Summary: One of the worst book ever.
Review: This book was so boring. I bought this book a few years ago and thank god it was cheaper than the regular price. I would have been mad, I wasted $8 on this book. On the other hand, this book wasn't worth any of my money at all.
I was half way into the book and found it uninteresting. It was incredibly boring and the characters seem like they have not been developed at all. I don't know what went through JD's mind when she wrote this book. I got furious when the female character threw herself at the gorgeous Montgomery. They both seem like they don't connect.
I hope JD's new books are better than this and keep her fans interested like Sweet Liar.

Summary: This one was magical.......
Review: I cannot begin to understand why this book has generated so much negative feedback! I can admit at first I was surprised since this was different from Ms. Deveraux's other books, but I loved the story!

I could not stop laughing out loud at Darci! I could not put the book down and was sad when it was over.

Thank you Ms. Deveraux!!

Summary: Read only if you have to read everything by Jude D
Review: I give this book two stars for being written by Ms. Deveraux and having a Montgomery in it, otherwise I wouldn't have wasted my time. It is a far cry from her usual style, almost science-fiction/mystery NOT good romance. The storyline goes way over the top and there is no character exploration. I never really felt like I knew any of the players. I do not intend to read any of the sequels.

Summary: One of Jude D.'s worst books.
Review: If I could have given this book no stars I would have. I own virtually every Jude Deveraux book and have read her for 14 years. Though witchcraft isn't my thing, I bought this book anyway b/c it featured a Montgomery. Boy, was that a mistake. The plot was implausible. The characters unlikeable. And I can't believe she killed off some Montgomerys! She hasn't written a good book since "Sweet Liar." Each year the books get progressively worse. I haven't even bothered to read the sequel.

Summary: Decent throughout, but disappointing ending
Review: This book had me on the edge of my seat the whole time but the build up was really for nothing. The ending is incredibly disappointing, right at the peak of it, the main characters become detached from the action, then Jude fast forwards a year. So the reader reads about the ending then, and quite honestly, it is very much down-played. It's still a good book, just don't expect much from the conclusion.

Summary: A Departure From the Norm
Review: Yes, this novel is different. It is not your typical romance novel as it is more violent, and containes no sex scenes. However, I am hard-pressed to understand the negativity that this book has generated. I found the heroine to be an interesting, mutli-layered individual. Some of her antics may have come across as goofy, or downright asanine, but they all had an underlying cause that said a lot about her past and her character. There is a lot more to this character than what can easily be seen on the surface. That's my take on it anyway.

Second, I found nothing in this book that either justified or glorified child abuse. The story was presented as a fantastical event perpetrated by a character who was pure evil. The author in no way advocated the harming of children. As a Social Worker, I work with abused and neglected children every day. This is a fictional story. If you really want scary, try reality sometime. To say that Ms. Deveraux is promoting child abuse in her story is both ludicrous and irresponsible.

As for the story itself, I found it to be refreshing and enjoyable. The reason I only give it four stars is because I was not too crazy about the ending. Otherwise, a good read. Yes it is different. But are we as romance readers so set in our ways that we are going to burn an author(a beloved author no less)at the stake for daring to be different?

Summary: Readers can be so unforgiven
Review: Listen, as with most things, there is change. I've read some of Jude's other books. to say that she promotes child abuse in her books is outrageous, just totally stupid. If you as a reader are making comments like this then you need to take a trip to Disneyland and get a grip. I can't believe how just because someone has a bit of fun while writing that we as reader accuse them of what, "change" Jude's book was wonderful as was the other one at least the ones I've read. I say clam down it's a book, and yes, if you haven't notice it's also a part of life. Take a chill pill lady, get a grip. and eat ice cream while reading her next book.

Summary: Forever...: A Novel of Good and Evil
Review: This was a wonderful book!!! I didn't want to put it down. I loved the blend of romance and supernatural and laughed out loud several times.

Rating: 1 stars
Summary: Awful. Contains violence against children!
Review: I have been reading Jude Devereaux since the 80s, and I still have all the books she's written up until this one. The River Triolgy, the "four corners of America" Quartet, the Twin series--all are top notch, as are so many of her other books. Since the early 90s or so, Jude has done several "time travel" or even modern books, but most are so well-written, I didn't care that she was moving away from my favorite genre (historical). Sweet Liar was very modern but also became one of my favorites.

In the last few years, however, her writing style has not only been in "modern times" but has also been a little below par compared to her earlier works. High Tide really annoyed me, as I found both lead characters unlikeable, and the plot was so confusing and contrived that I had to force myself to finish the book. But still, when a new Jude Deveraux book came out, I would buy it, no questions asked. Until now.

I am still appalled that Ms. Deveraux could write a book that is so boring, contrived, and worst of all--violent! She brutally kills off two characters of the beloved Montgomery line, which to me is just asking to alienate the millions of readers who love the Montgomerys (and who, incidentally, have made her the very rich woman she is today). But the unforgivable, in my opinion, is her brutal treatment of children in this book. She writes about abusing, tortuting, and "doing away with" children in this book carelessly, as if we, as readers, shouldn't bat an eye at such doings. I'm sorry, but I don't want to read about child abuse in ANY book, but most certainly not in a ROMANCE novel! I was so stunned in reading those plot details that I thought to myself, "This woman must not have children, because no mother would be able to write about child abuse and death with such a cavalier attitude." Imagine my surprise when I turned to the back of the book and saw that she has a young son! Thinking of what she described in this book still makes me shiver.

I realize that some people like this kind of fantasy writing, where the characters are less developed and the plot is extremely far-fetched, but if this is what Ms. Deveraux will be writing from now on, she needs to no longer be categorized as a romance novelist. I will not waste any more money on a book from Ms. Deveraux unless she returns to her roots. If she wants to branch out and appeal to a new audience, so be it, but I believe she is going to lose a GREAT deal of her fan base with this change.

Summary: Very Disappointed
Review: I have every book Jude Deveraux has written. That tells you how much I love her work. But the last 4 books have been disappointing. "The Mulberry Tree" started out great but dissolved into a mystery novel. "Forever", with it's take-turn 'voice overs' and a female lead that I found I couldn't really care about. (She was more annoying than anything else). Not the strong women leads Deveraux is known for. (This 'he said-she said' continues in "Wild Orchids". Again a mystery novel rather than romance and nothing about the Taggerts or Montgomerys). Then "Forever and Always". The same annoying her turn/his turn and just a filler novel until the third "Always" book comes out to finish the story. There seems to be a running "I really want sex" theme throughout these 4. I noticed in her biography bit at the back of the book she seems to be unmarried/divorced and lives with her small son. If that's what it takes to bring back the old Jude Deveraux writing, take Jackie Maxwell's advice in "Wild Orchids" - 'I decided I needed to start dating'
