Rating: Summary: An old Holiday friend returns Review: The Rankin/Bass animagic Holiday specials are as much a part of my childhood memories as putting up the tree, hanging the stockings and painting the eggs. It is nice to see Rick Goldschmidt drag them from the foggy haze of my nostalgia and bring them back into the light. I never new that there was so much information on Arthur Rankin and Jules Bass. "The Enchanted World of Rankin/Bass" has it all, from the most obscure cel animated cartoon to the classic animagic of Rudolph and Santa. Everything you could want is here: Behind the scenes photographs, a complete list of Rankin/Bass works, well-written articles and a jumble of Rankin/Bass memorabilia. This book is even more relevant, now that the Rankin/Bass filmography is being released on DVD. It will make you chomp at the bit for each new release. If Peter Cottontail, The Snow Miser and Heat Miser, Frosty the Snowman and Happy the Christmas Baby ("those ears!") ring any bells for you, then you will enjoy "The Enchanted World of Rankin/Bass."
Rating: Summary: Great photos, terrible text Review: This book is a great concept; unfortunately it was not executed well. The design is crowded and jumpy. The text desperately needs a copyeditor. DESPERATELY. The whole thing lacks professionalism. The author is a fan, yes, but he should've worked with someone on this who knows what they're doing. Lots of unnecessary repetition and unclarified information. And whatever happened to those puppets? He never tells. Very little text about how the specials were actually filmed in their "Animagic" technique. How were the puppets made? By whom? What size were they? How were they worked? Lots and lots of questions left in readers' minds. Poor job. But--we're stuck with it. The attempt is nice, but it needs lots of work.

Rating: Summary: Well done! Review: This is a very well researched book. In response to "a reader in New Orleans"; this book is not a how-to in animation. It's titled "A Portfolio" for a reason. Go to RankinBass.com and you'll learn that all the behind the scene photos available were used and the puppets don't exist anymore because they were only intended for the filming. These days we're so materialistic that everything is an instant collectable. It is quite a tribute to Rankin/Bass to have generated this much interest in these classics. Hopefully they will continue to inspire quality in storytelling and filmmaking. It's hard to believe Rankin/Bass has gone ignored for all these years. Thanks to Rick Goldschmidt for his incredible effort!
Rating: Summary: FANTABULOUS BOOK!! Review: This is one of my favorite books, EVER! When I found out that this book existed, it was a happy day! Born in 1970, I grew up watching all of these shows and they became a huge part of my life. Even having read the book, I still get it out every Christmas to re-read about the shows as I watch them. There are more illustrations in here than I could possibly take the time to count! My four year old loves to look at it, too. This book can even help you identify some of the specials you only have a vague remembrance of - it's all here! If you, like me, find yourself singing the "Heat-miser/Snow-miser song" in the middle of the summer, than buy this book today!!
Rating: Summary: Relive Your Chilhood!!! Review: This is the greatest tribute I have ever seen!! The Enchanted World of Rankin/Bass by Rick Goldschmidt was over a eight year effort, and may I say well worth it. Each project perfectly documented including production stills, rare photos, concept drawings, and fan memorabilia. There's Loads of interviews with Arthur Rankin, Jr., Jules Bass, actors, as well as animators and artists who worked on the shows. If that's not enough for you, then maybe 16 pages of color stills and over 400 photos will fill your belly. Covering over 20 years of television series, specials, theatrical releases, not to mention live action movies, this is a must have for any Rankin/Bass fan!
