Rating: Summary: Yum! Review: I'll never think of SPAM the same way again. It used to be just a creepy mystery-meat product. Now, whenever I pass it at the store, I think of it as "cannibal food" and get the giggles. This is all due to Mr. Moore and his memorable book. The characters are marvelously off-kilter and quirky: The pilot in Career Purgatory, the cross-dressing escaped call "girl" with a pet bat, the exiled cannibal who thinks the rest of the tribe should still follow the old ways, and even the duplicitous Love Nun herself. The plot races along and the reader follows, even though he may be temporarily distracted by his own laughter. This is a very entertaining book!
Rating: Summary: Moore's Least Review: This was my least favorite of the Christopher Moore novels. In keeping with his "Tom Robbins meets the X-Files" style, this novel is centered on an organ-harvesting scheme in the South Pacific. However, I found that it lacked the sense of slack fun the permeated his other novels. Rather than chuckling to myself, page by page, I was merely smirking.I would recommend any Christopher Moore novel, but if there is another one you haven't read yet, go to it first.
Rating: Summary: Like a Tom Robbins novel. Except... Review: lacking the wit of a Robbins novel. Lacking the charm, the clever writing, the magic, the spirituality, the sex (there was some, but it was quite machinelike), the true quirkiness. The story was, indeed, Robbinsesque. That's where the similarity ends. Sorry Mr. Moore. Good try, but you just didn't put it over.
Rating: Summary: Very Entertaining Review: I have read all of Christopher Moore's works. This guy is nuts. What better quality for an author. Can't wait for the release of "Lamb", I have read the first chapter on his web page and it sounds like it will be as entertaining as the rest of his works. I strongly reccommend reading anything Mr. Moore puts out. Enjoy
Rating: Summary: Can't take it seriously, and that's a good thing... Review: You can't really take this novel seriously, what with cannibals, cargo cults, an organ-harvesting conspiracy, a talking fruit bat and the theft of a 747 from the Hawaii airport. But it is a funny and entertaining light adventure fantasy, set in the South Pacific with a band of memorable characters and a plot that concerns, among many other things, the establishment of a new religion worshipping a WWII fighter pilot named Vincent. A fun read for your next island vacation.
Rating: Summary: An amusing diversion from reality Review: Honestly, I bought this book on the strength of it's title...yes yes, I know, don't judge a book by it's cover...but I did. I thought from the reviews that it would be more than a detective/unwitting hero story. It was an interesting concept, a religion based on a WWII pilot, but I found myself disinterested in the main character and even less interested in the plot when it started to unravel into several stories. If you need an afternoon to shut the brain off and take a little ride to an exotic locale (Moore describes the island and it's people so well you want to hitch a canoe ride over for a little vacation) then this is the book for you.
Rating: Summary: Moore's Best Review: Planes, goddesses, ninjas, transvestite hookers, and the mishaps of Tucker Case--Fantastic. Hilarious.
Rating: Summary: Dull Review: I live in Micronesia and this book is very accurate on details but that's the only nice thing I can say. It was obvious that the author was writting in the vein of Tom Robbins but he just couldn't pull it off. I kept waiting to get into the heart of the book but by the last page it was obvious that there was none.
Rating: Summary: Simply Incredible Review: I really enjoyed this novel, it offers everything, a down on his luck pilot, a great cast of characters and beyond all this novel is just down right hilarious. I've read all of Mr. Moore's novels and his work just keeps getting better. I purchased "Practical Demonkeeping" on a whim by an author I hadn't ever read before and found I couldn't put it down. I went out and picked up all of his other novels. Mr. Moore's style of writing is unique and is in a class of its own. I love his guy! Each of his novels will hold your attention from beginning to end. He is so very creative, imaginative and so very funny. Mr. Moore is definitely a keeper, so I'll be waiting & watching for anything that he may publish. I may have been a little late finding out about this author but I'm definitely not sorry. For those of you who haven't read Mr. Moore's work, check it out cause you're missing something exciting and out of the ordinary. Keep up the good work Mr. Moore!
Rating: Summary: Not like other Moore Novels - BETTER Review: I found this story to be more capturing then any of the other Moore novels that I have read. The main character is a pilot named Tuck Case who is your run of the mill looser. He gets put into one crazy situation (which I am not going to tell you about) and he rises to the occasion in more than one manner. Not only is Tuck a great character, but there are TONS of wonderful people to read about. Kimi (a transvestite hooker) and his/her bat, the Shark people, the Sky Priestess a Sorcerer and Ninjas. These characters are well rounded and more three dimensional then most people I know. Moore's best novel to date!
