doing database development with VB for a number of years and I learned something in every single chapter. The presentation on queries is the best I've ever seen. It covered what I know (or at least thought I knew) and gave me the introduction I needed to SQL Server. The author seems to just know when to present more detail. The examples are clear. The style is entertaining without being "cute". It's the first computer book that I read cover to cover in a weekend. If you do database development with VB, you should read this book!

Summary: Solved our problem...
Review: We (a small but intrepid triad of VB developers toiling inside of UNIX country) had spent THREE MONTHS trying to get an ActiveX.EXE component to work on the server. Those three months were the three months we were behind on our schedule, with impatient and increasingly skeptical (internal) customers waiting. We just didn't understand why it worked perfectly in some circumstance, not at all in others, and usually somewhere in between. We were literally at wit's end when I began perusing this book off the shelf at a local bookstore. I was looking for any book on DCOM that might actually be useful (having been through several that weren't), and when I noticed that he had a chapter with a section entitled "ActiveX EXEs Are Tools of the Devil" I knew I had finally made a step forward. The next day we had the app running distributed (the server as a .dll under MTS) and it has been stable and solid for a couple of days now.

One thing this experience has done is to make me question the "expert" status of most authors. We scoured a number of texts that talk about DCOM, but when it came right down to the details of actually getting a distributed project up and running they sort of gloss over any problems encountered. This makes me suspect they have either not actually used DCOM to distribute an app, or that they can't resolve the errors and don't want to appear ignorant or admit failure. I salute McManus for having the guts to write the truth about EXEs and DCOM. It saved us...I don't know how much. I don't think we would have lasted much longer before getting cut off (which would have been terrible since the actual code of our app worked perfectly on one machine..it was strictly a DCOM issue).

I hope he keeps the books coming. This one stands out on a shelf full of rehashes of the MSDN Library.

Summary: Jeffrey McManus does it again !
Review: I originally purchased the predecessor to this edition hinged on one passage in the entire text. No other database access reference could provide me with that crucial information. I was well justified! How about this edition covering VB6, you say? Do you appreciate technical competence? How about unparalleled clarity, numerous real-world examples, complete relevance, and an invigorating personal approach ? If these qualities for a technical reference are not on your agenda, look elsewhere. This new edition builds upon an already stellar reputation and a legendary previous work of art! In this edition, you may look forward to database access instruction in VB6 with legacy technologies, and new web-oriented methods as well! Topics include access with MS Access, SQL Server, ODBC, RDO, ADO 2.0, ASP, data-bound controls, 3-tier models, MS scripting runtime techniques, and everything else you thought or heard was possible, but never dared to try! All subjects areas are in relation to VB6, and can be easily absorbed by newbies and old hats alike. Rare is the talent that can deliver specialized knowledge in an engaging and understandable manner. Alchemists can potentially turn lead into gold. Where do you go when your gold involves elegant solutions to database access in VB? Your stop is right here...

Summary: Excellent -- unusually clear and interesting computer book.
Review: This book covers a great niche, since there are so many possible data access methods with Visual Basic, and the Knowledge Base isn't going to give you any guidance on which to use. Just as important, it is written with a clear and even witty style, which is just about unheard of in computer books.

Summary: Concise Examples from a wide range of Database topics
Review: Jeff McMannus, Database Access with VB 6. As its name says, this new book from Jeff McManus is completely focused on databaseaccess with good solid, concise, examples from getting started with MS Access to SQL Server stored procedures. You can immediately find samples of the new features like the Data Environment and Jeff even gives you the basic concepts to get started with MS SQL Server. What you get a wide range of subjects that is comprehensive. This technique doesn't present the depth you get in build a whole application style books, But I'm usually looking for that one clear example. While technical books are typically 'dry', Jeff succeeds in spicing his up with easy going humor.. As in a Q and A chapter summary use your new found powers for good.. not evil.. This is a good book for clear examples of a wide variety of database related tools. Pat Tormey PE, Editor, World Wide Developer's Network

Summary: Great Survey of Data Access in VB!
Review: This is a great book for anyone interested in working with databases from Visual Basic. I keep it next to my desk and refer to it often, it has incredible breadth. It covers everything from data design (using both Access and client/server databases) to exporting and reporting, user interface and query design. It provides an tour through all the data access technologies available in VB6, including some that aren't central to the product (such as Internet database programming, Transaction Server and third-party tools). And actually, several chapters of the book include examples in ADO, which makes me wonder whether the guy who wrote the previous review actually read the book.

Summary: The best VB 6.0 book for database developers.
Review: Jeffrey McManus's "Database Access with Visual Basic 6" book is the only book I have found that explains in detail how to work with databases.

I am a programmer by trade with thirty years of experience and have learned many languages over those years. Although I am new to Visual Basic, I know how to learn new languages. It is a fairly straight-forward process given the right reference guides.

After having purchased six complete reference guides for VB6 (from other authors), I finally came across McManus's gem. None of the other six books explained in sufficient detail how to really learn the language beyond the superficial level or how to connect to and process databases.

If you are a professional developer, this is the book for you.
