Summary: Propaganda--BUT WORTH IT
Review: Some may say of John gibson's new book "Hating America" that it is more right wing bile from those who support "Cowboy" Bush. In one way they're right--BUT FOR THE MOST PART THEY ARE WRONG!!! I am a conservative myself--a reformed liberal who went to a college that taugh me how to hate America and the systems she has and what they stand for. But ten years ago, while I was undergoing surgery to remove my appendix of all times--things changed in me. From graduation to right now, I have changed and 9/11/01 put everything in 30 slabs of cement!

Reading Gibby's story about his friend surviving the attacks was an eye-opening way to get things started. And to those who hate on this book--I'LL GLADLY PAY FOR YOUR TICKETS TO CUBA, CHINA, INDONESIA, AFGHANISTAN OR ANY OTHER COUNTRY THAT DARES TO HATE US!!!

WHY ARE WE SO HATED--ONE WORD SOME OF YOU LIBERALS CAN'T AND WILL NEVER, EVER, EVER UNDERSTAND--FREEDOM!!!!!

I would recommend this book for a political class or journalism--in addition to a healthy diet from Fox News Channel--but to me that would be wishful thinking!!!

Thank You John--and I'll continue to watch "Big Story" and FNC!

Summary: HATED FOR WHAT WE STAND FOR....FREEDOM
Review: "a reader from Seattle", April 24, 2004, would be better named "Clueless in Seattle". Mr. Gibson hits the nail right on the head. I have traveled and found that Americans are hated in a good part of Europe, South America, Canada and the Carribean. We are hated because of the jealousy over our freedom, defense of freedom and our diverse lifestyles. It may be time to confine our vacations within our borders and keep our money home. That would be an investment in America and send a loud and clear message to our detractors. I've seen enough of the world and now wish to see all of America and share my money with my fellow Americans. Thank you John Gibson for putting it in print and Amazon for affording the forum.

Summary: The World's true colors towards America: green w/envy & hate
Review: First off, to the reviewer from NY. Only a flaming liberal (such as yourself) would find FNC ridiculous. You don't like it? Either be quite or move to Canada...or better yet, France! Secondly, I recommend this book to everyone who wishes to know how the world really feels about us.

Summary: A Must-Read For All Americans
Review: I found John Gibson's book compelling and amazing. Perhaps you already know that much of the world today, at least the world's media outlets, have it in for the United States. It is important to see it spelled out with specific examples, history, and in context as John Gibson does here. We, the average guys, just don't have access to this important side of the story that's being written in the war on terrorism. What upset me deeply was learning of the direct complicity that Canada's prime minister, Jacques Chretien, had in the deaths of American soldiers in Afghanistan. Canada is our friend, right? Just gotta love those fellow "Canadians", even if they are al-Queda terrorists. What is wrong with you?
It is especially disheartening, however, to hear S. Korea say anything but"thanks", as they owe their lives and country to Americans who gave their lives in the cause of freedom, stemmed the tide of communism and totalitarianism on that pennisula, and today keep them from hell's forward march by the North Koreans. My father served in the Korean War, my grandfather went to France in WWI, my brother will always be a Marine. America may have its problems, but it is full of the greatest people on earth. We have been willing to fight against dictators and for freedom everywhere. It's shocking how ungrateful and miserable citizens in places like France, Italy and Belgium are now towards the U.S. John Gibson's book is an eye-opener.

Summary: A knee-jerk manifesto that scared me to death
Review: Gibson captured how miserable it felt to be American and victimized after 9/11 and so globally misunderstood. We were devastated by 9/11. We had a right to be. Maybe we went too far to draw a line in the sand and I was kind of put off by this writers rants on justification for overthrowing Hussein but I was amazed by what I learned having picked up this hefty 300 plus page book about global journalism.

I picked this up because I too feel emotional about being hated so much just because I'm proud of being American. Gibson is a Fox news pundit and found so many examples of Anti- Americanism in international media channels I had chills. Seriously it frightened me. I'm not proud of everything my leaders do all the time but I'm really proud to live here and be a citizen here and have such a strong and proud history here. I love being American but now I'm afraid of crossing a border.

Before I read this book I was aware of the anti-American sentiment to a certain extent and believed it would even itself out and we would once again be welcomed back abroad after our tourism dollars in other coutries dried up because we weren't traveling and spending our American dollars elsewhere but now I'm not so sure.

Gibson found examples of hatred we already expected from Arabs and the French - but he provides many examples of Germans even the British and Canadian, Egyptians and other countries that didn't support the American invasion and lumped us altogether as just a hateable people. How can you hate someone you don't even know? How can you hate anyone at all?

I guess it's sad that after we have given so many American lives throughout history to help our friends that now we're hated for simply defending ourselves in an admittedly overbearing way. I'm not a pro-Iraq war American by any stretch of the imagination but after reading what so many foreign journalists wrote I was angry to be so venomously hated when I'm simply a peaceful person and most Americans I know are exactly the same way.

Summary: No Good
Review: This guy offers nothing new to teh current discourse. Apparently, anyone who questions what America does hates us. People have a right to their own opinion, so I guess one has to respect this guy's, but if you are going to read conservative propaganda, find some that's better than this.

Summary: Gibson and I never fought in a war, but we support that stuf
Review: I, like John Gibson, have never served in the military, and quite frankly, never even considered serving. But we are in complete support of our fellow Americans who are fighting for our freedom and security so that we may enjoy the freedom to speak out on cable TV. As John Gibson points out, we saved that sorry nation France in 2 world wars. By "we" of course, I don't mean John Gibson and myself because, as I said before, we have never given any thought to serving. But by "we", I mean that large group of brave Americans that we are not directly related to, who laid down their lives so that Gibson and myself can pursue our careers and satisfy our material desires in this, the greatest nation on earth. And look what France does in return. After all the sacrifices that we (again, by "we", I don't mean Gibson and myself, because neither of us did anything for France) made for France, they turn around and criticize what we're doing in Iraq. Obviously, they hate us because we (now here, by "we", I DO mean John and I and all the other wonderful people who think like us, because we are great)are so great, with our great cable TV shows and wonderful books and stuff, that those thankless French will never be able to produce.

