Summary: Endless gushing sarcasm... for better or worse
Review: Mike's take on life, himself, the world he lives in, hollywood and hollywood folk is steeped in sarcasm. His scholastic (if pedantic) wit is a piece of the comedy that makes MST3K so enjoyable. Unfortunately, without the lighter humor of his 3K cohorts, I found Megacheese somewhat heavy...

Every essay is an "xyz movie/actor is a loser" sort of bashing mixed with a touch of self deprecation (which reads a bit like Eyore doing stand-up comedy.)

In small bites, say - two or three essays, the analyses are a laughless, clever sort of funny. After a few sittings, however, I found myself not wanting to pick the book up again. (Ever have one of those friends who's kinda funny - kinda cool but such a downer that you find yourself not picking up the phone when their name pops up on the caller-id?)

I'm afraid I fell out of the demographic for this venture... For the positives: it is well written, the essays are complete thoughts geared for those with short attention spans (most are less than 3 pages) and the unabashed bashing is executed masterfully as always. I just can't get by the dark cloud this book carries around.

Summary: Absolutely Hilarious!
Review: This is one of the funniest movie books I've read, forget that, it's one of the damn funniest things I've looked at this year! Mike Nelson's Megacheese will be a hit with Mysties (as if that were a doubt), with people who love movies, and with anyone who is in desperate need of a laugh! Nelson is ruthless with modern film, taking on everything from films, to actors (especially families such as the Baldwins or the Wayans), to the little screen. His prose is cutting, his wit superb, and as always it is one crazy read. Pick it up today!

Summary: I miss MST3K!!!
Review: Wonderful! I laughed so hard I cried. A much-needed dose of Michael J. Nelson's brand of humor. I hope a sequel's in the works, as I'd love to see one of the geniuses behind Mystery Science Theater take on "Titanic," "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace," "Battlefield Earth" and other recent films.

Summary: Perfect For Bathroom Reading
Review: And I mean that in the best possible way. Nelson's insightful and extremely funny movie reviews and opinion pieces are usually under 4 or 5 pages which is just right for the duration of a bathroom visit. Great book!

Summary: Funniest (Jean-Claude van) Damme Book I Have Read
Review: Leonard Maltin state in his cover quote that Mike Neslon might put legitimate Film Critics out of work. This book should make that staement fact. Mike (Micheal J.) Nelson has written a peice of work that keeps you turning the pages to find more of his hilarious takes om some of the admitedly worst films (or best if you subscribe to the Road Housian Standard) in contemporary cinema. Some of the folks who make, produce and star in the visual drivel he reviews are roundly taken to taks for their pitiful and pitiable work. So I say from the bottom of my heart read this book. You will laugh, you will cry, and you will be moved.

Thank you Mike.

P.S. When is your next book due out?

Summary: Boy, this guy sure THINKS he's funny!
Review: This was quite possibly the worst book I've ALMOST read in a long time. As a fan of MST3K, I really had high hopes for Nelson's book, and why not? The head writer and later host of a really funny show writes a book of reviews of cheesy movies - sounds really promising, doesn't it? Unfortunately, it doesn't deliver.

Nelson's book is written in a highly personal style - annoyingly so. We get to hear about his wife, his kids, his house, ad nauseum. The talent for repartee evidenced on his show is absent from his prose, and the jokes consist of abstract remarks that are neither humorous nor creative. The overall tone is that of a man who finds HIMSELF incredibly funny, and who cares what you think?

I managed to wade through about the first 30 pages of this stinker before I threw it down in disgust. If you're really dying to try it, please search for it on Half.com, where my copy is currently for sale.

Summary: I love it already!
Review: The only movie reviews of Mike's I've read were in Home Theater magazine while I was standing in the drugstore. This was right after the tv show ended. I must say they were HILARIOUS, but I wasn't surprised. He's a great writer and has a fabulous way with words. I recommend you buy all of Mike's books. You will NOT be disappointed! I would read it myself, but it'd take too long while I was standing in the bookstore.

Summary: Honest criticism
Review: Having enjoyed his razor sharp wit on Mystery Science Theater, I jumped at the chance to read Michael's collection of reviews. I highly recommend that film students everywhere read this book as if it were gospel and help put an end to the lousy shlock that is oozing out of the bloated fatcat that Hollywood has become.
Cheers to you Mike.
You make the world of film a better place.

Summary: Mike Nelson watches bad movies so you don't have to
Review: I will admit that I had doubts about MIKE NELSON'S MOVIE MEGACHEESE when I first learned of it. MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000 was one of the funniest shows on the air, and, as head writer, Mike Nelson was probably one of the most influential people working for the show. What I worried about was whether the jokes and jeers that he had made over the years would work in review form where we don't have the sheer awfulness of the film to look at. I am glad to say that all of my fears were greatly unfounded. This book is hilarious and scores a solid bull's-eye for every target that it takes aim at.

While the television series was stuck with only making fun of low-budget howlers that no one had heard of, here Nelson is free to mock any movie or celebrity he feels like. He certainly doesn't pull any punches; Bruce Willis, Adam Sandler, MIGHTY JOE YOUNG, THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY and other worthy contenders are all mercilessly heckled here in a way that should be very familiar to any fan of MST3k. The jokes come fast and furious and, just like the show, if you don't pay attention, a lot of funny material will pass you by.

The book is vaguely organized into five sections, and consists of scores of short essays and reviews on current films and celebrities. No offering lasts for more than four pages, so if there's something in there you don't like (if you have a fanatical devotion to EVENT HORIZON or Carrot Top) then you don't have very far to read until the next selection. These short bursts prevent the book from falling into dull repetition; there are not really too many things that one can say about WHAT DREAMS MAY COME so the book never feels like it's outstaying it's welcome -- quick joke and then onto the next film. Who would have thought that Sex Pistols songs and movie reviews would have so much in common?

In any case, this book comes with the highest of recommendations. Even if he blasts one of your favourite films or actors, you still won't be able to resist laughing. And if the above wasn't recommendation enough, there's a killingly funny photograph on the back inside cover of Mr. Nelson in a smoking jacket, holding a pipe and wearing the most pretentious expression you'll ever see on a man who spoke to puppets for five years. Own it.

Summary: A great book for those who miss MST3K
Review: Mike Nelson's sense of humor and writing style are right in line with the jokes made while watching those terrible movies in Mystery Science Theater 3000. Those of us who miss MST3K will especially enjoy this book, as it has many of the elements of a good MSTie. If you've never seen MST3K, this book still "delivers the goods" by being funny and insightful.

Ready and enjoy!
