Rating: Summary: One of the absolute best books I have ever read. Review: Whew!! Wally Lamb has done it again. I hope he's busy writing his next novel - can't wait to get my hands on it. Part of Dominick Birdsey lives in all of mankind. What a redemptive story of self-hate to self-acceptance. The characters are so real - it's as if you could reach out and touch them. Anyone feeling responsibility for a family member's survival will truly relate to this one. Reading the book, my shoulders actually felt heavy , as if I, like Dominick, carried the weight of the world on my shoulders. Wally Lamb makes sense of life and all the pain it brings. Pain carried from one generation to the next and the next. This is a book any human being, who is the least bit self-aware, could relate to. I cried after I finished it. I can't remember the last time I did that after reading a book. Get a hot cup of coffee, relax in your favorite chair, open up and get lost in this great read!
Rating: Summary: Brilliant! Review: Worth every one of the 900 pages... and more. The ending was a bit to tidy, but I welcome happy endings when I can get them!!!
Rating: Summary: This is a literary pieta. Review: Wally Lamb has woven an emotional conduit that reaches out and connects us all in those ways that we need to find communion. Like a journey, the plot's twists and hairpin turns enmeshed me and moved me with the unexpected. I was so at a loss at the end of this book, in that it was over. This author has given us reason to recognize that he has felt the sun on his face, known reclaimation. He has offered up this book much like the sacrificial hand of Thomas the mentally ill brother in the book, so that we might know, we all have the potential to find redemption. This book has the power to heal. I can only hope that Mr. Lamb will not suffer too greatly from the wholesale worship that will surely besiege him after this. If anything impedes his production of future works we will all loose out . I read this book in five days. I have always wanted to write, and standing in the shadow of this work has both humbled, and inspired me, shocked me that I could feel so deeply about writing. Bravo! Wally Lamb
Rating: Summary: "random soul-searching" Review: Quickly engrosses the reader in psycho-analysis and stereotypes of the 40's and 50's. A great story, but it was frustrating to observe characters who had great difficulty distinguishing between things in life one can control and things that are out of our hands. Perhaps the author actually wanted us to see how suicidal some of our activities are and sort of adapt a psychic-health analysis for the 90's. At any rate, the opening scenario of twins with varying states of mental health was just too delicious to pass up...And the venture into little Sicily dries up any sweet, romantic ideas of the last century we may harbor-- but I have a feeling this description of immigrant life is probably more realistic than most we've been fed!
Rating: Summary: A book worth taking the time to read Review: This book kept me interested through all of its almost 900 pages. I really felt the pain and confusion of the main character. I even got annoyed with him when he lashed out against people in the "system" and when he blamed himself for his brother's behavior. I felt his humiliation at the "bus" incident and found myself thinking about this book long after I had finished reading it. Wally Lamb had written another winner.
Rating: Summary: Most Amazing Book Ever Review: I just finished this book last night, and I'm now actually sad because it's over. The ending was not at all what I expected but it made me cry -- there is hope for any of us -- even in the most desperate of situations. I think this book could teach all of us something -- that we all come from somewhere and are who we are in great part because of our ancestors. I truly related to Dominic in his struggle to discover who he was. I want every one I know to read this book!
Rating: Summary: Good book - but "She's Come Undone" is still his masterpiece Review: There's nothing like curling up in my recliner with a good book to read - a nice big, fat one too! There was lots of stuff going on in this book, but it was surprisingly easy to keep it all together. Some things were predictable; others not as apparent. It was a good read. I only question: Are all men this angry??? (Dominick and Ray especially....) The ending was as I'd hoped. I'd read Wally Lamb's stuff anyday.
Rating: Summary: Incredible! Highly readable. Amazing. A must-read. Review: Wally Lamb has surpassed his brilliance in SHE'S COME UNDONE. I can't say enough about this book. I just finished reading all 897 pages, and I want to pick it up and read it again and again. Touching, thought-provoking and unpredictable...it has all the makings of a masterpiece. I waited a year for this book to be published, and it was worth the wait. I'm going to recommend it to anyone who will listen to me. I look forward to Wally Lamb's next novel.
Rating: Summary: An excellent read - I couldn't put it down. Review: This is an excellent novel about the trials and tribulations of a pair of twin brothers, their mental and physical differences, and the problems they encounter during their lifetime. It is really three stories in one. One story involves the current "twin situation". The second story is a history of the upbringing and early lives of the twins, and the third story is the history of the twins' grandfather. At the completion of this novel you will feel you have a better understanding of what is important in life.
Rating: Summary: Never predictable. Must-read for people who like surprises. Review: What a great book! I never knew what to expect next and found myself always surprised. It allowed me to see how the events of our lives can shape us and how we must be able to forgive, let go, and move on. I loved his use of real-life current events and people. It made it that much more enjoyable. Thank you, Wally. This had to take forever to write, but it was worth it.
