Rating: Summary: GETTING OVER IT Review: I loved this book - absolutely loved it! I found myself reading constantly - I just couldn't put it down. I laughed, got teary-eyed, and actually did a couple of "Oh no's!" out loud while reading it, too. It is quite British with its humor and lingo, which I personally enjoy. It may be fiction but it sure hits home for a lot of us singles out there. Buy it! Read it, and read it again!
Rating: Summary: One Star is Generous Review: Considering all the praise lavished on the by the people here I was expecting a lovable novel about the trials and tribulations of a difficult woman in the Bridget Jones fashion. I like, but did not love BJ so I figured this Helen Bradshaw might have exaclty what is takes to be the quintessential British, single girl herione.I was wrong. First off let me warn the reader that the heroine is completely unlikable. She has no great beliefs nor goals (compare to BJ quest for innerpoise), does not really like her friends nor her family. Her would-be goof-ball behavior instead comes off as mean and stupid. After Reading it I searched for other reviews of the novel and found one which described the style as "cosmogirl goes to a funeral". Every Chapter begins with a vignette of what life was like before that will inevitably tie into the current situation. The tecnique would work better in short stories and here is a constat riminder that this is a lightweight, trying to use the heavey situations for comedy. Far along it feels like Ms. Maxted knows the formula, just not how to satisfy. The love interest is usually painfully too good for Helen which only makes Helen come off looking worse especially when she pickes fights and then blames him. The only scene that sugests differently is one where he seems rather like a creepy pervert, though the scene is suppossed to be the romantic comedy the rest of the novel tries to be. Maybe because of her work in magazeens the author decided to add some social issuses. I suppose they are supposed to add heftby but they just clutter the story with more unlikable events. I could understand just the death of the father storyline, but the mother suicide attempt, Adrian abusing Tina just make Helen seem more pithy and despicable. Also with this taking up some much of the time it is impossible to give a damn about romantic tribulations and work. Don't waste you time nor your money. Find something else to do.
Rating: Summary: Disappointed Reader Review: Maybe my expectations were too high but what a disappointment. To me, this was no Girl's Guide or Confessions of a Shopaholic (loved those two). The main character here is the only saving grace of this book, she's amusing at times and believable but the others, esp. the male characters are complete bores. I read the other 2 books mentioned in a few days but this one will prob. go with the last third unread. Bor-ing.
Rating: Summary: A Funny, Poignant Book Review: This is an extremely well written and very touching novel. Yes, it is a comedy which will appeal to any reader who loves Bridget Jones, but it is much more. It touches on two very serious subjects - coping with the death of a loved one and domestic violence. When the latter subject arose late in the book, it struck me like a brick wall - but the author dealt with the violence in a brutally honest way which managed somehow to not detract from the overall wit and humour of the novel as a whole. Bravo, Anna Maxted - I look forward to more of you.
Rating: Summary: What-ever!! Review: Hilarious? If you consider the first few chapters describing in morbid detail the painful death of her father and her inner thoughts on his rotting flesh and decaying body, and on, and on, AND ON...I couldn't get through the first few chapters. Sure the writing is good and witty, but this is so depressing, not humorous in the least. If you want light hearted and fun....move on!
Rating: Summary: Intelligent and Funny Review: Once you start 'Getting Over it' you will likely believe that the plot will be very similar to Bridget Jones' Diary and Edge of Reason. However, 'Getting Over It' is an absolute riot! You will be laughing out loud, and relating to the many situations that Maxted describes, even though you may never admit it! Getting Over It, is centred on it's main character, Helen, as she deals with her father's sudden death and her relationships with her family and friends. Through bad relationships, a neurotic mother, disgruntled room-mates, lonliness, and a cat (fatboy), that only loves you conditionally, Maxted will leave you satisfied looking for more. Although she is a little quirky and sometimes has bad luck, one cannot help but cheer when Helen finds success. The characters are extremely well developed, and the reader will easily capture a visual picture in their mind. Maxted has taken a peek at the ordinary and made it hilarious. I applaud Anna Maxted, she has a true gift for making people laugh at life's off times! I'm anxiously awaiting for Maxted's newest!
Rating: Summary: Getting over It Review: HATED IT! If you're looking for a fun read, this is not your pick. There is lots of really depressing stuff in this book. I had hoped for a quick read about a directionless 30-something trying to find her way. The book is tarnished with parents dying or attempting suicide and too-graphic accounts (for my taste) of domestic violence. The violence was terrible and ruined my week. I know domestic violence is out there - just prefer not to read about it in my free time before bed.
Rating: Summary: Don't waste your time Review: This book was such a waste of time. Does not even compare to Helen Fielding's witty Bridget Jones. Stupid and pointless. Save your money and time.
Rating: Summary: Entertaining, but predictable Review: I liked Anna Maxted's book about a single girl from London who finds out through the death of her father (a plot device) who her mother and friends really are, but I wonder whether I'm just getting too much of the whole Bridget Jones singleton craze. Nevertheless, Maxted will make you laugh out loud, and I have to say that Fatboy -- just by the way she brings him to life -- is my favorite character from the novel, even though he's "only" a cat. The biggest problem I had with "Getting Over It" was that I could see all the major complications in Helen's life coming from a mile away. That's not to say that the novel isn't worth reading -- it's a great way to spend a rainy afternoon, but it's certainly not literature.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely Amazing Review: If you've read Mr.Maybe, Ralph's Party or 30 Nothing by Lisa Jewell, you'll love this book by Anna Maxted. There are so many things I could idenify with. This is the type of book I like to read. Funny with some reality combined. It will make you laugh out loud!