Summary: Why do we expect to be loved?
Review:

"Tariq Ali, a young writer gained fame in the early 1970s decrying American policy in Vietnam. By 2003, he had lost none of his youthful anti-Americanism. 'Some of the Bush idealogues in the media compare Washington to ancient Rome. It is a permissable fantasy, but they should remember that (a) the Romans never expected to be loved and (b) that Rome, too, fell.'" (page 70)

There is truth in that statement, as Gibson points out, much as we hate to hear it. Americans want to be loved. When the Brits ruled the world, they never expected to be admired--only obeyed and, perhaps, feared. We, on the other hand, want desperately to be liked. But the hand that holds out the food, and rules, is usually hated, and often bitten. That is just a fact of life that one must expect.

John Gibson has written an awesome compilation of facts here supporting his thesis that we, the most powerful nation on earth, are vastly despised, despite all of the sacrifices we have made in blood and money in the last century to make the world better. Are we surprised then, that France, whom we have saved from the despotism and horror of two world wars, is among our most ardent foes? Or the Palestinians, whom we have striven to achieve justice for during a couple of generations, holds an abiding hatred for us? Or the Germans, Belgians, South Koreans, Spanish, Italians--all of Europe (for whom we have bled copiously), in fact, hold us in contempt or, at least distrust us?

Even the Brits, our most trusted allies, look down on us as springing from an inferior civilization.

As they said in the Second World War, while we were bleeding for their sake, it was said that the greatest fault of the Yanks were that we were, "Overfed, overpaid, oversexed and over here." No gratitude, even then in the midst of battle.

But, when all is said and done, at least for the moment (which is about as long as any political system lasts in the overall scheme of things), as Gibson points out we are the most powerfful nation on earth, militarily and economically. We have, at least for now, achieved that status while France, Spain, Italy and Russia have declined until they are no longer the masters of their own fate: the victims of socialism. Even the proud British Empire, upon which it was once said that "the sun never sets," is now a mere shadow of its former glory.

The United States of America may not be far behind, as the ugly head of socialism rears its head, replacing our constitutional freedoms to a greater and greater extent. But for now, at least, we are the force with which to be reckoned--the one of which to be jealous--we are the source of power.

It is not, therefore, ours to be loved. Rather, it is ours to be respected, if for no other reason than our strength. That must be enough, for now. They will, no doubt, gloat when we fall, and perhaps when and if we are as weak as they, then they will love us. Doubtful? Who knows?

This is a fine book, psychoanalyzing our avowed enemies. and explaining how they got to be that way. I recommend it. John Gibson is the host of Fox News Channel's The Big Story.

God Bless America.

Summary: Pedantic but true
Review: Having traveled the world I've seen for myself the double edged sword of anti-Americanism. Its taken for granted that most of the world press, especially in Europe is anti-American. When it comes to the actual people abroad many support America, within certain limits. The problem is jealousy and this book lambastes them for this. People simply have to walk down their streets and see Coca-Cola and McDonalds and they find themselves angry at the 'Yankee'. Probably the worst thing is that all the countries America has really put its neck on the line for hate America the most, whereas the countries that we actually bombed into submission like Japan and Germany are full of people who love us. Irony? Is it because we first saved the world from Fascism and then Communism? Is it perhaps that hating America by foreigners is not just a sport, as claimed here, but is actually due to Americas own self hate.

This was the seminal problem with this otherwise uproarious account, it didn't probe the truth behind the hatred. Beyond jealousy the single greatest reason that foreigners hate America is because we go abroad and we tell them how and why to hate America. Fellow Americans like Chomsky and Soros spread anti-American venom throughout the world and then its ironic to go abroad and simply hear their ideas parroted. But when foreigners say things like 'Bush is the oil president' they are just parroting what they have read in the American press. This book completely misses the boat on this essential truth. Most foreigners wouldn't have as much to say against America if we Americans weren't so self-critical. Nevertheless this is a wonderful and necessary account.

Summary: Seen the Movie.....
Review: A few of these reviews have credibility problems to say the least. I love the liberal's excruciating denial of reality. This book is a MUST read for anyone wanting a glimpse into the visceral hatred many in the world have of America. More to the point...CONSERVATIVE AMERICA!
I spent 22 years in the military and over half of that time was outside the U.S. I vividly remember living in England when Reagan was president and watched the daily lambasting of America by the "elite" European media. Yes...nothing like watching America being bashed every single day in the news. Can ANYONE here imagine watching Good Morning America or reading their local paper and seeing only a constant drum beat of hate towards Canada or France? We may dislike some of their policies, but we are not enamored with an obsessive hatred towards them. It would get a little old hearing or reading this day-in and day-out. Not to mention a waste of brain cells. So WHY does the rest of the world spend SO much time dedicated to bashing America? Rather childish, but obviously very sporting for them.
What Gibson describes is not some dreamed up right-wing delusion. I witnessed first hand this hatred throughout the 80's and 90's. I remember how happy I was when I moved from a local village in England onto the Military Base and was able for the first time in 3 years to get CNN news. Compared to the BBC, CNN was the epitome of conservatism.
The only ones who deny Gibson's findings are those living in their elite world. I would challenge any American to pay close attention to European or Canadian news media during a visit or better, live in Europe or Canada for 1 year and then read Gibson's book. Try then to dispute Mr. Gibson. This is a MUST read!
