Summary: An opinion from an European..
Review: First things first... I love America and Americans...
I would like you to read this with an open mind...
If you dont believe my words (comming straight from an European), why should you believe John Gibson words?
As every propaganda book it distorts reality so that it can pass an idea or argument. The truth is what John Gibson has done is nothing but picking what "suited" his argument in order to pass the idea that theres wide spread hate towards america even in allied nations in Europe, and other parts of the globe (Canada and so on)...
That is totally untrue. VERY VERY far from reality...

Theres a MAJOR difference between hating america and disagreeing with one or other political topic. Theres a big big difference between not supporting war in Iraq, and being anti-american...
Im not saying that there arent anti-americans in the world...They exist...but from my perspective and im writing about what i know, theres no "wide spread" anti-americanism in Europe or any allied nations...In fact people may disagree in some points but they pretty much love america. THEY REALLY DO... you may find political radicals in europe just like they exist there in america.. (John Gibson may be one ...dont know)
But thats politics and we know it...
What i do think is that this John Gibson, clearly trying to build a case for the republicans, is actually trying to create the opposite reaction in the american people...making americans put an "armor"... and making them disregard anything people outside america may say, because as he says theyre anti-americans...
His building the roots for americans to hate others...
For example...He states that many nations are jealous of US freedoms...And gives as example nations like Belgium, he even mentions UK. This is the biggest lie ever...Our nations have democratic systems, just like the US... we share pretty much the same constitution rights, and so on. But this isnt just on paper..The people mentality reflect this...Why would we be jealous if we have similiar systems, similiar rights and so on?
Because the US is the biggest super power?
Cant those who believe this John Gibson see , that for Europeans we pretty much prefer that US is the big name in town than other non democratic blocks? Cant you guys see that we Europeans and many other nations in the world (SK, Japan, Canada) see your tv programs, watch your movies, drink and eat your food, visit your websites, play your games, and so on. If there was wide spread anti-americanism in Europe,Canada SK , Japan and many other such nations would this be possible?
For me the worst part of the book was when he says that there were people in Europe, Canada and so on that said the Americans deserved 9/11. How can he say that? How can he? People passed all day watching the tely in disgust of what happen. FOR THE FIRST TIME in history NATO nations invoked the "if one is attacked all are attacked" ... there were manifistations of people around the world in support for the american people... minutes of silence, and much more...
Yet he grabs some lunatic words, and claims its wide spread..
He talks about our media. Well i think americans can check that out...visit our news sites, see our tv...and tell me if what he says is true...
Some media may be biazed due to lobby interests, but the same thing happens in america as we all know it.

And to end ...
Who do you believe? One guy with an agenda...or an european civilian.

and ask yourself one question ...
WHY WOULD AN EUROPEAN WRITE SUCH A BIG POST, IF HE WASNT WORRIE D WITH WHAT AMERICANS MIGHT THINK AFTER READING THIS BOOK

Summary: A brilliant analysis
Review: The America-hate in the world has reached a level that is perplexing and somewhat disturbing to most Americans. John Gibson has cleverly compiled views from abroad, summarized war-on-terror facts, and put together a brilliant, brilliant analysis that clearly shows with whom the pathology lies. An outstanding read. Thank you, Mr. Gibson.

Summary: Ridiculous!
Review: As bad, if not worse than Fox News. I do not recommend this book at all. I wonder if he gets paid for his propoganda or is it out of fear. You'd probably get a more 'fair and balanced' view from a toddler.

Summary: I'm a registered Republican, I voted for Bush, and I watch
Review: Fox News Channel, CNN, and listen to NPR, Clear Channel, and Air America. I like to keep all my bases covered. I am also sad to report that I am increasingly alienated from conservatives. The more I learn about Neo-cons, the less in common they have with actual conservatism. This freedom they speak of seems only to apply to themselves, and their rhetoric more often argues against freedom than for it.

To those who love this book, I can say that you should probably travel a bit to find out how accurate it is. I traveled Europe for five weeks last summer, and found most Europeans to be very fond of Americans, but very bitter towards our President. Unilateralism may sound great here, but to them it seems like arrogance. As far as our citizens are concerned, most Europeans felt the Americans who came to experience the culture, meet the locals, and attempt their language were great. However, those who treat their homeland like a Club Med resort are reviled. Just remember that you are a representative of our country when you travel, and you are a visitor.

In regards to the coming election, I ask all of my fellow Americans to objectively analyze their president and his opponent. Please utilize all the freedom of the presses that America provides to make your decision. If all you do is watch or listen to one news source, I'd rather you didn't vote. You're only getting a piece of the pie, and chances are not a very accurate one at that.

Summary: A Timely Reminder of America's Greatness
Review: Mr. Gibson tells it like it is. And some people will have a problem with that -- but, hey, that's life.

He's straight shooter.

Gibson has uncovered the frankly disturbing truth that there are people around the world who say negative things about the United States.

He even makes an air tight case that there are people who habitually disagree with Republican policies who live outside the USA -- people who are not even American citizens! How dare they criticize our beloved country when they won't even come here to live so that patriotic Americans can abuse them with epithets and tell them to get the hell out of our country.

