Rating: Summary: Insults Typical of Liberals Review: I read the book and it'd not only inaccurate, but childish. I think it's funny that many Democrats are usually intolerant, first to call people names, label people, and use racism for their own convenience (ahem, Jesse "The Reverend" Jackson). Democrats normally break their own rules, which makes them.... Democrats. Republicans as well, but I have not seen as hateful writing from Republicans. Anyway, I tried to read this book with an open mind, but even the title resorts to name-calling. Quite frankly, no pun intended, Al Franken only makes Democrats sound even more idiotic (if that was possible). Limbaugh is an overall joke, but Franken is even more of a joke. This book is not funny, presents no real solutions to problems, and really focuses on Rush Limbaugh... a tribute, actually. Limbaugh simply focuses on issues whereas this book is typical liberalism: whining, name-calling, lack of information, and no tangible solutions. A joke; thankfully I got it from the library and did not buy it.
Rating: Summary: Laugh out loud funny Review: Rush Limbaugh has always been a laughable buffoon, but Al Franken was the first to capitalize on this fact. And he does a fabulous job! The index alone is hysterically funny. Up until the publication of this book, major US news organizations took Limbaugh seriously. Al Franken did us all a great service by writing this book.
Rating: Summary: Fought Over It With My Brother and Won Review: My brother and I inherited this book from my Dad's varied library and after an insignificant struggle, I won the pleasure of being the first to read Al Franken, cover to cover. I couldn't put the darned thing down. I got so desperate that during my daily dose of HARDBALL, I was sneaking in chapters during commercial breaks, and during any and all commentary by Terry Jeffery. Many of Franken's jokes and opinions were clever and on point, and I truly enjoyed his "Adventures In Politics" for its (although angled) insight into the lives and events of our elitist politicos. Perhaps it has something to do with my liberal intentions, or maybe I'm just a sucker for political humor, either way, I was laughing out loud.
Rating: Summary: Funny and accurate Review: You would think it would be difficult to write a book that is so accurate about our culture and also so funny - but Franken makes it seem very easy. He consistently hits the mark in this book...if you don't believe me, just look below and see how many of the very people Franken is poking fun of in his book that have come here to write negative reviews. They don't like it because it is about them and it hits too close to home. Ditto.
Rating: Summary: yeah, so what ? Review: Yeah, so what? What does his weight or his IQ have to do with anything? Here's the real question : Rush Limbaugh is such an easy object of satire; how did Al Franken manage to swing and miss ? If you've ever listened to Rush's radio show, you know how bombastic and braggadocios he is; he seems to be making fun of himself half of the time. In fact if you've ever heard the Rush parody on Imus in the Morning, the real show isn't much different. He's completely over the top, tries to stir up controversy, takes on every hot button issue, and talks for three hours a day. Over the years he must have said thousands of things that you could pick apart and make look stupid. But all Franken has to offer is a few such examples and some personal invective about his weight, personal history and multiple marriages. The book is neither funny nor a response to Rush's ideology. If Franken actually had anything to say, he might have taken Rush down a few pegs. Instead he got the only response this book really deserved, a book called Al Franken is a Buck-Toothed Moron by JP Mauro. When you go for the easy shot and don't dig any deeper, you leave yourself vulnerable to like retaliation. GRADE : F
Rating: Summary: Wow - a really mean book Review: Hmmm, where do I begin. I guess the title just about says it. I remember seeing Al Franken on the old SNL, he seemed like a happy, normal guy. Unfortunately he must have changed since then. He's not happy or funny, more often just very mean and nasty. I can't believe I read this book looking to get a laugh. Extremely disappointed. I think the idiot anyone who buys this book. Don't do it!
Rating: Summary: A funny, funny book! Review: This book is hysterical, and is a delight to read, particularly in the context of this close election season. I thought it was particularly gratifying to witness Al Franken turning Rush windbag's own brand of humor on him--funnier still to see/hear conservatives crying "foul"!
Rating: Summary: Read This Review: This book proves Al Franken to be one of the most effective and humorous political satirists of our century. As intelligent and witty as this book is, it can be incredibly vulgar, but that tends to make it all the more enjoyable. Sarcasm abounds, almost too much to stand, so read with discretion, if only to save your own feelings.
Rating: Summary: Very funny and honest, but extreme at times Review: I am English, and picking up a random satirical political book from the shelf seemed like a good idea for learning a bit about American politics. And having a good time. I didn't like the title, because it is somewhat...confrontational. But between the covers of this aggressive book lay a very, very funny man. He combines an astute political sense with a level of indignant humanitarianism which allows him to put radical conservatives in a very bad light. Franken uses stats and figures to support his claims, but never attempts to pretend his book is any more than satire - slightly less political than P.J. O'Rourke, for example. Radical conservatives might struggle to enjoy this, but anyone with a sense of humour should be able to appreciate most of Franken's character portraits and, even better, anecdotes - for example, when he played with the President American football and made a play which won his team the game...but the President forbore to congratulate him. The quick prose is funny and witty... But...it does go a little far at times, and though I learned to share some of Franken's views on Rush Limbaugh, to whom I have never listened, I still thought some of the writing went too far. It reassured me tremendously to read in Franken's "Why Not Me" that Limbaugh himself had bumped into him and instead of pummelling him had yelled - "hell of a book!". This, and grudging praise to men such as Bob Dole gives Franken a bit more depth than an out-and-out liberal satirist with no punches pulled.
Rating: Summary: Unless You're a Left-Wing Extremist, Don't Waste Your Time Review: If you read it thinking maybe this time Franken will be funny, you'll be disappointed. If you read it thinking Franken will give some new political or media insight, you'll be disappointed. If you want to join the bandwagon of angry left-wing mud-slinging, you will not be disappointed. Franken used to perform a boring little segment on SNL in which he spoke to himself in the mirror. He repeatedly self-affirmed his superior self-worth. I think perhaps he is the character and has expanded his philosophy to include the repeated process of tearing all those around him that differ in philosophy. More's the shame for him. We do not truly elevate ourselves by insulting others. There is always room for political differences and even humorous commentary on those differences. But there is never a call for mean-spirited slander. Reader, rise above the hate and do not bother wasting your time on this book.
