Summary: One of my favorites from Lavyrle Spencer!
Review: I loved listening to the audio cassette recording of Small Town Girl the one that was read by Lavryle Spencer herself (I haven't listened to the one read by singer/actress Melissa Manchester), the story was wonderful my second favorite with Morning Glory being my #1 favorite. Small Town Girl is wonderful and is about Tess a famous Country singer who comes home to take care of her mother after she has surgery on her hip and runs into Kenny from across the street the guy who was a nerd in high school and had a crush on her but she being one of the cool kids didn't want any part of Kenny and ignored him but now Kenny is handsome and no longer the gawky geek she remembers. I liked most of the characters in this story, Tess, her Mom Mary and her sister Renee, and Kenny and his daughter Casey, the only character I didn't like too much was Judy the other sister of Tess who was a little too bitter and a little too jealous of Tess, I know Judy had a lot of things to deal with like taking care of her own family as well of have taking care of Mary before Tess came home but really did she need to be so petty and catty and rude? Anyway I liked this audio cassette recording so much I went to a used book store and bought the book but have't read it yet but since I liked the audio recording I certainly have to like the book too.

Summary: Fabulous and thoroughly enjoyable
Review: This was the first book that I have read by Spencer and I couldn't put it down. I've read and re-read it and enjoy the well-crafted turn of phrases with each new read. The characters are great, their dialogue fun to follow and their developing love wonderful. There were several times when I felt my heart clench while reading a particularly lovely part of the book. I've tried other Spencer books since and, although each has been enjoyable, this is my all time favorite.

Summary: country superstar finds "stars" in her own hometown!
Review: From a small town girl to a superstar country singer, Tess McPhail has it all! Million dollar home, successful singing career and the ambition to make it in the big city "lights". Returning home to care for her mother wasn't part of the plan, but Tess soon finds another task she didn't bargin for. An old schoolmate and "the boy next door" proves that the "ugly duckling" she couldn't stand can turn into a hansome prince right before her very eyes. Tess must now make a decision on whether she fit love into HER already full life or let her knight get away! Another heart tugging novel!

Summary: Disappointed
Review: I read another of LaVyrle Spencer's books before, and really loved it (Twice Loved), so I started this one with high expectations.

The writing was fluid, the characters were interesting, but I just couldn't get past the idea that the heroine stole the hero away from another woman (whom he had been seeing for 8 years -- and was happy with until the millionaire superstar heroine came onto the scene.)

The hero didn't enter his new relationship cleanly, either. There were a few instances of kissing (one while rolling on the grass) while his girlfriend was kept in the dark.

I don't know about other readers, but I can't admire a hero who cheats on his girlfriend, or a heroine who steals a man from another woman.

I have another book by Spencer waiting for me to read, and I don't know if I'll bother.

Summary: I Loved It
Review: Being from Minnesota, I have read many books by Ms. Spencer, but have to say this book, Then Came Heaven and That Camden Summer are my absolute favorites. I loved them so much, I now own all three (to be read and re-read). They are worth it!

Summary: Great Beach Book
Review: This book is a light and fun read. I would definetly reccommend that you read it on the beach this summer. It is basically, a romance novel with funny and offbeat characters. By reading this book I did learn a little bit about the country music industry. Heck, I even started listening to country music!

Summary: Light reading but entertaining
Review: Spencer's books have always been hit or miss for me, and this one was a hit. The story was simple and the characters sometimes veered towards stereotypes, but overall I enjoyed this book quite a bit. By the end of the book, I felt like I knew Tess as a friend, and I enjoyed the concert scene with the backstage action going on. I also liked the way Tess handled her fans throughout the book, it gives some perspective of what celebrities are really thinking when they meet fans.

My one small complaint is that I cannot stand the name Kenny, and I just can't believe a grown man still would be going by that name. Maybe it's a Southern thing? I'm from up north, so I really don't know.

Also thought the Judy character could have had a more sympathetic treatment, but there's usually one character in Spencer's books that gets loaded with bad traits and no redeeming characteristics. Another small point though and not that big of a detriment to the overall book.

A good light read, one of her better books.

Summary: Good book for romantics & country music fans
Review: If Reba McIntyre doesn't jump on this book and make a t.v. movie, she's missing a great opportunity--I felt in a way like I was reading about her! Although, Lavyrle Spencer's writing reminds me of something from a "True Romance" magazine, the plot about a country music star was entertaining.

Summary: One of the best!
Review: I am a BIG fan of Ms. Spencer having read most of the books, but was a little hesistant with reading the newer books. Starting with this one maybe because I was afriad it would be as "juicy" as some of the other books. The main thought which made me read it was, "This is a Lavyrle Spencer book, it has to be good." Boy was I ever correct! I enjoyed this book so much I read it in two days! The plot was wonderful, the tension (not only with Mac and Kenny--but with Mac and her sister as well), the clever writing. All these ingridients came together to creat an excellent novel. I'm not a country music person, but I learned a few things in the book about music I never would have thought about. As always Lavyrle put us inside the character to let us know their thoughts and feelings. An added plus was the funny "thoughts" that ran through both Mac and Kenny when they were apart or together. I would highly recommend this book to anyone, it makes enjoyable reading and you might find yourself chuckling when you read some of the antics told in the book. Defenitely a great read!
