Rating: Summary: One great,Raw thrash metal album I must say. Review: Usually I don't review cds unless I have had them for a peroid of time, but this is probably one of metallicas best albums to date, second to master of puppets. This is raw, real, the way thrash metal should be.There are some really notible songs on here that will, have withstanded the test of time. You have songs like one,...and justice for all that really show the musician ship of metallica, and kirk hammet is one hell of a guitar player. And so is james. then you get into harvester of sorrow and live is to die. so if you want a raw, uncut thrash metal album, by all means get ...and justice for all.
Rating: Summary: Something's missing Review: Actually, this is one of the poorest Metallica's albums after "Kill 'Em All". There are some beautiful tunes, but sophisticated people will not like the sound, musicians will not like James Hetfield's singing. This album produced the hit "Harvester Of Sorrow" which is the only song that's worth listening. The ballad "One" is nothing further than a sequence of "Fade To Black" and "Welcome Home": it is built on the same model, sounds very trivial, and shows their influence by Iron Maiden's "Remember Tomorrow" that first set exactly the same model. It is the last ballad of this type that Metallica created. Speaking of sound, I feel like this is a demo album, there's no background, as if they play in a basement. Compared to the sound of the previous two albums, "Ride The Lightning" and "Master Of Puppets", it is vague. However, instrumental parts are performed nicely.
Rating: Summary: highly inventive music of manic intensity Review: It's been almost 20 years since I've listened intensively to rock music; consequently, there is a two-decade gap in my knowledge and experience of the bands and various trends that have gone by in the age of music videos. In fact, until a week ago I had never heard Metallica at all ( I had heard OF them but hadn't recognized their music as such ). So, diehard fans of the band ought to understand this is a review from an ultra-neophyte in matters Metallica. At the urging of my cousin, I gave "And Justice for All" a listen and was floored. This is music of phenomenal energy and considerable complexity; the rhythm section's "stop and start" syncopation, lengthy tunes, shifting tempos and moods, the crazy and inventive guitar riffs, the intelligent ( if angry ) lyrics; I've got to tip my hat to the band- this is highly original music of an almost manic intensity ( energy that is nonetheless tightly controlled through musicianship ). All of the 9 songs are interesting, not a dud in the bunch. I consider this work in the same category as Led Zeppelin's "Presence" in terms of a high quality hard rock album. Having given "And Justice for All" about half a dozen enthusiastic listenings over a 5 day period, I eagerly sought out another Metallica album. This time I bought the "black" album released in 1991. I've listened to this album all the way through and I'm having a very hard time believing this is the same band that cut "And Justice for All". I find the "black" album to be a highly over-produced affair ( very irritating drum reverb ), abounding in monotonous medium tempo grooves ( the polar opposite of the creative complexity of their 1988 album ) and to top it off, more cliché ridden songs; quite a disappointment. If this had been the first Metallica album I had heard it is highly unlikely I would have ever given them another listen. I don't know when I'll buy another Metallica album, but based on recent investigation my aesthetic preference is firmly for the albums released in the 1980's.
Rating: Summary: Metallica's magnum opus, before they went down the drain Review: I personally consider this Metallica's best cd. Metallica once again takes the progressive element to their music a step further, crafting oddly timed riffs that still manage to flow perfectly. A worthy thrash album, even by modern standards....
Rating: Summary: My favorite Metallica ALbum Review: After the incident with Cliff Burton former bassist, they recruited solid bassist Jason Newsted who in my opinion as a percussionist myself matches CLiff Burton up to the bitter end, even for a pick player. However Hetfield and Lars have never been too fond of Jason, they needed a bass player just to get on stage, do his job to make them look good, and get his check at the end of the month. Which can all be good for awhile, but not for long at all. This is one main reason why Newsted left was because they would never let him hardly write his own material, or even get to have people listen to his killer bass riffs throughout the whole songs. Thats one reason why metallica would always have bass solos live, so that their bassists could get a moment of enjoyment with playing. Metallica never did have good bass recordings throughout their entire songs, especially live. I have a killer sound system and cranked the bass up to full throttle, the only bass in there is Lars's double bass, which is ok and all, but its missing the bass guitar as well. Still minus the bass, there are some very good songs on here. Blackened-Nice intro, odd lyrics about the end of the world having to do with evolution. Hetfield gives a nice touch with his vocals. An Justice for all..-Excellent opening, excellent political lyrics, and a nice solo by Hammet. Eye of the Beholder-Excellent name for a song, but I cant get into this song at all. Its too slow and way too repeative. The chorus is catchy though. One-Of course a great song, lyrics are a bit awkward but it is still deep. Hetfield is playing the opening bass on here with his guitar, while Jason should be doing it himself. It wouldve sounded so much better. Talent wise, this is Kirk's best guitar solo off the album, and lars does nail the drums nicely. The shortest Straw-fast paced song, interesting lyrics. A fun headbanging tune to listen too. Harvester of Sorrow-Excellent,heavily distorted song, however when the touch of melody comes in place, hetfield is playing the bass again with his guitar, that should be another spot for Jason. Dull lyrics, but killer chorus. (Anger, misery , you'll suffer unto me?) Frayed ends of sanity-nice song about a schizo, fast and heavy. The opening intro of the chanting which originally took place in the wizard of oz movie is hilarious. To live is to die-My opinion, this is the best song off here. The spanish guitar flows nicely for an intro and an outro. The mid melody is simply outstanding, nice distortion from Hetfield, still no bass guitar added. Yet it is still an awesome song, I hope to cover this song, and add some more bass work on it. Dyer's Eve-Angry, aggressive song. Hetfield screams his lungs out, and you can almost feel his pain for these lyrics about ungreatful parents. Hammet delivers another nice solo to close this album off. After this album, I couldnt ever get back into metallica, it did have its moments I guess in the 90's and now, but still doesnt cut it for me. This album is really good though, its a very easy album really, not complex at all. If it had better bass work on it, I wouldve given it five stars, and no it did not have any good bass work on it at all, really listen to it and see for yourself, its true. Lars delivers the goods, hetfield's vocals improved on this album and does a fine job with the rythm guitar.Hammet is a pretty good guitarist, he is no god of guitar, but he is good. Even though metallica are better then these talentless nu-metal bs bands today, they still are for these bands, and still support them, just so they can stay commercial. So all in all, they betrayed the metal scene, just like Ozzy did, see the ozzfest yourself now days. Still this is when Metallica was in their prime. Get this album if you love metal.
