Rating: Summary: THE BEST EVER! Review: I have to just say this was. hands down the best action book I've ever read. It took you by the seat of your pants from page one and didn't let go. If you're a fan of Cussler or Clancy, let me tell you that Matthew J. Reilly is the next big thing! I feel this is the the new era of adventure writing. Read it!
Rating: Summary: Nonstop action...a great book! Review: A squad of marines in antartica and an amazing scientific discovery make for a great setting of a great book. I couldn't put it down! Sure, some things are a little unreal, but that's part of the fun. Nobody said it was a non-fiction book. I highly recommend this one to anyone who likes fast-paced, action-packed books.
Rating: Summary: It's action, not super-realism Review: Those who say this book isn't realistic are missing the boat entirely, it's not meant to be. Ice Station is to books what an action movie like Die Hard is to movies - escapist entertainment. I lost count of the number of times I found myself thinking something like 'no way... oh that was so cool' while reading this book.Possibly the best thing about this book is the action simply doesn't stop. The first bullets are fired about 10-15 pages in, and from then on it is one action scene to another. I read in an interview the author wanted to write a book with essentially no 'down time' in it, and well, he certainly succeeded.
Rating: Summary: A sad moment in the history of publishing! Review: This is probably the first time in my live that I'll return a book. This action thriller by Matt Reilly is not that much different in content than Tom Clancy novels when it comes to plot and characters...BUT the author essentially writes content wise below the level of comic strips. Most of the technical details are pure fantasy (e.g. scuba diving without proper gear beyond 600 ft. of water, hand grenades with liquid nitrogen etc) and therefore rob the tight action of any connection to reality. It reminded me sometimes of some thirteen year old kid that is making up stories from his last vacation...it is THAT bad. Most of the more challenging feats are so unrealistic that your mind simple refuses to believe the suggested fantasy and therefore the book fails miserably. If there was a TOP 10 of Worst Books...it would certainly deserve to be in it! Editors Cate Paterson, Pete Wolverton and Madonna Duffy have not done their job here. St.Martin's Press must be desperate to bring this book onto the American market.
Rating: Summary: So little story, so much action! Review: First the reader gets interested in this "alien spaceship"-topic, then he has to go through some 100 + pages of violence. Like this it gets on. It reminds me of the "straight to video" flics where they could not afford Steven Seagull. Much too much mindless and very farfetched action without any plotpoint (flying an aircraft through a tunnel in an iceberg that topples over... please! )
Rating: Summary: Great pacing and action. I'd call it a winner. Review: I had more fun reading this book than I've had with other stories in a while. The action sequences are very well paced - not too rushed, not too much detail. The characterization was good, telling a story with this much happening doesn't need the analysis of jury selection. There was abundant fiction regarding the technology and heroics but the story kept going through that (there is more to 3,000 foot diving than nitrogen pills and warm wetsuits and though I'm not bothered by our hero's handling of the sub, chances are he never would have encountered it). My rule on these items is: I like the tech discussions to be well researched and accurate. If a story is good enough to keep me from fussing over these missing details, it's good. This one kept me from doing that. Buy the book, it's a fun read.
Rating: Summary: Pure unadulterated fun Review: The phrase "rollicking yarn" seems to have been defined preternatuarlly to describe this book based on the attempt by world governments to obtain the technology hidden inside a possible spaceship buried deep inside the ice sheets of Antarctica. The action just does not let up and the book is just impossible to put down, it can easily be read in one day given the frenetic action sequences even though it is 384 pages long, such is its enjoyment. Pure unadulterated fun. I agree wholeheartedly with one reviewer who noted that even with its inaccuracies this book is meant to be simply enjoyed to the max with nothing held back. It does this very well indeed and would make or rather redefine the action blockbuster if made into a movie. Why this hasn't already been done is a mystery given that its success is just about guaranteed.
Rating: Summary: Superb Review: This is the very best book I have read in ages. Well done Matthew Reilly Where are Richard Donner and Joel Silver? This HAS to be the next big blockbuster movie. Suggestion : use Timothy Dalton for the part of Brigadier General Trevor Barnaby
Rating: Summary: HORRIBLE! Review: Don't waste your time. It is a waste of paper. The only thing the book has going for it is that the "action" never stops. The "action" is also unbelievable. A fair plot ruined and gone terribly bad.
Rating: Summary: A book for entertainment's sake. Review: Many people have written similar reviews about how 'the characters have no depth, the storyline is nowhere near original and half the stuff just wouldn't happen." Well, when what you're thinking at the end of the prologue is 'What's going to happen now?' and your thoughts at the end of the first chapret are 'I wish I hadn't asked!' how can there be time for a lengthy, dusruptive explanation about a characters background when it dosent play a part? When it comes to escapism, Matthew Reilly is a master, and when it comes to his characters and plot -- after all it IS 'popular FICTION'
