Rating: Summary: Conceited and badly researched, but with a saving grace Review: Franken is the ideal liberal to take on Limbaugh, the two have so much in common. Both are self-centered, consider themselves masters of wit, and take on a political opposition they stubbornly refuse to learn anything about. And now both have written books about politics that in reality are mostly books about themselves. On the whole this book is exactly as shallow and opinionated as either of Limbaugh's efforts. Franken has, however, mined terrific comedy in one chapter where he imagines several hawkish Conservatives finding themselves in the Viet Nam war. Each of these war-loving Conservatives, including Rush, in reality found a way to avoid the draft. Ollie North is their commander and the only non-coward of the group according to Franken. Isn't it strange how many liberals give a grudging nod of respect to North? Anyhow, for at least that one chapter the satire is nasty and biting and fun. Beyond that chapter, unfortunately, the book is about Franken and what a tremendous guy he thinks he is. Al tried to annoy the Reagan campaign, Al is loyal to his wife, Al was an invited guest at Renaissance Weekend and caught a football thrown by Bill Clinton while there, etc. Franken actually brags that he hasn't listened to Rush's show, tried to once, but couldn't stand it. But just like Limbaugh, Franken doesn't need a lot of facts on which to base a strong opinion, or a book.
Rating: Summary: Laugh-Out-Loud Comedy Review: This silly book had me crying me eyes out! Especially the goofy index... Oodles of fun stuff is in here... "Bob Dole's Guide to Movie-going" ... A hilarious brain teaser, where one gets to match special interest groups (for example, the Global Climate Coalition) with the appropriate corporate sponsors (a: coal and electric companies)... a crazy cut'n'pasted "conversation" with Rush himself!! And much more!! Too funny, everytime y'read it! This book is a VERY funny political satire. It is particularly (duh!) unfair to American conservatives, but that is the nature of this genre of comedy. (e.g. the eight years of Clinton-humor) ... Nevertheless, I must warn my conservative friends, notably those completely infatuated with the fascism Rush spouts daily, that this book may cause serious *trauma* for them....For those human beings with souls, this is a great buy! Lighten up! Be happy! :p Indeed, one of the funniest books I've ever read! A must for lefties!
Rating: Summary: Funny, but still socialist gobbledygook Review: Let's face it, Al Franken is funny, and he makes a few points. But overall he is a typical late 20th century Democrat, hurling personal epithets at conservatives rather than debating issues at length. I would highly recommend to any conservative who wants to attempt to understand the liberal point of view, or any socialist Democrat seeking vindication. This book simply proves that reason and personal accountability are to people like Franken what kryptonite is to Superman. Maybe he should pick up the Constitution...and discover what federal government is really allowed to do. No, wait, that would require critical thinking and an embracing of capitalism. By the way, what did Al do with the royalties from this book?
Rating: Summary: Consider the source Review: It appears that Mr.Franken is not capable of rendering any logical rational whatsoever. All that can be said about this book is summerized with the ignorant title. Al has no fact or logic to what he states, it is all subjective blatherings. But then again what can you expect from a low talent comedian, even his career as a jokester has been a complete failure!
Rating: Summary: Franken's Idea of Life Review: This is a funny and outrageous look at the life and opinions of the modern and unrespected Al Franken. The only attention that he gets is a hilarious Will Ferrell impression from Saturday Night Live. Franken is a very judmental man, but he does it in a way that means well. He looks at the characters in our modern society and evaluates them by the content of their character, just like Martin Luther King, Jr. wanted it. Franken does have some personal problems, but he does a good job at doing away with them through making them public. Nothing racist or offensive in this book, just good humor.
Rating: Summary: let's not resort to name calling Review: I suppose the way to win an arguement is to attack the opposition personally? So often liberals that can't win arguements resort to this. Stuart Smalley (Al's signiture SNL character) would have writen a better book. Not a single sentence backs his arguements. I'm willing to listen to the opposition if they have an arguement. This book doesn't. Constantly criticizing Rush's weight (which makes little sense now considering Rush is thinner than HE is now!) and spouting vulgarity about his past. Praising homosexuality and CHOICE of immorality....Christians-don't even touch this book. It's even an insult to LIBERALS considering it gives another example of name calling, WHINING (good grief-the whining!), and extreme socialist beliefs.
Rating: Summary: Simply hysterical from beginning to end..... Review: This book is a complete riot. If you are a Rush Limbaugh fan, it's not for you, but for those who have a nose for making fun of politics and its guru's, especially Limbaugh, this book is a scream. Franken's chart of Limbaugh's progessive weight gain left me in stitches. The inside story on Limbaugh's pathetic TV show was even more hilarious. This is the funniest book I've ever read and highly recommend it!!!
Rating: Summary: Yes, he is Review: Read it, laugh, and then wonder why America allows such imbeciles to rise to the top of their field. Well, what can we say, have a look at who is president now!! But, in truth, America does provide the opportunity for essential critical debate, even in this comical format. We might laugh at Big Rush (and I think we should), but at least there is an opportunity to print the other side of his outrageous stories. As a group of essays, dip in and laugh, learn and enjoy.
Rating: Summary: Want To Upset Your Conservative Friends? Review: Then buy this book. Franken provides a vicious humorous attack on that most famous of conservative radio pundits, with a definite leftist slant. The book does not provide a laugh on every page, but the satire is definitely biting. The most fun you'll have with it is telling all your conservative friends you have read it, nothing irritates them more! I have to admit, I can't see why, they seem to regard it as some sort of didactic statement of Liberal principles, or a serious attack on Limbaugh's credibility, but really it is neither (although Franken does reveal some unsurprising hypocrisy about ole Rush). It is simply a book of political humor, and a funny one. I give it an extra star for driving Republicans crazy. And remember, the eighties were the Al Franken decade.
Rating: Summary: Hilarious! Review: ANy DEmocrat or liberal will love this book. NOt only is it outrageously funny it's is also somewhat informative. I loved almost all of this book, although some parts got a little repetative and dragged, such as "My conversation with Rush Limbaugh" and the part where his assistant Jeff talked. But overall this is a great book. I especially enjoyed the last part about Pat Robertson.