Rating: Summary: The Best Metallica Review: After the death of Cliff Burton, Metallica pressed on with new bassist Jason Newsted and delivered their greatest album here. Every song, from Blackened to Dyers Eve, shows Metallica at the peak of their technichal and songriting abilities. Metallica would never even come close to acheiving the greatness of AJFA, and I din't think they ever could...perfection is hard to repeat.
Rating: Summary: My favourite Metallica C.D. Review: In my opinion, this is Metallica's best album, although everyone else disagrees, saying that Master of Puppets is. And another thing, I don't know why the hell everyone's bitching about the production of this C.D, because it sounds just as good as any of their other C.ds, including The Black Album. This album also contains some of Metallica's best songs ever, most notably ONE. And Kirk Hammet has got to be one of the best guitarists to walk on the face of this earth.Thank God for Metallica, because they showed how great metal really was back then, because now I have to listen to talentless, ... bands like Korn, Slipknot, Limp Bizkit and Mudvayne to name a few. And I also thank them for making And Justice For All, one of the greatest albums ever. LONG LIVE METALLICA!!!!!!!!!!
Rating: Summary: ONE Review: I bought this cd just a few months ago. I heard it was really good but the production was not to scream hurray for. I listened to it and nothing was wrong with it. Honestly. Only the sound could have been better but anything else was fine. This was their big breakthrough. The album was released between MASTER OF PUPPETS and THE BLACK ALBUM and got into #6 on billboard 200. This album is great. Although it isn't as good as Master it becomes my 2nd favourite or third. This contained also their first hit single ONE. A great song on the album. If you don't have this one buy it you won't regret it.
Rating: Summary: Metallica ROCKS!!! Review: I recently bought this album because in my guitar magazines (guitar world) they were always talking about meatallica on how good of a guitarist Kirk Hammet was. I always knew that metallica was good but I had never tried to listen to any of their stuff. So when I bought it and popped it in the cd player this sweat guitar started to come out the speakers and then I listened to the whole album and it blew me away. Here are my grades for the songs Blackened "B+" - It took me a awhile to start liking this song but after awhile I started to really like it. It has sort of a punk rock mix with grundge beat to it. The lyrics and the singing aren't the best but overall it is a good song. It has a great guitar solo on it And Justice For All "A+" - One of the best songs on the cd(next to "One"). It has great lyrics, singing, guitar , bass and drums on this song. It has a great guitar solo on it too. This song rocks!!!!! Eye Of Beholder "B-" - This song is average. Its guitar riff is kind of monotonous. Even Though it is one of the worst songs on the cd it is still an average song. One "A+++++" - This is by far the greatest song of all time. Anyone who can say that this song [is bad] gotta be a total idiot. Provides a great rhythm guitar and lead guitar by James Henfield and Kirk Hammet respectivley. Great drum beat by Lars Ulrich and great bass by Jason Newstead. Great guitar solo (super fast like Eddie Van Halen or Joe Satriani). It is a great song about war. It accurately desacribes the horrors of war. It is Brilliant!! Shortest Starw- "C+" - This is probally the worst song on the cd. But it is still a quite good song. Harvester Sorrow- "B+" - The guitar on this song is good but the singing kinda [is bad] and the lyrics are dumb but other than that it is a good song Frayed Ends Of Sanity - A - This song has a great guitar riff. It perfectly blends in with the singing. The the guitar solo is also really great and the drums rock too. To Live is To Die - "A+" - This is the best insrumental yet. Most of them are usually boring but the guitar riffs and the solos keep this song interesting Dyer's Eve - "B-" - This is where Sytem of a down copied there song Chop Suey from they have identical riff's. Of course this version sounds much better. This song is kinda punk rocky. Band Ratings Kirk Hammet - "A+++++" - THis man is just as good as Eddie Van Halen and Joe Satriani and them men. James Henfield - "B+" - Good rhythm guitarist, Bad singer Lars Ulrich - A+ - Brilliant Drummer. Jason Newsted - B - Good Bass but needs to turn up volume on the bass guitar. Overall this albumb is A++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Rating: Summary: Perfect, but Lars gets on my nerves Review: Masterpiece: that's the first thing that comes to mind. About the shoddy production (especially to new listeners): i have to assume that the reviewer is referring to the bass sound -on that account, i will have to agree with them. But the rest of the album's sound was a main factor as to what entranced me for all of these years. It's tight, dry and totally unlike previous Metallica. The compostitions are complex and well thought out. Absolutely beautiful, I must say; ethereal. "One" is not the feature song on this album in my opinion; "Harvester of Sorrow" displays the indicative transformation from wet and '80's to dry and '90's -perhaps even further into the future. The album is enormous with respect to time, but keeps your eyes peeled and your mind active throughout the whole adventure. Five and a half stars actually.
