Summary: Pretty Bad
Review: This was the first book I've read by Ms. McNaught, and was extremely disappointed, as she is such a popular author. Although not horrible, this book had unconvinving characters and a predictable plot.

Lauren needs money, so when her father sets up a job appointment with a distant relative whom she despises, so goes to it. To her suprise, this relative offers her a job, but not just any job. He wants her to work for his rival business and see if she can identify a leak that is going into the rival buisness. Lauren attempts to fail tests to get the job at the rival business, because she is reluctant to spy, but she meets the business' president, Nick, who likes her and secures her a job.

Nick seduces Lauren and then leaves her, but finds that he wants to have an affair with his new employee, even though Lauren resists his onslaught left and right. She even enlists the aid of her boss Jim to help get Nick off her back. Then, of course, they eventully get together, but what will happen when Nick learns the truth about why Lauren is working for him?

The characters were so unbelieveable. First, a shy Lauren asks Nick out after she barely met him, a thing she would really never have done as he was older and obviously much more experienced. She wouldn't have wanted to start with a man like that. Second error, was that she let him seduce her, which I believe, but then when he leaves is naive enough to think he will come back. For all that Lauren tried to convince Nick, and the reader that she was not a child, she kind of behaved like one.

Then there's Nick. A man of his experience would have been able to tell Lauren's level of experience right off, because the way it was written, Lauren practically had VIRGIN written on her head in bold letters. Then he is always telling Lauren how naive she is (which I agree with) and telling her to grow up, when he was the one who needed to grow up. He would tease her about her moral code and ideals when she was acting more mature than he. He somehow thought that his sexual experience made him so grown up, even when he had temper tantrums reminiscant of a teenager. He was a totally dislikeable and unbelievable character. The whole time I found myself thinking that Lauren should have stuck to her ideals and could have done better.

However, I know that some people might like this book, and I have personal reasons why i don't, among which is that I am exactly like Lauren (except for being stunningly beautiful) and this romance is not how I would envision mine to be, and consequently not what I wanted for Lauren either. If I can't wish that I was in the heroine's place, I really don't consider the book to have been great, and that is why I don't like this book.

Summary: Disappointing
Review: I am a big Judith McNaught fan, but I was disappointed in this one. After reading it, all I felt was let down. I didn't buy into the development of the characters' relationship.

Don't let this discourage you into buying Judith McNaught, though. Some of her other novels are amazing!

Rating: 1 stars
Summary: Buy any other McNaught book but this one!
Review: Very disappointing. I have read over 10 Judith McNaught books and this was by far the worst. No character development and poor writing. Whether you liked the characters or not is not important, because in this book you never get more than a glossed over impression of their personalities. I really love Judith McNaught, but buy a different book, not this one!

Summary: Double Standards for double days
Review: This book was my first time read of work by McNaught and was first printed in 1986 which leaves me to believe it may have been one of her first publications. I read the book in two days, starting late one evening and finishing it early the next morning. I gave the book a high score because I love a book that makes me want to keep turning the pages to see what happens. I thought the plot was good. I understood how Nick could acquire his attitude toward women because of his mother, but I kept wondering how long it would take Lauren to get to him. McNaught took time to develop her characters and made you see them as I think she did and wanted you to. I enjoy a good romance and McNaught delivered one in Double Standards. I'll be ready to read another one of her books the next time I get a chance.

Summary: THIS BOOK IS A MUST-HAVE FOR ROMANCE FANS!!!!!!!!!!!!
Review: The first book I ever read by Judith McNaught was Perfect, and it was just that, but this book is even better! I'd suggest this book to anyone. If you have never read one of McNaught's novels, this is a great on to begin with. If you have read McNaught before, you'll love her work even more after reading this book!

Summary: Second only to 'Perfect'
Review: I really enjoyed this book. The chemistry between Nick and Lauren... I could understand Nick not trusting anyone with heart as his very own mother hurt him. Lauren who never wanted to hurt anyone was treated poorly by Nick at times as her employer but I thought it fun knowing he was doing that because he didn't know how to deal with his feelings for her. It was a great read and I really recommend it to anyone. If you haven't read Paradise and Perfect, you're missing out. If you like historical romances, try all of Ms. McNaughts. I've yet to find an author that can set my emotions on a rollercoaster like she does. One minute you're laughing and then come the tears. Luckily all of JM's books end in smiles.

Summary: Very poor Judith McNaught
Review: Judith McNaught is my favourite romance author. Her books are generally witty, hilarious at points and always have good character development and a story line. Unfortunately Double Standards does not live up to that. If I wanted to read Mills and Boon I would buy that. Where do you hear that the heroine falls into bed with the hero within 2 days of meeting him. Then by the time to book carries on with the story it is half finished. I could not identify with either the hero or heroine in the novel and very little character development took place.

I enjoyed all Ms McNaughts historical romances and Perfect and Paradise. I would give the historical romances a 5 out of 5 rating and Perfect and Paradise a 4.5 out of 5 rating. All to be recommended, but I will not buy any more of her books in the near future. I will have to wait until they get to my local library - then I won't feel like I have wasted my money when I don't bother to finish the book.

Summary: Outdated but a goody anyway
Review: This book was first published in 1984 and shows its age, but if you can read it as a period piece, it's a lot of fun. Nick, the hero, is a working-class kid from a grim background, grown up to be a driven, overachieving, and emotionally frozen CEO. He hires and desires Lauren, a nice girl with a secret. The emotional and physical jousting between the two of them sometimes grates on 90s sensibilities -- nowadays Nick's conduct in places is grounds for a lawsuit -- but in its own context it plays well. Nick is very attractive and Lauren is far from stupid. Yes, the ending is weak -- Nick needs to change and there's no sign he has. But this is a fantasy, not real life, and a nice one. They all lived happily ever after.

Review: I especially liked the setting (in a city I'm very familiar with). Very good story!

Summary: A GOOD BOOK
Review: I read all of this author's books time and again, and I will read this one over someday as well. She always has something new to add to her stories, and her work is to be highly praised. If you want to read another book that goes straight to your heart, read Stolen Moments by Barbara Jeanne Fisher. . .It is a beautiful story of unrequited love. . .for certain the love story of the nineties. I intended to give the book a quick read, but I got so caught up in the story that I couldn't put the book down. From the very beginning, I was fully caught up in the heart-wrenching account of Julie Hunter's battle with lupus and her growing love for Don Lipton. This love, in the face of Julie's impending death, makes for a story that covers the range of human emotions. The touches of humor are great, too, they add some nice contrast and lighten things a bit when emotions are running high. I've never read a book more deserving of being published. It has rare depth. Julie's story will remind your readers that life and love are precious and not to be taken for granted. It has had an impact on me, and for that I'm grateful. Stolen Moments is written with so much sensitivity that it made me want to cry. It is a spellbinder. What terrific writing. Barbara does have an exceptional gift!
