Rating: Summary: Excellent book on HP-UX covering all its aspects Review: I found this book a good resource. The book covers all hp-ux OS aspects from basics to the advanced level. I have purchased 5 books so far and recommend it to everyone pursuing hp-ux certification. This book is not only good for perparing for cert. exam but an excellent reference book to have at your work place if your environment is HP.
Rating: Summary: Average Book Review: I hate to say this , but this book just did not meet my expectation. The test questions were too easy and the method of showing the answer in Bold does not allow for for a simulated test . Even the material presented is very very brief omitting many important topics . This book cannot be used as a test prep material nor as a reference book for Sysadmin tasks . My advice is to look through the HP documentation to prepare for the exams which I eventually did.
Rating: Summary: Descriptive and not overly verbose Review: I have to say that I think that this is the best written certification text that i've ever read. Many of the others that i've encountered are either entirely too wordy or they're overly simplistic and don't provide enough detail. This one gets it just right. It's also important to note that UNIX (like Oracle) is a black hole. I mean a person could study UNIX every day for the next 20 years and still not know everything there is to know. At least that's my opinion anyway. So no book is going to cover every single aspect of a subject so broad in scope. Nor would I expect to just be able to pass the certification from studying this one text alone. But I am confident in saying that anyone who has a good foundation in Unix will find enough HP specific information in here to be be able to pass the exams.
Rating: Summary: as good as it gets Review: I just took the HP-UX exam yesterday, and used this book as one of my prep materials. The book is well written and it's very well organized. My only complaint is that there are many errors in the question/answer exercises at the end of each chapter. Overall, I was very satisfied with the book, and it definitely helped me get through the exam. I have not seen any other book out there as good as this one. My advice to anyone planning to take this exam is to also purchase some practice exams in order to get a good feel for the real test. This book is excellent for a study guide, but I would not rely on the end of chapter practice questions to get through the real exam.
Rating: Summary: This book is still relevant!! Review: I just want to mention here that this book is still relevant for HP0002-Certified Systems Administrator for HPUX. I managed to secure a pass (>70% score in all 3 sections) this week by studying for the exam using this book. I hope Mr Rafeeq Rehman will continue to write. Best wishes
Rating: Summary: Best for HP Certification seekers Review: I like this book. I teach Unix operating systems and am a Unix consultant. I use the book not only as a reference on my job but as a guide to teach my students the three required courses for HP tier 1 certification.
Rating: Summary: Passed my HP-UX certification today! Review: I passed my certification today using this book, after studying it for about 3 weeks. As several people have mentioned, there are some corrections that need to be made -- I want to include this link which goes over these corrections: http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x797787dc4d7dd5118ff00090279cd0f9,00.html You need an overall above %70 average to pass, and above %50 in each of three sections. I got a %73 overall, %90 in General Unix knowledge, %80 in sys admin, and %53 in Networking. Just made it, but, it was enough to get me the cert. I think the book was a little weak in the network area (the test really had a lot of questions that in real life you would just flip to the man pages for, like the location of a bunch of config files). Here's some additional advice, I got an hp 712/100 with HP-UX 11.00 for [price] off of [the web] (I've got mine set up off a befsr41 linksys DSL router), and use it to play around with getting ready for the cert. I did also get a surestore 5000 for [price] on [the web] to play around with cpio, tar, fbackup, etc. I've also got a Sun Blade 100 [(price)] with Solaris 8, and it came with all the Oracle 8.1.7 media, which I have installed. So, I have two Unix boxes (The sun also has a SunPCI card which will run NT, win 2000, win 98, even Linux), on a small home network. I can play with DIS, NIS, NTP, NFS, etc. I also have the platform to ultimately get Oracle certified, Solaris Certified, etc. All for about [price] including books -- much cheaper than those silly cert boot camps which churn out certified dweebs with no hands on experience. Hope this helps, Bill
Rating: Summary: good but not great Review: I read the book very carefully and found it to be helpful in general but not as in depth as the exam is. Combined with the fact that in several places he actually contradicts himself between what he says in the chapter and the answers to chapter questions...makes learning the material that much harder. In general though, for HP-UX admins and others who simply wish to broaden their horizons or as a reference manual, it is quite good.
Rating: Summary: Great book:new edition with all error corrected. Review: I was waiting for the book anxiously when it was out of stock. Found the new reprint of the book. Errors have been corrected and the book looks great. I must appreciate effort of the author to combine so many things about system and network administration into a single book. Well done!!!
Rating: Summary: This is a great book to pass certification test. Review: I would like to say that this is a great book to pass HP-UX certification exam as well as to learn HP-UX for new comers. The book is written precisely according to the objectives of the HP-UX certification exam. That is why it is the only book recommended by HP Education for preparation of the certification exam. No other book on HP-UX covers all of the areas discussed in this book. The author has presented examples for everything discussed to make the reader understand better. I like it! I am sure you will also like it once you read.
