Rating: Summary: Thunder Review: I really enjoy how the author writes the book from a black girl's point of view. I think this gives you a better idea of what was happening on the other side of the story. I like how she shows real conflicts between blacks and whites.
Rating: Summary: What A Great Book Review: Roll Of Thunder, Hear My Cry is one of the best books that I have ever read. It is up there with the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Mildred D. Taylor is at her best in this book. It gives a great perspective of the brutality and racism in the heart of the South in the 1930's.This book, unlike others , is not slow and boring in the beginning pages. It jumps right in on the dramatic brutality towards the blacks. It is 100% believable and very interesting.
Rating: Summary: Roll of Thunder Hear My Review: Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry is an excellent book. It has a lot of different characters and they all have a different attitudes. For example, Cassie who is a nine year old girl, is very brave and will stand up for her family, while Little Man is a neat freak. I really enjoyed reading this book because you never know whats going to happen next. First, someones getting lit on fire, and then Papa's getting shot in the head. This book, for the most part, never has a dull point, something is always going on. Another good thing about this book is that it shows real life situations of African Americans and the horrible cruelty they were treated with. At this point in time most whites were racist against blacks and had no feelings toward them. I can't even believe that some of that stuff still happens today. I personally think that Mildred D. Taylor did a very good job in the making of this book and I'm glad it got a Newberry Medal.
Rating: Summary: Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry Review: Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry is a great book. It has lots of facts about when African Americans were not treated as equals. Also about how bad the whites treated them. It is almost as good as the Lord of the Rings trilogy and Harry Potter. There is also a lot of action and excitement. This book never becomes dull and is a roller coaster ride the whole way. READ THIS BOOK!
Rating: Summary: Valuable lessons for people of all races Review: Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry was one of my favorites as a child, and I still love it today. I think every child should read books like this to learn what it's like for others to endure racism. Then maybe they would think twice about making racist remarks. Growing up white in the South, I know this book helped me stand out from some of my friends and even family members who use the "n" word and in general believe the stereotypes. I plan to teach my future children about tolerance and love for all people, and this book is a tool I recommend for parents wishing to do the same.
Rating: Summary: Young, Gifted and Black -- Harsh Realities in 1930's South Review: Living through The Great Depression was hard enough -- for African Americans it was even harder! This book tells of life in the rural South through the eyes of a 9-year old African American girl. She gives an account of what each day was like, how black people were exploited and cheated, even beaten and murdered. There were many good people, black and white, who just wanted everyone to get along, and when it really mattered they all banded together. This book is for mature readers who can handle reading about difficult situations. I would highly recommend this book to any readers above the age of 10. As a teacher I have used this book in my classroom during African American History Month, but would not hesitate to introduce it any time. A true gem of a book!*****
Rating: Summary: You will love it !!!!!!!! Review: I will give this book a 5 because the text is just great. When my teacher said he was going to read " ROLL OF THUNDER HEAR MY CRY I thought it was going to be a book I would just want to read for 5 seconds and just put it down. But as he was reading it I like sucked in more info. on how blacks were treated. I loved this book. For all the kids that don't like to read oyu have better pick up a copy in a book store.
Rating: Summary: Roll of Thunder review Review: Roll of Thunder is about the experiences of the Logan family trying to survive in the south. The book is told from the perspective of a young girl named Cassie. It shows how she and her brothers run into problems and how their family has troubles. The Logan family is a black family that owns their land, and constantly Mr. Granger, who is a very racist person, tries to take it from them. The Logan's are an honorable family that people look up to for strength and courage. Even when they faced obstacles in front of them, they found a way to overcome them peacefully. I can relate to two people in this novel; Cassie and Poppa. I faced racism when I was in high school, and I felt the same way Cassie did. I felt like it was unjust and unfair. I also can relate to Poppa and the way he wants to act out like uncle Hammer, but he has to use logical thinking. This is how I had to think, so that I wouldn't get in trouble at school. I really like this book. The characters different attitudes and emotions kept me interested. My favorite part is when Cassie fought Lillian Jean. I like this part because Cassie out smarts Lillian Jean. Cassie gets her apologies and everything she wanted. Cassie patiently thought of a way she could get Lillian Jean back without getting in trouble. Cassie proved to be smarter, because Lillian Jean never saw it coming. If you are a person who likes seeing people overcome obstacles; you will like this book. It is a good book. I would recommend people to read it. It shows how people were treated, and how it was growing up in a place full of racism and hate. This book shows survival by doing what is necessary.
Rating: Summary: Great Story of Family Union Review: Racism. A huge problem during the '30s. This novel is about how a family comes together with people of their own kind to overcome this obstacle. Poverty, abuse, and tears are just a few of what the Logan family has to go through. It tells of a family's struggles and how they overcome them with the help of friends and other relatives.
