Summary: Very funny book
Review: This is an invaluable resource for anyone who loves to hate bad movies or is a fan of bad movies. Mike Nelson is a very good writer and doesn't pull any punches. I don't always agree with his assessments, but, hey, it's a free country.

Summary: Funny as Hell
Review: The cover of this book contains a blurb from Leonard Maltin stating that Mike Nelson could "put some legitimate movie critics out of business." Having read this tome(about 6,000,000 times, to be accurate), I'd say that Mr. Nelson IS a legitimate film critic, having mastered the art of the genuinely devastating put-down, the only serious competition to Stanley Kauffmann at THE NEW REPUBLIC I can think of. (Nelson's description of Jim Carrey as a "mephitic harlequin" is almost as good as Kauffmann's remark that Carrey's success has caused him to worry a little less about the continued survival of the human race.)

And then there are the moments when Nelson launches himself into the ether and turns head-stands, such as his riff on the titles of made-for-TV exploitation movies that tend to star Aaron Spelling contract players on summer haiatus ("Reluctant Centerfold: Nude Without Permission," "Savage Panties: The Story of The Victoria's Secret Killer," and of course "Not Without My Swimsuit"), or his observation about how difficult it must be for action-movie supervillians to track down large squads of people to assist them in their doomed-to-failure attempts at large-scale mayhem, mayhem which is almost always foiled by one foul-mouthed muscle-y guy in a ripped t-shirt. And his mocking of all of the technical goodies afforded by DVD's ("Now Skeet Ulrich's rich, sonorous voice can be spread out over five channels of audio")is a nice slap at us technophiles who just weren't satisfied with out VCR's and laser disc players (And who could be? I mean, is ANY home theater complete without all three?). And there is also his amusing defense of liking the Three Stooges, who may have twisted each other's noses with pliars, but never popped the eyes out of anyone's head in a vise. As he observed, "the moral victory goes not to the wiseguys but 'Oh, Wiseguy?'"

I couldn't have put it any better myself.

Summary: It has got to be good
Review: I haven't read it because I had no idea it existed until today, but since it was written by the Head Writer for the best show in the history of mankind, it has got to be GREAT.

Summary: Delicious! Tastier than a strip of Walloon butt-steak!
Review: As a hopeless MST3K addict (and as you can imagine, I've been going through tough times since summer '99), I was drooling waiting for this book to come out. The only possible choice for bathroom reading, Mike Nelson more than delivers on the promise of his writing skill from the show. The big difference here is that he leaves off shredding '50s-'80s Z-grade fare such as the legendary Mexican kids' film "Santa Claus" ("Hey, Santa, I need more 'stuff', man; just a taste, man...") and turns to some of the more popular movies and stars of the past decade. Not entirely merciless, Mike manages to find a soft spot in his heart for meat-and-potatoes heroes and villains such as Kurt Russell and Ray Wise (Laura Palmer's dad from "Twin Peaks" and apparently the best reason to have watched the now-defunct Aaron Spelling soap opera "Savannah").

Fortunately for cynics, he turns into Genghis Khan when it comes to the bright lights of the present day, such as Jean-Claude Van Damme and Carrot Top (and notes the irony in "Chairman of the Board" when Carrot Top trapshoots John Tesh CDs from his apartment window). To mention any more specifics would really be unforgivably giving it away. I can say that one of the funniest themes of the book is Mike's developing love/hate relationship with DVD technology, with which I have yet to become intimate. Such features manage to make this book transcend its movie review origins and become more of a biting comment on entertainment and society. MSTies will totally love it (just imagine Servo delivering some of the choicer barbs) and the initiated should respond well to Mike's common-sense analyses of individuals like Kevin Sorbo. Be sure and keep your eyes peeled, though, for highlights such as (probably my favorite part) Mike's theory as to the REAL reason Jonathan Harris didn't receive a cameo role in the feature film version of "Lost in Space." People, this book is being sold at one-FIFTH its price (if even that). Take advantage!!

Summary: Funniest book I've read in years!
Review: Mike Nelson is one of the best writers in the world of movie critics. He begins some entries seemingly off-course, but ties them up soon, making me laugh out loud along the way. He takes off on some of the absolute worst movies ever made, and notices things in these films that you probably didn't. I really hope he writes more books.

Summary: Loved it!
Review: Man this book makes me misty eyed for MST3K Mike Nelson's humor comes shining through in this book and should make any fan of the show happy. There is just something refreshing when you find someone else has the same satrical opinion of today's mass produced movies. I hope this is an ongoing series of books. His take on Jean Claude VanDamme is hilarious!

Summary: Extremely entertaining, well worth your cash
Review: Mike Nelson's first compilation of reviews showcases the wonderful wit and gentle sarcasm that made him a success on "Mystery Science Theater 3000," first as a writer, then as the star of the show. For what he wrote about Jean Claude Van-Damme alone, I could nominate him for a Pulitzer, but I'll try to contain my euphoria and simply plead with him to PLEASE write a sequel. Anyone who's seen MST3K knows Nelson to be a culture junkie (how could he know enough about film to write the lines he did for MST unless he loved good movies?) and can see his love for real art as the motivation for his sniping about those cheesy Hollywood Blockbusters. And given his gift for humor, he seems better suited blasting bad movies and performances instead of raving about the good ones. Definitely well worth the cash - a must-have for any true movie lover.

Summary: Mike Nelson is the funniest human on the planet. Period.
Review: After years of watching, taping, and re-watching episode after episode of MST 3K, I was willing to concede that Mike might be the funniest man in America. But there could have been a funnier guy somewhere in The Country Formerly Known as Russia (Yakov Smirnov not withstanding) & I had just never heard of him (or her). Then I read Mike Nelson's Movie Megacheese. It is the funniest book that I have ever read. Mike is dead-on with his bitingly funny reviews of some big but crappy movies & a few lesser known gems. READ THIS BOOK!!!

Summary: Perfection
Review: Absolute perfection. This is not just a book of reviews, but a hilarious commentary on the sad state of society itself. Nelson's observations are dead-on. If you find yourself offended by this book, then it's time for a good soul cleansing.

Summary: Mike, keep pumping these books!!!
Review: This was a funny book that I could not put down. It is a quick read but you will find yourself re-reading certain passages that will leave you snorting and chortling with glee. Mike, we need you to keep pumping out more books!!
