Summary: The biting sarcasm of MST3K ably transported to paper
Review: Fairly witty observations; I laughed out loud on numerous occassions. Among the gems:

" 'Batman & Robin'...[is] not the worst movie ever. No, indeed. It's the worse THING ever. Yes, it's the single worst thing that we as human beings have ever produced in recorded history...Yes, 'Batman & Robin' boldly carried on the legacy of shame that began in 1989 with Tim Burton's masterfully unwatchable 'Batman'."

" 'Batman Returns' (1992), for my money, runs neck and neck with 'Batman & Robin' for utter loathsomeness. Danny DeVito, I think we can all agree, is the enemy of everything good and decent in this world, and 'Batman Returns' is simply chock-full of the freakish little golem."

And this was all just on a page I opened to at random. If you like smart-aleck reviews delivered in a tongue-in-cheek tone, this book's for you.

Summary: Over and Over and Over again....
Review: I LOVE this book. Let me get this into your head, I LOVE THIS BOOK! Mike is hilarious. Those of us "MST3K" fans will immediately read this book and picture Mike with "the bots" reading these reviews. They are hilarious.
Where else can you get a 1 paragraph review of a movie and another 3 pages of BS and still feel like you have gained something?
Most of the movies, TV shows and people mentioned in this book...well.....they SUCK!!
But hey, tell us something we didn't know! Mike tells us why these things suck in words that all of us college graduates can enjoy. All of us who have spent WAY too many semester hours on useless courses but we ALL remember them!
Thank God for Mike J. Nelson, else 4 of my 7 years at NC State would have been wasted!
You will find yourself laughing at things that you shouldn't even understand. But you DO! The references are fresh and apt. You laugh and yet simultaneously realize that no NORMAL person would be laughing at this. And then you read the review again and STILL end up with tears in your eyes. (Tears of JOY, I might add!)
Anyone who knows what MST3K means, should read this book. And Anyone who feels far above the rabble of today and yesterday, who rues the fools who call the shots. THIS book is for you.
Just try not to read it in a Dr's office as I recently did while awaiting my wife's GYN-OB appt. I got some frigid looks in the waiting room as I guffawed while reading this book.
Other than that, enjoy it as you will!

Summary: I LOVE MST3K
Review: And this book was pretty good too, though a bit much at times. Mike can lay the sarcasm on a trifle TOO thick in some places. Other than that, it's just as irreverent, biting and humorous as the show, though I reccomend it in small, easily managed doses.

Thank you and I bid you peace.

Summary: Nelson's first, and best, book
Review: As a huge fan of MST3K, I was very excited to hear that headwriter Mike Nelson was going to start writing books after the long-running show was cancelled. However, I was also a bit apprehensive, because it is hard to gauge just how much, and what types of jokes he contributed to the show. Would his book show that he was the driving force behind MST, or just a passenger? I think what he has accomplished with Movie Megacheese very clearly states that Mike Nelson was a huge contributor to the show.

This book is basically a series of essays that summarize and poke fun at a bunch of recently released movies, legends of film and famous film families. It is easy to tell right from the start that you are not going to stop laughing throughout this entire book. I don't want to give away any of his hilarious one-liners and jokes, so I won't go into detail, but rest assured, if you like the show, you will love this book.

Some have said that Nelson's humor loses something when being converted from screen to book form, but I didn't detect that at all. Even when Nelson is making fun of good movies, or great actors, the jokes still work perfectly.

I highly recommend this book. This one is slightly better than his more recent book, Mind Over Matters, but both are very entertaining.

Summary: Good, but not quite as good as Mind Over Matters
Review: Written by MST3k alum Mike Nelson, this is a book reviewing, of all things, bad movies. While this is hardly virgin territory for Nelson and his readers, it's a good read, except when he rips on Jason Lee. No one should do that.

Summary: Continuing a fine tradition
Review: I have to admit it took me a few essays before I really got into the swing of this book. At first, it seemed like Mike was just trying too hard. The laugh-every-ten-seconds or so pace we got used to with MST3K is easier to sustain when a team of writers is working together. It's much harder to do solo, and in print. I was a little disappointed.

But then, about four essays in, something clicked for me. Maybe it was Mike's revelation of the 'glaring flaw' in Action Jackson (p. 38). Certainly, by the time he deconstructed the digital-snake flick 'Anaconda' ('He was saved from having to give breath to much of the script, which is more an assemblage of random words than an actual script ... It all makes for a special kind of tedium that would be impossible with a traditional, more "written" script.' [p.72-73]), I was hoppin' on the bandwagon.

Maybe my problem was I went into this expecting a Kael-esque collection of movie reviews, instead of the kind of good-natured but dead-on mockery I came to love as a true-blue MSTie. Once I shifted into MST-mode, everything was just fine. I even re-read the essays I didn't quite get the first time, and darn it, they were funny too.

That's not to say Mike's not a great movie reviewer. He is. His ability to make telling comparisons and draw devastating analogies is really admirable. Plus, he has unmasked Adam Sandler, Keanu Reeves, and Carrot Top as the threats to human civilization that they truly are, and for this he deserves our thanks.

I'm sorry I doubted you, buddy. This book is not only insightful, but also very, very funny (Mike's dismemberment of Streisand's awful 'The Mirror has Two Faces' is brilliant). Any MST3K fan will love this.

Summary: A legend stumbles
Review: As head writer of the cult classic MST3K, Michael Nelson oversaw much of the unique, creative humor that defined MST3K. I purchased the "Megacheese" book figuring I'd find a pretty funny book. Unfortunately, this book is quite tedious. I think I laughed out loud about 3 times. I admit I'm hampered by a poor vocabluary, so reading his book with a dictionary alongside made it a difficult read at times. My guess is if Nelson covered more topics than movies, then the format of the book would work. Nelson comes across as a very bitter person who hates everything, instead of the witty man he really is(I suppose). So, if you want a book with a lot of rarely used words, a lot of humor that makes you think "Hey, that is funny", but not laugh, then buy this book. The best thing that has come out of this experience is that I want to read (and buy) his other book that just came out. If I don't like THAT book, I still have my tapes of MST3K to watch.

Summary: Mike Nelson is God
Review: First off, to the reviewer who said Mike's world was Hollywood, Mr. Nelson actually lives in Minnesota.

Now, on to the book. I adore Mike. I love Mike. I have the biggest crush on Mike-and this book just confirmed it! (Boy, Bridget is one lucky woman!) The book was hysterical. My favorite comment: "If you are, then, a narcoleptic, alcoholic seven-year-old, I can heartily recommend the Batman series entire!"
His comments were dead on for most of the movies he reviews. He manages to be sarcastic without coming off as nasty and bitter-not an easy task.
I miss MST3K, and this book totally filled my cravings and then some for Mike Nelson! I can't wait until his next book comes out! I'd love to see Mr. Nelson take on some of the classics of Hollywood!
