Rating: Summary: Wally Lamb proves himself as a great author of the 1990's Review: Contemporary, fresh, tightly written in an epic scope--"I Know This Much Is True" will take you on a fascinating, aching emotional journey. As with "She's Come Undone," Lamb digs deep into all of his characters--really making them real and personal. I think this book deserves all the attention it gets and I can't wait for the next!
Rating: Summary: "Impossible to put down!!" Review: I picked up this 901 page book around 6 in the evening and did not put it down until early the next morning. This book delves into manyof the toughest topics in society today, such as mental illness, child abuse and grief) without leaving the reader unduly depressed or untouched. I believe a sure sign of an excellent book is that the reader actually misses the characters in the story once I have finished the book. And this book is one of a select few which has done just that.
Rating: Summary: a 1998 must read Review: This is by far the best book I have ever read. Lamb draws the reader in the very first pages. Although the book is lengthy an avid reader will find him or herself giving every spare moment, and then some, to reading this novel cover to cover. You will fall in love with the characters. The book is very obsessing, leaves you waiting for a next novel by Wally Lamb
Rating: Summary: Fascinating story full of characters I care about. Review: Great story told in a way which makes me wish for a happy ending. Cannot out the book down- don't pick it up if you have to go to work in the morning!
Rating: Summary: Stop me if you've heard this before... Review: ...identical twins, one mentally ill and suicidal, the other twin is a wise-cracking former teacher who quits that job after an emotional breakdown, Each twin has a borderline oedipal/hate relationship with their mother, an abusive father, etc., etc. Hmmm, could it be "Prince of Tides"? While this book wasn't nearly as emotionally involving nor thereby as good as "PoT", it was still a good summer read. I breezed through the 900 pages in a week. I'll probably skip "She's Come Undone" but I would certainly read Lamb's next offering.
Rating: Summary: Don't deny yourself the pleasure of this one. Review: The "truths" that Dominick learns are poignant and beautiful. If you must know what he knows is true, simply turn to the last page. But it would be a shame to miss the journey. The story searches the souls of many characters to get to the truths. It isn't always a pleasant trip, and at times it's clear that Dominick doesn't want to take it. But the reward at the end provides peace. Wally Lamb writes characters that you want to get to know--warts and all. If it takes another six years for him to write again it will be worth the wait!
Rating: Summary: I am half-way through and can't put it down. Review: Wally Lamb writes like he truely knows what it is like to be the brother of a sick sibling. I am the sister of a manic-depressive sister one year younger than I, and I know a lot of what he speaks in that department. It rings true for me. The feelings he expresses are devestatingly accurate. I am half-way through the book, and am having a hard time at certain passages because it brings up a rush of feelings for me in my own life with my sister. The things I missed out on, the sadness I have for her. The writing is sometimes a bit long-winded, but the ring of truth keeps me turning the pages. I want this man to find happiness. I care about him. Life is sometimes overwhelming for him, he missed out on a lot of security and happiness in his life. I can understand his bad choices. I will be sad when I finish reading it, but also relieved to not have to go through some of the agonies that are incurred by the characters. I have shed a few tears reading this book and expect to shed a few more by the time I am finished with it.
Rating: Summary: Awe struck Review: I Know This Much is True inspires profound thought, deep feeling and absolute awe. It will interrupt your life, keeping you reading till insane hours of the night and delving into your psyche the rest of your wakefullness. Detailed to perfection and related in such brutal honesty it will make you search yourself for answers, Wally Lamb has achieved the near impossible - outdoing himself.
Rating: Summary: Can one more thing happen to this guy? Review: I love the book. Very few authors have allowed their main characters (especially those telling the story in 1st person) to admit that they are total jerks and that they have faults and character flaws. This makes Dominick seem real. But, I'm only on page 470, and too much has happened to Dominick in a one-day period. It's interesting to read...like a movie...but, a bit far-fetched at times. I do like the dialog and character development.
Rating: Summary: Literature is Alive! Review: Wally Lamb's first book, She's Come Undone" was a treasure. "I Know This Much is True" has made me believe that TRULY great books are not just a reality in History and English Lit. I rank this book among the 5 best I have EVER read. It is a fiction treasure as well as a beautiful and sensitive rendering of forgiveness, the realities of mental illness, families, and spiritual growth. I have given it as a gift to everyone I know who has a love of books.
