Rating: Summary: Traumatic Brain Injury, Understand the Challenges & Changes Review: Dr. Claudia Osborn does an incredible job of relating the life altering experience of a Traumatic Brain Injury, (TBI). This is a very informative, easy to read & understand book covering the misunderstood and confusing changes and challenges an individual and their loved ones experience after a brain injury. She does so from her perspective as a professional that experiences and learns to manage permanent losses and changes which a person with TBI must learn to understand, accept, and manage. This book is a must read for brain injured persons, their family members, friends, and care providers, as well as all professionals, (Physicians, Psychologists, Counselors, Lawyers, Emergency Medical professionals, families & patients, etc.). Anyone that even potentially has any contact with a person with a brain injury will benefit from this hard to put down, easy to read & understand book. It is humorous in places but educational, enlightening & informative throughout. A TBI is too often unrecognized and misunderstood. As a medical clinician with extensive Family Medicine and Emergency Medicine experience, and myself being brain injured several years ago, I know that many brain injured persons go without adequate diagnosis or treatment. The physical and psychosocial changes that a brain injured person and their families & friends face are frequently undiagnosed, misunderstood, and improperly treated. The statistics on brain injuries are alarming. I strongly encourage laypersons and professionals alike to read this book. Thank you Dr. Osborn.
Rating: Summary: A must-read for anyone who has dealt with closed head injury Review: Having a daughter who suffered closed head injury, as well as being a friend of Dr. Osborn, I read this book with much interest. Although I am biased, I must say that this was an enthralling book on the subject of closed head injury as well as an intelligent and well written book. Thank you, Claudia, for helping me. to better understand what my daughter and friend went through.
Rating: Summary: As an 18 year veteran of rehabilitation, thanks Claudia. Review: Having lost both my physical health and ability to practice my profession, I then lost most of my psychological health. My struggle to deal with medical problems, severe limitations, and a broken sense of self has been going on for many years. Tonight as I read of Claudia's loss of her dreams and her struggle to regain the ability to function, I cried with the pain of loss, the relief of recognition and the joy of connection. Reading this book ends some of the isolation that I have felt on my own journey toward my highest level of health. As I admire Claudia's determination, courage and humor, I become more respectful of myself as I live with my fractured dreams and permanently changed self. Early in my struggle, when all I could imagine to wish for was a complete return of health, a wise person said, "you must find meaning in the struggle". In the writing of this book, Claudia has created glorious meaning out of her struggle. Thanks, Claudia, for the empathy, humor, hope, and inspiration you have given me. Reading your story of survival, grief, acceptance and new life makes me feel proud of my survival, my struggle and my still emerging "new" life.
Rating: Summary: Required reading for anyone who deals with people with BI. Review: I am a nurse who does case management on tech dependent children, so I have dealt with families and children who are post brain injury. This is a lesson in empathy for any one who works with brain injured people or their families. This book made me very excited about the potential that can be tapped by neuropsych evaluation and intervention. Thank you, Dr. Osborn for sharing so candidly.
Rating: Summary: Head Injury-As seen by a former professional Review: I am a survivor of a severe Brain Injury and former professional. After reading this book, I can see I am not alone and unique. I welcome her testimony.
Rating: Summary: Thank you very much, Claudia ... Review: I can only echo the comments of other readers who said, "Me, too." My copy is full of Post-its and underlines, so I can easily find special things again. I, too, cried when I read many parts. Melinda Quinn
Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: I finished the book and I was disappointed in Orborn's conclusion. I was hoping for some solution to TBI. I am a victim of a severe TBI and three strokes. I realize my comments are biased because of my own injury, but I got the impression Osborn's conclusion was that her TBI knocked some sense in to her. This is an unfortunate ending to what I thought all in all, was a good description of some of the problems TBI'ers face. In this respect, I think her book does harm to some victims. Now, "normals" can say, "you just have a bad attitude. Look at Osborn." I know it is much more complex than that, but the general public doesn't understand. I wish it were just a matter of changing ones attitude.
Rating: Summary: An eye opener - poignant, humorous, and educational Review: I had to put this book down frequently because I felt so frustrated for Ms. Osborn. Now I have a better understanding and empathy for BI victims and their families. This is a must read for anyone in the health field and anyone else who wants to understand the special needs of others.
Rating: Summary: Enabled me to have a useful understanding of effects of tbi. Review: I learned of this book FROM a presentation on NPR by Claudia herself ('Weekend Review' show). Being a survivor of a serious car accident myself she spoke directly to me. I am so thankful that people are finally talking about this matter (tbi). I am regularly seeking rhabilitation in my continuieng "successul/unseccessful" job path, and especially in effective enablement for being with others since my car accident. Though local support groups are very useful this is an ever-ongoing matter. Darn I thought I had "recovered", Thank you Claudia for this very personal letter to all of us who have been there.
Rating: Summary: I'd give it more stars if I could Review: I read this book for eductional purposes and found it to be the most touching and encouraging story I have ever read. I had the book read in three days; I was so curious what she was going to experience next. It is wonderfully written, with just the right about of humor and despair. This would be a great book for anyone to read. It really makes one think about the way we look at people who are "different" in this society.
