Rating: Summary: They don't get any better Review: This is by far Loretta Chase's best book, and one of my all time favorites. The heroine is strong and independent, and for once it is the guy who is the emotional basket case. Put this book at the top of your "To Read" list, you won't be sorry.
Rating: Summary: Wow! You must read this book! Review: Wow! This is an amazing story. I could go on and on about it, but everyone else has said everything I could. Let me sum it up in one sentence: Buy it for the glove scene! Wow!
Rating: Summary: Don't let the title put you off Review: You won't be able to resist reading this book again and again. The heroine is not only beautiful but smart, strong and gives as good as she gets. Funny, seductive, sexy banter between Jess and Dain grab you immediately. Think of a sexy Hepburn/Tracy combination. WOW! And thank you Loretta Chase for not following the usual formula!
Rating: Summary: Surprise Review: I ordered this book a while ago and was a little put off by the stereotyped cover, so I postponed reading it. What a surprise. This is my first Loretta Chase story, but it won't be my last.Lord Dain (rhymes with Cain - fitting, I think) is the tormented beast. Jessica is his beautiful redemption. But what a wild ride to get there! I have no doubt that in the hands of a less gifted writer, this twist on the old fairy tale story would have come off as stupid, but I think LC has a gift for characterization; I miss the hero and heroine already, having just finished the book. I also liked her prologue - too many authors don't take the time to set the stage for their characters' conflicts, or try to do so only through brief references in the middle of the plot. Ms. C. had my attention from page one as she drew Dain larger than life, and then pitted him against a heroine who is firmly grounded in reality. No pouting, no head-tossing, no frippery, no sexual neurosis for Jessica! Dain's and Jessica's relationship (humor, arguments, and all) was so well developed and lucidly described, that I felt like I was watching a real couple struggle against their attraction for one another. I'm so glad I've discovered this author - now if I can just find her other novels....
Rating: Summary: Lord of Scoundrels Meets His Match! Review: One of my all-time favorite romances, and if you could see my book room, you'd understand the strength of that recommendation. Tortured hero who's an unapologetic rake and never claimed to be a "gentleman" meets his match in the fiery Jessica Trent. He compromises her then refuses to marry her, and she takes matters into her own hands in a scene that had me laughing till my sides ached! So why is it that this robust, virile womanizer can't seem to consummate his marriage? You'll have to read it to find out, but you'll take great pleasure in this fabulous journey. A must-read for anyone looking for complex characters, thoroughly interesting plot, mouth-watering love scenes and, with the ending, a sense that all is right with the world. Excellent!
Rating: Summary: A sleeper hit. Review: For me, reading Lord of Scoundrels was like finding that small summer movie that turns out to be truly excellent and not at all what I expected. The book has a clincher cover (the couple is embracing), is set in France and England in the 1800's, and has a tortured hero. This usually means the storyline will be dark, and that there will probably be some bad treatment on the part of the hero. Oftentimes this can be definite downer material. Alas, Lord of Scoundrels is *not at all* what I expected! First, it's funny. And I don't mean, "hey, that was humorous" funny. I mean laugh out loud at least 5 times funny (plus times when you just smile at the characters' antics). The characters are also of a breed that is very hard to find in romance. The hero is not a jerk at all. He has a tortured past, and he isn't very nice sometimes, but he's never violent towards the heroine and in this way endeared himself to me. He has just the right amount of inner conflict to make things interesting, but he doesn't turn you off with his obsessions. Plus his name is Sebastian (sigh). And the heroine is wonderful! She has that spark that makes you want her to be in every scene in the book. She's competent (she can shoot a gun better than her male cousins), smart (her brother is the idiot in the family), independent (she's about to open her own shop), and sexual (she is knowledgeable about sex and even seduces the hero!). The dynamic between a heroine that knows what she's doing and a tortured hero who's not a jerk is what makes this book so great, mostly because it's so rare in romance novels. If you're tired of the same old same old in romance, check this one out. You will not be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: An Adorable Book Review: This book is precisely why some of us keep reading romance novels even though there are probably only 10 readable authors in the entire genre. Ms. Chase has talent and wit, and I'm sorry I just discovered her. I would like to read all her books, but am unwilling to spend ( )for a paperback on the secondary market. Are there any plans to reprint her older novels? Seems to me it would be a smart move by both the publisher and the author. Excellent, Ms. Chase. Thank you.
Rating: Summary: Funniest, sexiest, and most emotional book I've read... Review: I love romance books, but originality is scarce. In a genre where too many books seem to blend together until I can hardly tell them apart, LORD OF SCOUNDRELS is a true original. I haven't read anything like it. Dain and Jessica are a very unique, loveable, frustrating, sexy couple. But there is so much more to it than that and I fear I don't have the words. Only this: DO NOT MISS THIS BOOK! Reading it was a true pleasure. Jessica calls Dain Lord Beelzebub. I loved that she wasn't clueless or skittish around Dain. Dain has been used to most people, especially women, looking at him as though he is a freak. He's big, brutish, and a bully. He's also a "whoremonger" who has sworn never to get involved with a lady. But Jessica gets under his skin upon their first meeting. She accepts the fact that for the first time in her life, she has fallen in MAJOR lust with a man. This is where the fun begins. The prose is fluid, lyrical, and smooth. It NEVER falters. The dialogue is the most original and witty dialogue I've read in a very long time. Don't miss it!
Rating: Summary: Lord of Scoundrels Review: While I like all of Loretta Chase's books (The Lion's Daughter, Captives of the Night, and The Last Hellion), which feature many of the characters that are mentioned or appeared in Lord of Scoundrels, Lord of Scoundrels remains my favorite of hers and my favorite romance. Its wit and humor are sustained from beginning to end. Dain and Jessica remain my favorite beauty and the beast characters (followed closely though by Amanda Quick's Gideon and Harriet in Ravished). Chase has managed to create a tough but tender, mature and wise leading lady and a tortured, obstinate, and unruly leading man who hides his wounded 8 year old's psyche behind the facade of an unrepentant bounder. Watching the two of them work through his angst is both tremendously entertaining and surprisingly touching without becoming sentimental or maudlin. Jessica knows how to handle her beast without letting him tear her apart. I've read the book through three time already and look forward to reading it again and again over the years.
Rating: Summary: THE MOST HILARIOUS NOVEL I'VE EVER READ IN A LOOONG TIME ! Review: Can't remember the last time I broke into constant giggles reading a romance novel. I had such a FANTASTIC time that I re-read it again & again & again... Hard to believe I've never read anything by Chase before this. Dain is certainly the most self-loathing hero I've ever come across in quite a while. It's so pitiful he can't believe it even when it hit him right between his crossed eyes that Jessica is in love & lust with him. Jessica is by far the brightest, toughest, lustiest heroine ever penned. Ms Chase is a genius author to be able to write such a witty love-story & enthralling characters. The part where Jess shot him calmly as if she's merely handing him a candy is truly a classic. Not a dull moment I had devouring every page. The awfully painful childhood Dain had - born with a giant nose & scrawny body - made him a cynical man who questioned the existence of the Lord above. He learned to protect himself by laughing at his foes & everything else. He even referred to his by-blow as 'it' 'cuz the boy is the exact image of himself when he was 8 years old. Intriguing hero & heroine, funny & heated sparring, toes-warming love-scenes & a lovely ending. No words can do justice to the exhilaration U'll feel reading this brilliant book. Thank U Ms Chase for presenting this sparkling jewel to us all !
