Rating: Summary: Start of the down turn... Review: The last good album prior to changing their name to SellOut-tica. Love the album and the songs on it, ...And Justice for All, One, To Live is to Die; awesome songs from the awesome Metallica I once knew.
Rating: Summary: The sell out begins Review: This album is their last good album I think. "ONE" and "To live to die" is true classics but the rest is to long and doesn't reach up to the metallica standard. Buy this and their older albums and the rest you can forget.
Rating: Summary: Metallica at it's peak Review: ...And Justice For All is arguably Metallica's best recording. In my opinion, only Master Of Puppets comes close. The most amazing thing of this record is that not a single song is boring. The album's nine tracks make over an hour of Metallica, but there is no dull moment to be found on this record. The album's style is diverse, from the fast and furious Dyers Eve, to the slow and touching To Live Is To Die. One is perhaps Metallica's greatest song ever, slowly evolving from a slow guitar solo to the great and incredibly fast ending. The title track is one of the most complex numbers ever composed by Metallica, giving Lars and Kirk the possibility to display their exceptional skills. James' deep, growling voice fits in perfectly. I cannot imagine some else's voice singing these songs, James' voice is just perfect for this. The skills the band members show on this album are incredible. Lars is almost machine-like when he gets behind his drums. Lars' drumming is often complex, sometimes very fast but always great. Just listen to the title track and concentrate on the drumming, it is just great. Kirk is definately one of the best metal guitarists. He sometimes leaves me completely awed with one of his solos. He too can play very fast, but if you listen to To Live Is To Die you'll see that slow doesn't have to mean boring. James' deep, growling voice has now fully matured . James also play's the guitar alongside with Kirk, sometimes he even performs a solo. Now you may have missed a mention of Jason, but that has a reason. The reason is that the production of this album is not, to put it mildly, very good. One of the side effects is that Jason's bass playing is hardly audible. Some people consider this to be an ode to Jason's deceased predecessor Cliff Burton, but I don't believe in that theory. Lyrically this albums explores new heights, handling subjects ranging from the destruction of the earth (Blackend), abuse of power (the title track) to a ferocious rage about struggling with your parents (Dyers Eve). Metallica is one of those bands who not only produce excellent music, but whose lyrics are very much worth listening to. The lyrics really want to tell you something, the songs capture you through the lyrics. I have owned this album for more than 5 months, but I still listen to it very frequently. For real metal fans this is a must have. Metallica fans who only know Load or ReLoad might give it a little hearing first. For the rest, go and buy it! You wont regret it!
Rating: Summary: Best Album Ever! Review: I knew Metallica was good, I was just unsure of what album to buy first. My cousin reccomended me this. I was blown away. It was over 2 years before i took it out of my cd player. This is Metallica at their best. Their songs have provocative, thought full lyrics, and amazing guitar work. The CD also contains my personal favorite song, One. This song starts slow, and gradually increases its speed. It talks about a war veteran who lost his sight, hearing, speech, arms, and legs in a war. If you do not own this album, go out right now and buy buy buy buy buy!!!!
Rating: Summary: Huh? Review: I just don't get it. How could Metallica, one of the best metal bands ever, release this as a follow up to Master of Puppets? I absolutely love this band, but the songs on this album really do sound like noise and a lot of yelling. On a side note- I have an IQ WAY above 70 (156), and I still love Metallica. I also happen to like Led Zeppelin, too.
Rating: Summary: Classic Review: Song Grades Blackened-obligatory thrash opener, but slightly better than Battery and Fight Fire With Fire Grade-B+ ...And Justice For All-one hell of an epic Grade-B+ Eye Of The Beholder-anthem against censorship, underated Grade-A One-the prototypical anti-war song, even better than "War Pigs" or "Rooster" Grade-A+ The Shortest Straw-thrash-by-numbers Grade-B Harvester Of Sorrow-classic Metallica Grade-A- The Frayed Ends Of Sanity-Great lyrics, but suffers a little musically Grade-B+ Dyers Eve-a little overated Grade-B While MOP And RTL were Metallicas Dark Side and Wish You Were Here, this was their Animals. You may not like it as much at first as the others because of its lyrical complexity and epic song-length, but by the 2nd time you listen to it you will like it as much as the others.
