Rating: Summary: An beautiful and moving story Review: This amazing and touching story explores family dynamics in an exceptional and engrossing way. Rarely does a story come along where the characters feel like friends and family and you laugh and cry along with them. Wally Lamb is perhaps one of the best and most honest writers we have today. I have already bought a copy of this book for everyone I love, I believe its message is eternal.
Rating: Summary: One of the most amazing books I have ever read!!!!! Review: This is one of the most truely complete novels I have read. It takes the reader on a journey that emcompasses turn of the century Italy to modern day America. The author has a terrific talent for developing characters, which allows the reader to really understand the emotions of the characters.
Rating: Summary: So compelling you'll find you can't put this book down. Review: This book was sent to me by my college best friend to read while recovering from surgery. When I first looked at the size of it I thought I would be lucky to finish it by the end of the summer. But 6 days later I finally put it to rest! Wally Lamb continue to write so that the reader feels he/she is experiencing everything in the first person. At times I found parts to be so disturbing I wanted to quit reading, only to find myself not able to put it down. His style of writing and the inter-weaving of the characters makes for excellent reading. I only hope it won't take Mr. Lamb another four years to produce such literary excellence.
Rating: Summary: AMAZINGLY ADDICTIVE-YOU DON'T WANT IT TO END Review: AFTER READING THOUSANDS OF BOOKS, I FEEL I HAVE EXPERIENCED A TRULY GIFTED AUTHOR. WHEN AN AUTHOR CAN DRAW YOU INTO THE STORY AND CONTROL YOUR EMOTIONS SUCH AS WALLY LAMB HAS DONE. HE MAKES YOU GO DEEP INTO YOUR OWN PAST AND HELPS YOU TO FIND ''THE EVIDENCE THAT GOD EXISTS IN THE ROUNDNESS OF THINGS''.
Rating: Summary: I felt like I was a part of this book! Review: It is not often that you find a book that allows you to feel for each and every character. This book does just that. When I was reading I was also feeling the pain of not only Dominick but of Thomas and their mother. I felt the same emotions that Dominick felt and I just could not put this book down. It is such a deeply written book, at times I forgot I was reading a book. It covered love, hate, joy and sorrow within it's 800 plus pages. I only hope I can find a book that can do the same for me again. I cried when I finished it and felt at a loss when I was done. Wally Lamb, a million thanks for moving me the way you did with this book. I am in awe of your talent!
Rating: Summary: Trying to depress us? Review: After reading, or trying to read, several of Ms. Winfrey's recommendations, I've noticed a pattern in her choices. I'm puzzled that they are unremittingly depressing. Mr. Lamb's book, I KNOW THIS MUCH IS TRUE, is no exception. His premise is intriguing; his writing is cogent; but it is such a downer! I don't expect life to be all joy, roses, and boxes of chocolate-covered cherries, but I think an occasional life-affirming book to punctuate the real tedium would be very thoughtful of Ms. Winfrey. Especially, since a lot of us already know too much about dysfunctional families.
Rating: Summary: Really, truly fabulous! Review: A good, long book for the summertime can be an almost religious experience. And, Lord have mercy, Wally Lamb is the Archbishop! (Once again.) This is a really great ride. I loved the weaving of the three, sometimes four different time periods of Dominick's life (and pre-life) going on. This is pure Wally Lamb with lines like: "Take it from the uncrazy twin -- the guy who beat the biochemical rap." And "March of 1970 was when Thomas's brain dropped him to his knees." Dropped him to his knees. What better way to describe schizophrenia. There were times I would forget this was a work of fiction. The characters are all so clear and bright, I felt at times this was all very, very real. This is a truly beautiful experience -- I know this much is true.
Rating: Summary: A mixed bag of emotions! Review: I could hardly wait to read this book as I enjoyed "She's Come Undone" so much. I was not disappointed and tore through the book in a week or so. Lamb's ability to make the reader want to pity the characters while at the same time want to laugh is incredible. So many times ,I found myself laughing and crying at the same time. Ocassionally, the flashbacks to the grandfather's past got wordy, but it always kept me hanging on to find out more. It is a touching piece about the relationship between siblings (twins). I highly recommend this book and cannot wait for Wally Lamb's next work.
Rating: Summary: A fabulous story! Review: I haven't been as stuck on a novel of this size since "Gone with the Wind." Wally Lamb takes the reader through Dominick Birdsey's life with a talent few authors can claim. Though I did not fall in love with any of the characters, I felt pity for Thomas, the schizophrenic brother, and pity for Ray, the stepfather who "did his best." For our hero, Dominick, I found myself rooting for his way out of the messes life tossed at him, and the ending of the book was not disappointing. I would recommend this book to everyone.
