Summary: A surprising grabber
Review: Over My Head has an engaging title and interesting topic. The surprise is that it is such a can't put it down grabber. While I can see it as must read for the medical community, patients, family and friends of those suffering traumatic brain injury, it is a suspenseful and fascinating report on how one person...with a significant support group...overcomes obstacles and, despite the loss of being able to continue as an outstanding practitioner in a profession she loves, she now can reach more people. I read the excerpt in the Reader's Digest, which intrigued me, but the episode on NBC's Dateline pushed me into a buyer. In fact, I bought three copies, to have a couple to give to friends who are interested in checking on whether I'm overly enthusiastic!

Summary: A must-read for anyone suffering loss of cognition and self.
Review: Publishers Weekly, reviewed Over My Head on March 15, 1998, and said, "This is an exceptionally well written and engaging account of one woman's experiences, thoughts, feelings and relationships as she slowly navigates a terrible corner in her life and ultimately finds a new identity." This should be a must-read for tbi and medical professionals but would be valuable to anyone grieving over their loss of cognition and identity.

Summary: Very reassuring, very helpful
Review: There are many aspects of brain injury that just didn't make sense to me. I have been slowly learning from my dear friend, also a very successful and busy doctor, who survived an accident and is himself if learning how to speak and move again. Ms. Osborne allowed me to see from the inside out what some of the challenges are. Things that I had begun to guess from the outside looking in, but that she made very clear. What she also made exceptionally clear is what a wonderful NEW life a brain-injured person can lead and (most importantly) how necessary and difficult, but rewarding, it is to let the old life go. Thank you Ms. Osborne. It was comforting and very enlightening.

Summary: "Wonderful for anyone in medical field with HTR themselves
Review: This book explains the mysteries faced by all families, survivors, and professionals in trying to overcome the damage inflicted by a traumatic brain injury. TBI is different than all other mental related conditions to which the symptoms may be likened. It is a real MUST reading for anyone who knows, loves or works with someone who has or had a traumatic brain injury. Dr. Olson tells her story in a witty, yet amazingly honest and realistic manner. Exellent!

Summary: Do not miss this read!
Review: This book forgoes the technical discussion and tells it as it is. Dr Osborn addresses not just her personal Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) but how those close to her reacted. Although it is not a technical book, it provides a very good, down to earth, overview of consequences and responses to TBI. There is drama to spare and bitter sweet triumph. Dr Osborn has taken life's lemons and made lemon aide.

Summary: a must read
Review: This book is awesome. I can finally fully understand the struggles my brother goes through.....why he has changed so much etc. Written from a first person point of view I can now relate to the problems assossiated with a TBI patient doing simple tasks like brushing there teeth.

A must read for anybody that might have anything to do with a TBI.

Summary: Should Be Required Reading
Review: This book opened my eyes to a world in which personality traits and skills are stripped away. It was a riveting tale of the death and birth of two selves and I couldn't put it down. I went through the entire process of shock, denial, mourning, grieving and awakening as she led me through her recovery with skill and empathy. This book should be required reading in any human services program as it applies to stroke and Alzheimer's victims also.

Summary: "Over My Head" is beautifully written & "un-put-downable"
Review: This is a beautifully written and completely attention-grabbing book. I do not have a brain injury, but my fiance is a recreation therapist who specializes in BI rehabilitation. Despite the fact that this book addresses BI specifically and should be read by anyone who has or knows someone with a brain injury, it is also just a great book. The experiences that Claudia Osborne shares are priceless gems and can help open the eyes of all readers to the things that make others "different." Her writing is intelligent, insightful, and sensitive, and her story is fascinating.
