Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: First of all, I would not consider this book a romance. A romantic historical novel, sure. A romance, no. So if you aren't reading this book because you think it's a romance--that excuse is out. I think Gabaldon's writing is really excellent. It's difficult to write a book like this in first person, but she pulls it off very well. The characters are developed so thoroughly that you remember them long after you're done reading. And the history--wow. If you're a history buff, you'll love how Gabaldon ties in all the historical events of the period in with the story. Amazing. Of the first 3 novels in the series, I liked this one the best by far. I've read it many times. So...give it a whirl!
Rating: Summary: I don't read romance, but I loved this series Review: A girlfriend told me I must read this book and I did so to appease her. The first few chapters are slow-going, but if you can make it to Scotland, you've made it baby! After the first love scene, I was ready to pounce on my own husband--pure erotica without the empty-headed "pulsing loins" garbage. The characters' plights and perils gently tug at your emotions and then thrash them. You will be exhausted after some of the things Jamie and Claire, and their love, live through. I have read all four books twice, and eagerly await the next installment.
Rating: Summary: Glad to see others loved it like I did!!!! Review: I couldn't put the whole series down! The second one read a little slower. But the 3rd and especially the 4th one in the series was great. I hated to see them end. I work with 12 ladies in an office and we all loved them. One even wrote the publisher to find out if it was really over. Too bad it was. What a great get-away series.
Rating: Summary: GREAT BOOK!!!!!!!!!! Review: Bar none, this is the best book, and series that I have ever read. I can't say enough about how much I enjoyed reading it. Don't pass it up!!
Rating: Summary: Buy it, buy it, buy it, buy it! Review: Although it's been over a year since I finished Diana's third book, when the subject of "something good to read" came up at a business lunch today, I found myself blabbing on and on about Claire and Jaimie. I saw my companion's eyes glaze over when I mentioned "romance" and "time travel" but I hope I convinced her to try Outlander. After that she'll be hooked. I too am a bit snobby about what I read and would never stoop to buy anything with Fabio on the cover, but these books are different. I was unaware of my surroundings for days and read while eating, dressing, walking, you name it. I carried my book everywhere, even in the car, just in case I'd have a spare second at a stop light. When I wasn't reading I was thinking about the characters. I've been a voracious reader for nearly 40 years and never had characters take up permanent residence in my head the way Claire and Jaimie have. I've got to get to Scotland some day! I bought the 4th book, Drums of Autumn, some time ago but am actually SAVING it for a special, long, luxurious weekend. ENJOY!
Rating: Summary: Couldn't put it down Review: I'm not what you'd call a serious fan of romance novels. Most of the time I read them to get a good laugh. Outlander, however, transcends the genre, and is one of the best books I've read in a long time. The book was recommended to me by a friend, and after reading the first book I immediately had to go out and buy the other three. Perfect escapist reading, great for lying by a pool in summer. I remember laughing in some parts, nearly sobbing in others, and enjoying the passionate and enduring romance between Jamie and Claire. It's not often you find a truly well-written romance novel - most of them border on the ridiculous. Outlander and all the other books break the mold. If you want a truly enjoyable read, buy this book! I guarantee you won't be able to put it down.
Rating: Summary: One of the best books I've ever read! Review: I never thought I could finish an 850-page book in 4 days, but I did with "Outlander!" I just couldn't put the book down. I got so terribly involved with Jamie and Claire, I honestly felt as if I were THERE with them. I fell in love with Jamie and liked Claire better than almost any fictional heroine I've ever encountered. I was skeptical about beginning it, because I don't like romances and -- even though I'm a European history freak -- have never found the time of Bonnie Prince Charlie very interesting, but now I'm addicted and so glad I gave it a try. I recommend this book and its sequels to everyone!
Rating: Summary: Addicting........ Review: Claire is thrown back 200 years in time. She ends up in Scotland, shortly before the time that Prince Charlie attempts to retake the thrown for his father, King James. She meets and marries the perfect man - Jamie Fraser. This novel is part of a series. At the moment I am reading the 2nd in the series - Dragonfly in Amber. This series is so much more than a typical "romance" novel. I cannot say enough good things about it. There is something for everyone in this series. So far there are four novels in the series. According to the author, Diana Galbaldon, there will be at least two more. I will savour and cherise each one. Each novel is at least 800 pages long and each and every page is a joy. You truely get your money's worth.
Rating: Summary: Excellent escapist fare! Review: Other than the Tolkien series, this series of books has been my lifetime favorite. I must say a few words with regards to the audio-cassette. The reader, Ms. James was familiar to me from television's "Jewel in the Crown". She is an excellent actress and her performance on this audio-cassette is nothing less than brillant. I wish she would read the unabridged edition because there is so much more content in the book as to make the cassette seriously lacking. But the cassette gives you an appetite for the book and Ms. James brings the characters alive. Having experienced both, I recommend both the book and the cassette. Ms.James would make an excellent "Claire" should a series or movie be considered!
Rating: Summary: The unbelievable made believable by an excellent writer Review: I have just finished the third book in the series and can not wait to start the fourth. It looks like Diana G.will be writing about Jamie and Claire for the rest of her life because her public will demand it. I loved this book.
