Rating: Summary: very similar to another author's story Review: This book is reminiscent of Jude Devreaux's novel, "A knight in Shining Armor." A woman from the twentieth century travels back in England (not Scotland) to find her true love. if you liked either of these books, try the other.
Rating: Summary: "romance"... a very limiting catagory Review: Gosh, how to describe the start of this series...? I'd give it ten stars and gold-plating if I could. (Any review I give will not do this work justice at all...; that said, IT'S ABSOLUTELY BLOODY BRILLIANT. While this series is most definitely the best I've ever read, I agree with those that have mentioned that 'Romance' as a genre stifles the scope of Gabaldon's work. How many people have written the book off as just another bodice-ripper with little plot and less intelligence just because it was in the romance aisle? Even the author herself doesn't catalogue herself that way. I think what makes this series so stupendous is that it defies any catagory, right?-- It's just simply a great work of literature. As a good fan of fine writing, I wish potential readers would get past the appearances and experience how great these books are...Like everyone else says: DEFINITELY WORTH IT. Not to sound repetitive, but I firmly believe that once you've read "Outlander", you'll be hooked. Very intelligent, and very addicting!
Rating: Summary: Thank God I came to this series late! Review: I happened upon Drums of Autumn right after finishing up my MA in English. I was looking for something light and unlike anything I had to read for my degree, hence the romance section. While reading the book, I found myself thinking that it was great, but that I had to know what happened before Jamie and Claire came to America. Outlander is my favorite in the series - I think because the main characters are closer to my age in that book. I have read all of the series repetedly, something my husband teases me for, but likely appreciates when I do finally put the book down and attack him . I want to find the copy of Dragonfly in Amber that has the artist's portrait of Jamie. (Please e-mail me if you know which one it is.) All these books are a fabulous read - well written, action packed, and they will truly make you fall in love. Read this book if you are completely in love with your spouse. Read this book if you are looking to put a spark back in your relationship. Read this book if you are feeling lonely. Whatever you do, read this book!
Rating: Summary: THE BEST SERIES EVER! Review: Jamie and Claire - what more is there to say? I finished all four books in the series 2 years ago and am waiting quite impatiently for The Fiery Cross. Diana, please hurry!!! Reading these books has absolutely ruined me for any other romance / historical fiction books - none of the others can come close to capturing Claire's determination, feistyness, humor...or Jamie's sexiness, to-die-for love for his soulmate, and compassion. If you have not already read Outlander (and the other 3 books in the series), I envy you - you are about to take a life-changing adventure!
Rating: Summary: One of the most engrossing books I've read! Review: I found this to be one of the most fantastic books I've ever had the pleasure to read. Gabaldon's gift for storytelling makes these books hard to put down and makes it hard to let go of her characters. Fans of all things Celtic, and of all things romantic, will love it!
Rating: Summary: If only there were 6 stars! Review: Like everyone else on this review page...I can't say enough about this book. I have recommended to friends and relatives...two words for anyone looking for a book where you automatically picture your characters and feel their pains and happiness...."READ IT". As a side note, don't let the size of this book scare you away, you won't even notice them fly by....Happy reading:)
Rating: Summary: the best I have ever read Review: I first read Outlander while vacationing in Scotland in 1993. I stood on the battlefields of Culloden and imagined Claire and Jamie and all they lived through. I have since read the three follow-up books and fell in love with all of them. I rarely keep books after I read them and since I gave this series to my cousin (who also fell in love with the characters, and named her beautiful baby girl Brianna)and had to replace my hardcover copies. I have bought the paperback versions and have given them to friends to read on several occasions.
Rating: Summary: Gets even better the 5th time around! Review: I have read Diana Gabaldon "Outlander"/"Cross Stitch" series at least 4 times in the past 7 years. Each time I read them, I love them more. The characters are so vivid and complex, they feel "real" to the reader. Diana's thorough research into 18th century Scottish history along with 18th century American history is unbelievable. To imagine that she has a PhD in marine biology and yet can write a series like this is amazing. It is only a shame that it there is so much time between books (which is easy to understand, I wouldn't want a shallow book. The detail needed is very important). Definately read this book if you are thinking about it!
Rating: Summary: The most touching and amusing book in years. Review: The Author brings together the aspects of history and romance and in a unusual setting. The reader can but identify with the heroine and her Jamie. I ate the book in such a short time that sleep fell incredebly short. My recomendation to other readers: find the apropriate musik in "Sons of Somerled" by Steve McDonald. It really completes the pleasure of reading "Outlander".
Rating: Summary: great read !! Review: Recently have completed the first three books in this series and am about to start the fourth. Down here in NZ though the first one is titled "CROSS STITCH" so as you can imagine there is a small amount of confusion. well worth reading.
