Rating: Summary: Definitive source for data access using VB6 Review: FYI, i have been developing in VB/ SQL Server/ Access for the past 2 years. This book is a great cover-all in the world of database connectivity relating to VB. J. McManus has a great writing style and the contents are precise and down to the point. I found everything to be useful and insightful. A great addition to my library.
Rating: Summary: NOT the book to buy for n-tier ADO data access information. Review: Because of the excellent quality of the other books in this Sams series, I was surprisingly disappointed with the content of this volume. The author doesn't mention ADO until the 10th chapter--rather, he advocates DAO throughout more than half of the book. If you're looking for n-tier data access advice with regard to the Microsoft DNA standard, this is not the book to buy.
Rating: Summary: Huge time-saver Review: This doesn't cover every single thing in the VB universe, just data access technologies, but those elements it covers extremely well. I went from no knowledge of VB to creating database applciations in hours wiht this book. Not only did it get me up and running quickly but it's also a great reference with lots of concise and easy to follow code examples.
Rating: Summary: Whats new in VB6?? Review: The synopsis says you will be told whats new in VB6. Forget it. This is a rehash of the VB5 book - and that was very light. Where's the info on Web Classes?! And only a smattering of ADO... come on... dont waste your time with this one
Rating: Summary: Not worth buying Review: This seems to be a 800+ page book of plugs for other books by the same author. Trying to read a particular topic involves jumping all round different chapters. ADO are barely addressed.
Rating: Summary: Terrible...... don't bother Review: If you have never seen VB before, you might gain something. Otherwise, don't waste your money. This is a tired rehash of an earlier rendition. Sorry, what could be a great topic was rendered a waste by omitting any real world examples that even the most novice programmer could use. There are many competiting books - any one would be better. With the price of books the way they are, who can afford to be burned like I was.
Rating: Summary: Awesome Reference! Review: A great, step-by-step introduction into all of the data access technologies in VB -- including ADO and OLE DB. Comes with a CD containing over 100 userful, easy-to-understand code examples. Saved me a ton of time!
Rating: Summary: Where's the beef?? Review: I agree with another reader that states that how can he NOT cover OLE DB, especially with VB6. talk about VB 5 rehashed. Save your money and read the documentation that comes with VB 6.
Rating: Summary: Would be even better if accompanied by a CD with the code Review: Every section of this book is well written. Vetran programmers will be able to access topics they haven't been exposed to while the novice programmer will find it an invaluable learning tool.
Rating: Summary: Great VB - Database info Review: Database Access With Visual Basic 6 is very informative. It is difficult to find good reading material on this issue, and Jeffrey P. McManus filled a lot of holes in what I considered to be weaknesses with VB6. This is coming from an almost exclusively Visual FoxPro developer. Thanks! Elliot Dacon - Data Concepts
