Rating: Summary: The power of one! Review: This book has inspired me to take action on issues I am in total disagreement with. I no longer feel helpless.
Rating: Summary: How to Get Active in Your Community Review: This book gives you the courage and direction to take action in your own community, rather than waiting in the wings. Hurray for Moveon!
Rating: Summary: Simple things you can do... nothing radical! Review: Despite what some of the reactionary right-wing "reviews" indicate, this book is NOT filled with radical and nefarious plans to undermine society. It is filled with simple, honest ways to get involved in the political process, like writing your congressman, talking to your neighbors, volunteering for a candidate, encouraging people to vote -- the stuff that REALLY scares right-wingers. The right-wing hate machine wants to keep citizens OUT of the process so they can be free to further plunder the US treasury, drain YOUR social security funds, and promote worldwide hegemony, all in the name of "fighting terror." This book is about doing your small part to counteract the "dirty tricks" of the RNC with the one thing they can't stand: truthful discussion and honest campaigning. But on the other hand, this book is completely non-partisan, in that every technique and idea could apply to any political party or cause you care to support. It's about restoring democracy in America, period. For the record, I bought this book and have read numerous selections from it, unlike many of the kneejerk negative "reviews" on here posted before the book was even available.
Rating: Summary: Book tells you HOW Review: After reading Michael Moore's books and getting worked up over how the country is being sold down the river, at last....a book that gives you concrete tools to DO something about it. BRAVO!
Rating: Summary: Dumb Review: People with half a brain could figure out better ways than the ideas in the book!
Rating: Summary: 50 Ways to Corrode our Political System. Review: The most widely used word in the entire book is "empowered". One comes away from reading this book wondering if it is really a self-help book for those with low self-esteem. Some of the entries simply smack of stupidity--for example one young woman goes on for some length about how she is helping the democratic process by meeting with a Senator--unfortunately the Senator was not available for the meeting--but nevertheless she felt empowered and so all is well. In another essay a woman asks her daughter to vote in the election as a favor to her (the mother). That her daughter remains politically ignorant is not important. What is important is that the "right" candidate gets elected--of course that would be the candidate that this woman supports. This same woman then encourages the rest of us to ask those who do not ordinarily vote to vote for our candidates as a "favor". And these people are supposed to be our role-models? Although MoveOn tries very hard to appear nonpartisan the stories and advice are all clearly aimed at the left. And to be fair there is enjoyment for those of us a tad right of the political spectrum, it is just that enjoyment takes the form of laughs, and disbelief. Other than giggling at some of the more perverse stories, there isn't much for a conservative. In many ways my reading of this book was disingenuous since I clearly was not going to like the political agenda, nevertheless even I was shocked at overall effect: fifty ways to do things politically that are at the very least ineffective, and at the most horribly corrosive to our political system.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful instruction manual for left wing fascists Review: Nothing new here but the standard rants from fans of Noam Chomsky and the Islamofacists.
Rating: Summary: Not a book any patriots will need Review: You know how kids will put a comic book inside a more serious sounding magazine to make them look like they are being intellectual or productive. Well, this book's cover is serious sounding, but inside is all comic book (though not funny in the least). It's amusing though how American America-Haters are so intimidated by being labeled as such they find the need to publish a book to prove they are not America-Haters. Patriots instinctively know how to support their country in time of need. They don't need no stinkin' book, to paraphrase Cheech and Chong. But, even for those not too imaginative, there are many things one can do to support the country without directly supporting a political party one disagrees with. THAT is the American way. This book supplies none of these ideas. Instead, it betrays its very title and urges many activities that only pull down American and bring harm to our troops. Clearly this book is meant only for those weak principled people so conflicted with their hate for America and guilt for hating their own country that they must read a book to prove they don't hate it to compensate. It would be more honest, however, if the potential reader bought a copy of something on Fidel Castro's "top books to read" list.
Rating: Summary: Not Shocking Review: In a series of short essays written by ordinary people, this book offers many ideas on how Americans can actively participate in the electoral process. "50 Ways . . ." is informative, not shocking, a quick read, and rooted in fact, not emotion. Folks from any political affiliation would learn a lot by reading this book, so I'm glad that the ones who vilify it without even having read it, don't.
Rating: Summary: If only we could give negative stars... Review: Best tip on loving your country: Actively oppose moveon.org's agenda. Reason for anonymity - have you ever been the target of these hatefilled people's wrath?
