Rating: Summary: I am pleased that I bought this book. Review: This is a beautiful yet practical book. The exercises are very accessible and the photographs are inspirational. This book blows away the myth that ballet is bad for you. The exercises are simple, safe and effective. The New York City Ballet Workout has found a permanent home in my dance bag, it's a perfect warm-up for dancers of any age.
Rating: Summary: I think this is a great book for anyone wanting to tone up Review: This book is a great tool for anyone who wants to tone up their body. Although you won't learn anything about ballet, you can be as lean and limber as the dancers in the book. The step-by-step instructions are simple enough for anyone to understand, and the pictures of the dancers doing the moves of the exercise help you make sure your doing the moves correctly. This book is a great start to getting in shape.
Rating: Summary: The exercises are user-friendly, the photos magnificent! Review: Coming back from multiple knee surgeries, I was able to modify my physical therapy regimen using the exercises and the detailed guidance that I found in this book. An ex-dancer, I found immediate gratification and motivation in performing exercises that felt rhythmic and fluid (and that were immediately accessible!).
Rating: Summary: Great Workout for Dancers and Non-dancers! Review: This book is great for absolutely anyone! I especially liked the exercises for the "computer posture." I feel like anyone could just pick up this book, and do the exercises in it. Even dancers will find the stretches and exercises beneficial. Thanks Peter Martins for this wonderful book!
Rating: Summary: I love this book. Review: As a middle-age woman taking her first dance lessons, I found this book and its photos of dancers' bodies to be very inspirational. The stretches are challenging but doable, and the introductory text on the ballet company itself is interesting.
Rating: Summary: The photos are inspiring, and the exercises are effective. Review: I love this book! The exercises seem so simple, but when you do them, you use muscles differently than you do in other exercise programs. The result is that you can really feel it the next day, even though you didn't work up a sweat. I don't think this book would be a good program for losing weight - you don't sweat much or really get your heart rate going - but it is excellent for toning, particularly the butt. I reccommend it to anyone looking for a new, different toning routine.
Rating: Summary: My body loves this book! Review: Beautiful stark black and white photographs grace the pages of this remarkable book, showing correct form for the exercises and offering a glimpse into the lifestyle of a dancer. The text is written in such a way that even the most ballet-illiterate reader would soon recognise the terms "first position," "plie," and "tendu." Peter Martins is an exceptionally competant man who deserves great credit for this work of visual and intellectual art
Rating: Summary: The New York City Ballet Workout by Peter Martins``````````` Review: The New York City Ballet Workout by Peter Martins is an excellent book for dancers and non dancers alike who want to achieve the look, flexibility, and grace of a ballet dancer. It is has lots of pictures of The New York City Ballet's dancers and each exercise is followed by complete pictures of dancers demonstrating each exercise. It is easy to understand and the stretches featured feel really good. The pictures have an art-like quality to them. I almost wanted to frame some of the pictures. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves dancer's bodies and wants to get in top condition
Rating: Summary: Best Way to Exercise for ANYONE with great results! Review: I have danced for 10+ years, and only took ballet for 6 months. This book definitely proves that ballet is indeed one of the most intense sports one can participate in. The exercises in the book are definitely written so anyone with no prior dance training can understand and execute them, but for dancers who are no longer taking classes, this is a must-have! Even with my current knee injury, I am able to keep in shape with this book. After a week of doing a pilates video, I switched over to the New York City Ballet Workout and noticed a change in my body the day after I began the book. The most important part of ballet, as is emphasized in the book, is controlling your muscles and being 100% aware of them. Ballet helps with posture, grace, and muscle strength, but only if one is consciously making the effort to change. That is the only forewarning. Don't expect everything to change automatically. You have to make the effort to be more aware of your body when you are out and about. This book definitely helps one to do just that. BUY IT!!!!
Rating: Summary: excellent.. Review: very good book.. great pictures.. fun excercises that are alot harder than they look.. easy to follow along.. however, if you're looking for something to get your heart rate up, this doesn't always work.. i usually combine it with practicing dance and do this as a warm up and cool down.. very relaxing.. definately makes you feel elongiated (is that a word?).. i enjoyed it alot..