Rating: Summary: Despite the prodution, the songs stand out Review: Though the production is bleak and the person responsible for the bass tracks was sleeping the songs are simply outstanding. Injustice is the theme expressed throughout the album, from the system itself, to the harm we do to our mother earth. Hetfield's lyrics get better with each album, just listen to Dyer's Eve, or Eye of the beholder. Of course I have to mention One, lyric wise and music wise this song will be long be remembered as of the greatest heavy tunes ever, so melodic yet heavy, so angry yet laid back, it's a true masterpiece. My favorite track would have to be the instrumental To Live is to die wich was written by the late Cliff Burton, the first solo played by Hammett is my favorite off the whole album. The song starts out with an acoutsic guitar intro that fades out when the drums kick into full gear. Though I don't care for The frayed ends of sanity, shortest straw and harvester of sorrow too much(it may be because the other tunes simply outshines these) I would say that this album is essential to any Metallica collection. This is the last great Metallica album, and though the thrash days were behind them, Metallica shines on here with the ability to write incredible songs with such complexity, had Metallica continued in this direction what would've become of them?
Rating: Summary: Brutal, dark, and amazing!! Review: This is definatley Metallica's heaviest album. The production isn't too good, but it creates a somewhat "garagey" sound which somehow works well. Blackened: This is a killer metal song and the lyrics are amazing. It sounds like it's related to "Fight Fire With Fire" (Ride The Lightning, 1984), but I think it's better. One of the hardest Metallica riffs to play in my opinion. And Justice For All: EPIC!! This is truly a classic although very long (almost 10 minutes), but not the longest they've ever done. Every mood change in this song is amazing. You have to hear it to believe it. Eye Of The Beholder: The best lyrics on the album and some of the best in Metallica's history. Brutal guitars and great drums. This is a classic. One: Similar in structure to "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)" (Master Of Puppets, 1986) and "Fade To Black (Ride The Lightning, 1984). This is one of the best known Metallica songs. This is an amazing tale of a soldier who steps on a landmine rendering him senseless. The story can be linked to classics such as "For Whom The Bell Tolls" (Ride The Lightning) and "Disposable Heroes" (Master Of Puppets). The Shortest Straw: Not one of the best here, but the drums are very good, as are the lyrics and guitars. Harvester Of Sorrow: One of Metallica's classic live songs. This is a very wicked tune with very cool lyrics and riffs. James' vocals are also amazing. One of the best songs on the album. The Frayed Ends Of Sanity: Great title and even better lyrics. Features an into vocal part by Lars Ulrich doing the OH E OH YO OH song from the Wizard Of Oz. This is a very good song. To Live Is To Die: The last instrumental to this day that Metallica has done, which is a shame. This is a musical journey that touches the deepest parts of your soul. This is a masterpiece. Dedicated in memory to Cliff Burton (Killed in bus accident Sept. 27, 1986) Dyers Eve: Fastest drums Metallica has ever recorded! This song is brutal and the subject matter seems to tackle Hetfield's childhood. A true a$$ kicker.
Rating: Summary: Pretty cool CD! Not the best, but not the worst Review: This album, while not quite up to the quality of Metallica's first three albums, is still pretty good, and the last to maintain their 1980's sound. Jason Newsted, the new bassist, makes his album debut here, and in this particular case, you can't tell the difference from Cliff Burton, which is a good thing. This album amazed me with some pretty cool tracks, which tend to explore a darker side of human nature (well, most of their songs do, but this one especially). Blackened, Eye Of The Beholder, and One are among the band's finest songs. However, this album contains mostly unknown songs, so if you want the hits, you won't get 'em here. Also, the songs are long. REALLY long. To Live is to Die and And Justice For All both excede 9 minutes! Sure, length is usually a good thing, but there is such a thing as overdoing it a notch! This album is a cool one, but there are better ones (and fortunately, a few that are much worse.) I recommend this album to Metallica fans, but it's really more for the fans than just anyone. For the most part, only they will really appreciate these (lesser known)tracks. But don't let this fool you. It's still a cool album.
Rating: Summary: ....AND JUSTICE FOR THOSE WHO ROCK!!! Review: What can I say that hasn't already been said about this phenomenal album? I'm not sure, but I can tell you this: This beautiful work of musical art is top notch in my music collection. 9 furious, roaring tracks that pack a hurricane-force punch. "Blackened" is a fast paced romp which starts of with a 1-2 blast of smokin' guitars and drums. The title track "And Justice For All" is a 9-minute work of art. "Eye Of The Beholder" is a frenzy of heavy rhythm guitars. "One" is the full-automatic machine gun loaded with some of the heaviest and most complex guitars and drums. "The Shortest Straw", "Harvester Of Sorrow", "The Frayed Ends Of Sanity", all of which are also packed with complex tempo changes, which amaze me every time I listen. "To Live Is To Die" is an instrumental track which is simply amazing. The last track on the album is "Dyers Eve" in which James Hetfield and Co. thrash out one of the meanest and fastest metal anthems of all-time. Your guaranteed to be amazed at this music. This one is not for the faint of heart, so if your a fan of namby-pamby boy bands, TAKE A HIKE!!
