Summary: Three cheers for cynical over-achievers!
Review: Jess Darling is a smart, sassy teen trying to find her place in the world. With her best friend gone and her sister's upcoming wedding, sophomore year doesn't look so good. Jess's other obstacles include: her father's coaching excess, shallow friends, and an absent menstrual cycle. Like so many teens, Jess retreats to a cocoon of stress and isolation-but she does it with hilarious, insightful wit.

McCafferty navigates both her plot and her heroine with compassionate savvy. The angst is painfully familiar; the prose is honest. Many of the characters are distinctive, and the bond between Jess and Marcus grows in especially interesting ways. Thank goodness, an author willing to suggest that high schoolers respect intelligence, and even find it attractive!

My only problem with the text involved its over-the-top slang. The Y2K references, especially, will date this book almost immediately. All in all, though, that's a fairly small issue. I would recommend this book to teens and sympathetic adults alike.

Summary: The Journal of a teen...
Review: Sloppy Firsts is the journal of a teenage girl, Jessica Darling, going through her junior year of high school. After her best friend, Hope, moves away, she finds herself hanging out with the "Clueless Crew," and having mixed feelings about Marcus Flutie, a dreg who was practically the cause of Hope moving away. This straight-A student, and track star's personal journal gives readers insight on what it is like going through teenage years these days.
As a teenager myself, I was able to relate to Jessica's high school drama. It was very hard for me to put this book down, because I was always interested in what crazy twist or outcome that would happen next. This book was able to give me mixed emotions from happiness to sadness. Jessica is absolutely hilarious to the point that you will find yourself laughing out loud. No matter what Jessica was going through, on some level I could relate. Overall I really enjoyed this book.
In the introduction the author says that this novel will "appeal to readers who are still going through it, as well as those who are grateful that they don't have to go back and grow up all over again." As for me, I am still going through it. If I had to imagine myself as an older woman, depending upon my sense of humor, I think that I would still appreciate this novel. As an older woman I would find myself laughing at the humorous dealings that I once went through. I think this novel is too mature to be in the teen section of bookstores but it's borderline as if it should be in the adult section.
I praise Megan McCafferty, who is able to write about a teenager's life the way an actual teenager can relate. Many adult authors try but have failed. There were no awkward coincidences, nor was there any unbelievable occurrences. It was as if an actual teenager had written the journal.

Review: WOWOWOWOW! This is an AWESOME BOOK! Every page is hilarious! I actually don't think that many teens however can relate the book. The author depicts an idea of high school that is portrayed in movies and such but of course, this is never how it really is. Nevertheless, it is a great read that gets you inside Jessica's sarcastic mind. This is my favorite book of all time!! After I read it I told all my friends read it and they thought it was hilarious as well! SEcond helpings the sequel, is also great, though not as good as this book. If you're looking for a good times and tons of laughs pick this book up!!!!

Summary: Five Star Phenomenon
Review: Sloppy Firsts by Megan McCafferty takes you into the journal and life of sophomore Jessica Darling. Jessica is a regular, American teenager struggling with boys, school, her parents, and most of all the fact that her best friend just moved away.
Sloppy Firsts has become my favorite book in just two weeks. The main character is so relative, and the situations and cliques she's involved in and struggling with are problems I face everyday. It's funny, heart-filled, and outrageously fantastic. If you're a high school, teenage girl, you don't want to miss this book. Once you pick it up, you won't want to put it down. You laugh, you cry, and most of all, you have fun!

Summary: Laughed till I cried...
Review: I never read any book that made me laugh/cry and shout out loud YESSSS! when I completely understood what Jessica was feeling. After reading the whole book in less than a day I was convinced that McCafferety had some insider peek to the female teen brain.

Jessica was real and human in all her infallible ways and in my opinion that was the true attraction and success of the book. Jessica's not a beauty, shes not the most popular, but like everyone she possesses sterling qualities that make her a unique individual. And like any insecure teen, Jessica falls short of realizing how truly special and strong she truly is. That is until her best friend Hope moves away and Jessica is left to deal with the CLuess Crew, her big Crush, and The Boy Who Shall Remain Nameless all by herself.

There is humor and angst, moments where you slap your forehead in adolescent reminiscince...whatever you experienced as a teen or are going through now, you can relive and relate to in Jessica Darling. Buy this book TODAY!

Summary: A Winner!
Review: Jessica Darling is a sophomore in high school. She's a top-notch honor student, has two good parents and a reasonably good life. At least, that's how she'll remember it. For now she's Jess, lowest of the low, unpretty, unpopular, plenty of guys but none of the right ones and - to make matters worse - her best friend just moved away. She and Hope have been best friends since forever and have always done absolutely EVERYTHING together; now she's gone, leaving Jess to suffer through lunch with the Clueless Crew (three tipsy blondes whose greatest fear is that they'll run out of foundation during fifth period) and to brave weekends alone. What about some male companionship? Well, there's Scotty...he's of the "jock" quality and is more full of himself than a balloon is of helium. Then, out of the blue, there's Marcus, a "dreg" so zonked out on anything that burns he can hardly remember his own middle name and is known around school for his scores amongst the "hoochies".

Megan McCafferty will take you plummeting back into those "hallowed halls of academie" in an extremely accurate and vivid portrayal or life in high school. Many of the characters are not well-rounded, but in my opinion that too is an accurate portrayal of the world as seen through the eyes of a teenage student. McCafferty's style of prose is simplistic, serving to make it more readable for all audiences, yet not detracting from the imagery or the story itself. The plot is fairly simple...but just how dramatic WAS high school anyway?

I greatly enjoyed this book...I read it all in a day and the second one the following day...while it's not in a genre I normally like it's style and the way the story moved along made it an extremely intriguing read. The book is geared toward adolescents but the style is sufficient to engage readers of all ages preteen on up. I wouldn't suggest it for the little kids...the teenage preoccupation with sex does come into play at times. All-in-all a recommended read. Another fun novel I also recommend is The Losers' Club by Richard Perez

Summary: The best teen book. Ever.
Review: Sloppy Firsts is a book that totally captures what being a teen and what being in high school is really like. I love that they make Jessica Darling, the story's heroine, so real and flawed - showing that even when you seemingly have everything together on the outside, inside it can feel the opposite. I also LOVE how much the books remind me of John Hughes' Sixteen Candles and Breakfast Club. Everyone i know can relate to these books - they're amazing!

Summary: Me and her are practically related
Review: I love books that I can relate myself too. Finally, a girl with ambitions, smarts, intellegence, and a love for running. I read it in shock of our similarities. The book made me crack up in class and made people wonder what I was reading about.

A young Jessica has to put up with her sister's wedding, finding a date, and having to run because her dad wants her to. People start wondering why Jessica doesn't have a boyfriend, and why she is one of the only virgin's in the school. She holds a crush on the gorgous Paul, and has a odd experiance with him when she gets drunk.

Jessica has to deal with the whole peeing in Marcus' cup experiance, which is quite humorous, and far fetched.

The author's style is beautiful, the book will make you laugh out loud. After reading a couple bad books in a row, I was finally satisfied after I read Sloppy Firsts. I can't wait to read the sequel to this. I'm sure it will be as cute and Sloppy as the first.
