Rating: Summary: if you aren't BP Review: This book would be very helpful for those who just want more info about the sickness. It's right on and very informative. However, as I have BP, it made me feel worse than I already did. I hoped to find a way to deal wth this sickness, and it just made me feel crazy and hopeless. I received it on the weekend, and it really messed up my weekend. If you have BP, I wouldn't recommend it, because it's a book about things you already know about yourself, the way you act, etc. It won't make you feel good about yourself or justified.
Rating: Summary: Not Much Hope For Partners Of BPD's Review: I agree with the November 30, 1998 reviewer's comments. This was a good overview of what someone with BPD might be going through. Unfortunately, as that reviewer said, you can't fix someone else's problems. As someone who's read all there is on BPD (including SWOE) and who's begged their spouse to seek therapy, I've learned that there is no realistic way to cope with BPD if they won't even admit they have a problem. Sadly, divorce or breaking up might be the only way out unless you are willing to close yourself down emotionally. If you have kids, things are pretty bleak (at least until they are out of the house).
Rating: Summary: A Great Resource for Everyone! Review: This is a great book! Easy to read and follow! This book gives you all the facts and breaks it down for you! This is a great book for anyone, especially teens just diagnosed with BPD
Rating: Summary: Helpful but not Hopeful Review: This was the first book I read after being diagnosed with BPD. While it did not paint a picture of a fantastic and miraculous recovery, it did detail the criteria of BPD and helped me make REAL connections between the case studies it contains and my own life. It also gave my husband something to help him better understand the disorder as well, but he felt it painted the disorder in a rather hopeless light. So, as a source of information and understanding of the disorder, its excellent... however, if you are hoping to find a cheery and hopeful message about recovery, its not here (and probably rightfully so). Part of the problem with my BPD is that I have an unrealistic view of reality and reading a book that said "all you have to do is a, b and c" would not have inspired me to get real help. The ONLY way to recover from BPD is to get help from a real, qualified therapist. I would recommend this book as a good, informative albeit basic one to "break the ice" and help understand the disorder. It gives real insight into the disorder. However, you'll need to look to therapy and some of the other more recovery-oriented books for help in making real change.
Rating: Summary: Border conflicts turn nasty at the least provocation.. Review: "Ignorance is bliss": which implies no news is good news; the news here is that - out of the blue and suddenly - what seemed like a match made in heaven can best be described in Nabokov's words from Lolita - -I was living in a heaven with a sky the color of hellfire." The rescued maiden turns into a troll at unexpected intervals, reminding one of the awkwardly-timed metamorphoses of the Incredible Hulk... Having found the perfect match -yet there were already telltale signs - nagging doubts and emotions beneath the surface which I always knew were not in error, and foretold the relationship's demise - I came face-to-face with a vengeful demon seemingly possessing the one close to me. Verily I say unto you, there was clearly brainwashing occurring; particularly ominous was the insistence on "not discussing our problems with others": isolation of the victim. Constant demands which could not possibly be satisfied; aberrant behavior - affairs, threats, desperate pleas for forgiveness; vicious verbal assaults which were, occasionally, transparently all in the other's head.... Belittling of myself and others, and morbid fear of even the slightest setbacks - "Do you think that makes me stupid?" This book precisely delineates these behaviors, which gave me considerable relief; an emotional disaster seems less awful if it is part of a demographic trend, somehow... I know now that it ended for my benefit and - as mentioned by another reviewer - I shall be much more cautious in future... One does feel sorry, though...
Rating: Summary: truth Review: I read this book several years ago and was left with nothing but a feeling of utter despair and hopelesness. Contrary to man's attempt to analyze and proclaim that which he can only rationalize, there is a cure. But we all have the choice --beleive the lie or learn the TRUTH. The theories and lies of this world are many but through just a small step of faith you will see. "And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." (John 8:32).
Rating: Summary: A reader from washington state Review: I have picked it up several times but never copletly fished it because of the difcult content.
Rating: Summary: Stone Age Review: On the positive side, this is the first book I'm aware of that delineates the difficulties of having BPD or loving a person who does. However, it is a dinosaur that has outlived its usefulness. There are so many effective therapeutic treatments and useful pharmaceuticals now available to treat BPD. This guide, while it deserves respect as a venerable pioneer in explaining this confusing mood disorder, needs to be put at the bottom of the reading list for anyone interested in obtaining BPD information. It is far too negative and antiquated. It makes it sound as if there is no way out of BPD. But there is.
Rating: Summary: Information in this book is too old Review: I agree that this book is well written, but I, as someone with borderline personality disorder, believe that when this book was written, treatment for the disorder was not establised in an organized way. I think this book writes about the disorder as if there is no hope for those who have the disorder. I know that is isn't author's fault. When the book was written, it was probably true that there was nothing to help individuals with the disorder. I admit that this book gives me a good understanding about the disorder, but I am concerned that someone thinks there is no hope if you are diagnosed with the disorder. In terms of treatment and therapy, what the book is telling us is no longer true today. The borderline personality disorder is treatable today.
Rating: Summary: A must for anyone dealing with BPD in any way! Review: This is the book that gave me the knowledge and understanding of BPD. It is a thorough explanation from borderlines themselves and people who live with borderlines. Not only does the author give examples of behaviors but then also provides possible ways to control the behaviors. I highly recommend!