I was a bit taken aback when I read some of the vicious quotes.

Like this one -- from an Egyptian writer who said "America is a declining country filled with overweight people in deep debt without medical insurance or much hope for the future, other than winning the scratch-off lottery or getting on American Idol." What's he talking about? As Gibson points out -- at least we have a highly rated TV show named AMERICAN Idol -- do you see any shows called NORTH KOREAN IDOL or AXIS OF EVIL Idol? Hardly. Once again -- the US of A leads the way.

Kudos to Gibson for telling like it is.

Summary: Sinking Like A Rock
Review: Sales of this book are sinking like a rock, due to John's faulty and simplistic premise that we are hated because we are good and the rest of the world is evil. Could not our ill-advised foreign policy have played a role? How about the fact that in the past we have supported some of the most barbaric dictators when doing so supported our interests (re: Saddam Hussein). But such honest and critical evaluation is way beyond the capacity of this author and his intended audience. So its back to the FAUX NEWS CHANNEL for John where his simplistic message is truely appreciated.

Summary: 70% of these reviewers do not honestly critique this book!
Review: Isn't great to choose sides either liberal or conservative and then state your party line instead of providing an honest critque of this new book by John Gibson?

I felt that the book gives very clear and factual information backing up the claim that many in the world hate America, and a good explanation as to why this is. If you want to sum up the "why" we are hated into one or two words or sentences (like a good many of the Amazon reviewers have opted to do) you will miss some real insight and perspective on this complex and emotionally charged subject.

Do I believe (almost 35 percent of the reviews here) that the author misses the point that the world hates George W. Bush instead of the American people and therefore the book is a garbage read and only worth a one star review? No!

Do I believe that there are a lot of people that are envious of the wealth and power that our country has been blessed with and has worked very hard for? Yes, they are out there. And this book brings the attitudes and mindset of these individuals into greater clarity and understanding.

I see this same attitude almost every day here my city. People that see someone that has "more" than them, and hating them because of it. The fact that many are willing to kill someone because they are envious is a story that has been replayed time and time again throughout history.

Hey, if your mind is made up, I don't want to confuse you with the facts! This book looks at the issue with a certain measure of political bias (Gibson is a Fox news conservative journalist) but I feel it is worth reading for it's perspective and attempt to shed more light on the "America Haters."

Knowing the "why" of a particular matter is an important first step in DOING something about it. Gibson provides well researched arguments backed by solid sources which form a strong foundation for his conclusions. I welcome reading a different book from the liberal side that deals with this same issue. If it exists, I haven't found it yet.

I liked the writing style, and found that like LA LAKERS guard Kobe Bryant, Gibson could be misunderstood for being a bit of an egotist. Oftentimes people that are passionate about something (basketball in Bryant's case) can be misperceived as being arogant, when in fact, they are simply exceptional at what they do, or highly knowledgeable about the subject. Gibson impressed me as being the later.

As for the reviewers who saw Hating America as essentially a political sales pitch, I don't see many of you providing suggestions for alternate books which deal with this subject from a non political perspective. If someone would like to provide some titles, I would gladly give them a read.

To sum it up, not a flawless book, but certainly worth a four star review.

Summary: excellent book
Review: After reading the comments from A reader from St. Louis, MO it's easy to see why he doesn't understand the logic of this book - because s/he doesn't simply can't think logically. It's not hard to see why other countries hate us; not one has the freedoms and rights and opportunites we in the USA have. Why does reader from St. Louis think so many immigrants keep coming to this country? To blame our foreign policy for the hatred directed at us is illogical and ridiculous. Most countries are simply jealous that we don't need them, but they need us. Without our help, and the money we sent, to rebuild Europe after after WWII, Europe wouldn't be where it is now. Without the help we've given our allies over the years, more countries in Europe would be speaking a different language than they do now, especially France, who pretty much welcomed Hitler with open arms at one point. This is an excellent book that that all should read, and reader in St. Louis should do a some reading about our own history before making comments about things he apparently knows little about.

Summary: Hated for our freedoms?
Review: I don't get it. I have read this book twice now and it is just not logical. To say we are hated for our freedoms doesn't make sense. It is much more likely that we are hated due to inept and corrupt foreign policy. Our intentions may be honorable, but we come down on the wrong side every time. Go back as far as you want and this is a consistant pattern. In Cuba, we supported a corrupt dictator, Batista, who was routed from power by Castro. Evil or not Castro rose to fill a vaccuum and had popular support. The same could be said for the Shah in Iran, Diem in Vietnam, and Saddam in Iraq. Initially we supported him because he served our interests and to hell with the Iraqi people. We were so certain he had WMDs because we gave them to him. Now we wonder why we are hated and not being greeted with flowers?

In this tome of a book, Gibson uses a simplistic, self serving, and downright stupid thesis, that we are hated because the rest of the world is inherently evil and we are inherently good. He is attempting to sell a book based on simple sound bites which has instant appeal to his audience. Did't work this time. Sales of this book are sinking faster than the Titanic.
